Writers should be aware that there is a dedicated site in TripAdvisor to write about the beautiful Rosary Chapel (Capilla del Rosario), but of course, it is difficult to dissociate both. Santo Domingo is the mother church with is huge atrium (this month with sculptures by Jorge Marin). The church itself is huge, a bit too somber for my taste, with interesting altars and sculptures. Look for the curious announcement at the entrance, saying that it is forbidden to enter the church with food, hay, dogs (nothing said about other animals), cellular phone and... chewing gum.

There are few churches in the world that can compare to the sheer impact of the rosario inside. A true masterpiece of Mexican baroque! (Yes, I have been to the Vatican- Michelangelo's work of course transcends all)

Without doubt this church is a must-see; unfortunately someone stole our phone while we were praying inside Capilla del Rosario. We followed the suspect but there was nothing we could do because there weren't any police officers around. Finally we located the device with an app but we were advised not to try and retrieve it; the hotel concierge let us know that there was a lot of petty theft in Centro Histórico.

I have been in a lot of Churches in Europe, so much that it's like if you seen once church you have seen them all. Not true. The amount of gold leaf detail puts Santo Domingo pretty high on the list.
