We stayed here one night on our way from Mexico City to Oaxaca. We made our reservation and prepaid through BestDay.com. , and received an email confirmation with a printable voucher for our stay, and we had no trouble presenting this at the desk for check in. The hotel is older and a bit careworn, but the common areas and our room were very clean. The room, which was off the courtyard at the back of the hotel, was very large and had two full beds. Without street noise, it was fairly quiet, though the walls were thin and we did here some people arriving in the middle of the night. The hotel does not provide bottled water, but a sign in the room said that they have an in house water purification system. I still did not drink the tap water, just in case! One drawback was that there was no safe in the room. The hotel provides compimentary evening snacks (tostadas) and an ample continental breakfast (granola, yogurt, fruit, juice, coffee, toast.) The breakfast room was not large enough and we had to wait for a place to sit due to a large group at breakfast time. There is also free Internet. A lot of extras for the price, and convenient to the zocalo.

This hotel is a great value for Puebla. It is close to everything and features clean and basic rooms at a reasonable cost. It features free breakfast, which was basic but good. For people who travel for the destination and not the hotel, this is the place for you.

We stayed at the Hotel Imperial for 3 night. It is definitely a budget hotel. The location is good as it is only a few blocks from the zocalo. A continental breakfast is included each morning which consists of fruit, yogurt, cereal, toast/bread, and juice. We stayed here to keep within our budget. our room was clean but in dire need of carpet renovation. Overall, the hotel sufficed for our needs as we were out and about most of the day. Front desk staff was not very attentive.

We stayed just here just one night when the Colonial (our favorite) was full. We thought it was fine and a good value for low price. It's older with rooms surrounding a central courtyard, but lacks the charm of the Colonial. Furnishings are blah and worn. Beds fine. Think we were on second or third floor. Shower was good! Breakfast (included) was nice with fruit and few other things. Staff didn't make much of an impression on us one way or other. They got the job done. We'd stay here again. Free internet is always great to have.

We stayed here for a few days in mid Jan, 2010. We had room #125 which had a living room area with a coffee maker, fridge , couch, loveseat and chair and table with 3 chairs, The adjacent bedroom had a fan, 2 double beds, 1 single bed and a TV. The ceilings were about 15' high, there were lots of windows and some opened. Even though we were on the street I did not feel the need to use my ear plugs. The hotel has a little mini golf course that my kids liked, a very small weight room, a free washing machine (use your own laundry soap) and a dryer that didn't work so I had to use the clothes line. The room rate included a simple breakfast, yogurt, fruit, coffee, juice, cereal, granola and milk, and toast and a free snack and drink (beer, or juice at night). There was also wifi in the rooms and free internet computer in the lobby. The room can feel cold as it was when we were there but the sun shining in during the day helped. We also requested extra blankets which they gave us no problem. Many of the rooms we were shown were huge but we wanted one with lots of natural light. We emailed them ahead of time for a rate and they gave us the room for $440 pesos a night. Would stay here again.

We have been there in November. And as other people said before, we got a discount by showing the Lonely Planet. And it was freezing cold at night. We slept under two blankets and were still freezing.

We prefered and got a room in the newer part in the back yard. The room was dark and a little bit smelly because of smoking. The bathroom was ok clean, but could be better.

Everything is a little bit shabby. The noise is ok.
Breakfast is ok, but it's ok to skip it and look for a cafe.

The staff was really nice and took care. We could leave our backpacks in a locked room for the day, when we left.

So if you want just a place to sleep in the center of the town and don't want to pay a fortune, go for it.

I have stayed at the Hotel Imperial five times now, once in 2006 for ten days, and twice each for a couple of days in 2007 and 2008, on my way to and from Oaxaca. I am 67 and travel by myself, but have never had any security concerns there. The staff has always been friendly and helpful about taking messages and helping me find transportation within the city or to to small towns outside of the city. The elevator is a great blessing after I've spent the whole day walking around town or visiting markets in outlying villages. The tap water is filtered, and it's a boon to be able to drink it without worrying. (I've never been sick in Puebla, so their water filter must be working well.) The rooms on the third floor in the main section, where I've always stayed, are spacious and are always very clean, though some might find the decor a bit fifties-like: wrought-iron light fixtures and geometric-print bedspreads. The rooms I have had came with a walk-in closet, and sizeable, clean bathrooms with shower. The discount given when one shows a guidebook that has a review of the hotel is also very useful for freeing up more of one's travel funds for food and cruising the markets.
The only drawbacks I can think of are that the hot water apparently goes off from about 7 PM to 7 AM, and that when youth groups are staying there, the central atrium transmits the noise in the lobby to all floors. I like this hotel well enough that I don't see any reason to stay anywhere else in Puebla.
