“Central with a great view.”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

Zacatecas is a beautiful city built on hills in the high areas of Mexico.

This hostel is a high building, in a high city with a high roof with high views.

I stayed in January when the road in front of the hostel was being replaced together with pipes, so it should soon, have a nice new road. The hostel is very well presented with water filters (providing free drinking water) in the two kitchens and set on many floors to tone your buttocks. Showers have boiling hot water, but taps seem limited to cold water.

I stayed in a room on the top floor which had an amazing view, although it was a little cold in January but warm enough in bed (the hostel - as most buildings in the area - has no heating as most of the year its warm). The rooms are dated and my sheets required replacing as they had holes in them, towels could have been cleaner too - but don't let this detract from the cheap place with amazing views.

Overall I had an excellent, central, stay in this hostel and would recommend it, I would only recommend bringing a sleeping bag, especially if you are staying in the winter months and a towel.

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to cold, avoid high rooms in the winter!

The best hostal in Mexico I have stayed in! They staff are second to none very friendly, professional and helpful. The hostal has many nice rooms and a terrace looking out over the city. It is centrally located in a very safe area near Shops, Restaurants and the Mercado. The hostal has a sophisticated security system and cameras all over. Very safe for females or lone travellers. There is Wifi access throughout the building and computers available in the Reception. It is very traditionally Mexican. I came for 2 days and stayed for a week! Thanks Luis, Antonio and staff! Zacatecas is beautiful and very friendly place and is a must visit if you are travelling in Mexico! Suerte :-)

Unexpected fun at this clean and friendly hostel. Great location close to walking everywhere in Zacatecas. Beautiful terrace. I stayed in a single room on a top floor and it was simple, clean, quiet, just what I needed. Didn't come with an expectation to meet people but had some really interesting conversations and meals with people from all over the globe. (As well as plenty of time to do my own thing.) The place has many Mexican features in terms of style; unique and wonderful. Staff super friendly and sets the tone. I'd been to Zacatecas before and stayed in hotels, but when I return I'll definitely book a room at Hostal Villa Colonial again!

Zacatecas is a great place to visit. A nice very friendly town with a feeling of being somewhat off of the regular tourist path.

I booked through Hostelbookers to stay 3 nights at Hostal Villa Colonial in a private room with ensuite bathroom. My reservation was misplaced or something and I had to wait an hour+ for the owner to show up to sort things out. I don't know if Felipe was being extra nice to me at this point, but he gave me a basic street level bachelor suite style apartment right across the alleyway from the hostel. It was a great place and I encourage anyone who may want a little extra privacy to see about reserving this little apartment.

There is no view and it is simly furnished but you can keep the front door open and say "hi" to the people walking by. I really enjoyed it.

The hostel is right behind the cathedral and it is a great location. It was nice to stay in the little apartment.

One thing that was fun to do, although very strenuous, was to walk up the rock-pathway to the top of La Bufa and then take the cable car back down into town. Along the way up you can pick prickly pear fruits from the cactus and spend another hour taking the needles out.

Next to the cable car was the conveniently located Silver Mine tour which was about an hour and extremenly interesting if you want to get a glimpse of the extraordinary effort it must of been to extract the silver which made this town.

Also you may want to look for an EXCELLENT 100 peso seafood restaurant located at the far end of the Plaza Genaro Codina - Boca del Ria. Looks like any other middle class mexican restaurant, but the food was far superior and served very elegantly. My favorite restaurant memory from this two week adventure.

Room Tip: You may want to try and rent the little apartment across the alley. It was nice to stay somewhere a...

We have been to many hostels and this is by far one of the best we have ever stayed at! Not only is the staff VERY friendly but the rooms / bathrooms are very clean as well. They have a wonderful balcony with kitchen included and bbq pit with a great view of Zacatecas. The location is perfect and is within walking distance of everything important. The streets are safe at all times of the day and you can't beat the price!

We would recommend to all who visit!

Room Tip: make sure to ask for one on the top floor. But you may get winded by the altitude .

We stayed here recently for 5 nights over Semana Santa, and luckily enough it coincided with the music Festival Cultura. The hostel is well situated, literally 2mins walk to the main street Hidalgo containing all the major shops, restaurants and handicrafts stalls etc. There was a bit of confusion about our reservation for a private room when we arrived (make sure you ring them if you are arriving late as they did not have access to their email at the time), which resulted in us having to sleep in a dorm the first night. However, they did apologise for the confusion and upgraded us to a nicer room with a kitchenette which proved quite useful. The dorm we were in the first night wasn't great, quite small but did have lockers. The shared bathrooms for the dorms both needed a good clean. On the other hand, the room we were upgraded to in the annex building (across the street, which contains the private rooms) was immaculate with a new bathroom and really good shower, and the TV with cable was an added bonus. The staff were all really nice and helpful, and we were offered to have the room cleaned every day. Most of the private rooms seem to have small balconies and there are beautiful roof terraces overlooking the city in both buildings.

Lastly, the WIFI signal was great in both buildings and computers are available in the hostel, as is a kitchen and really good book exchange.

Some tips on where to eat:
Garufa - great steaks, big portions but probaly one of the priciest restaurants in town.
La Traviatta - Good thin crust pizza & cheap beer
Mykonos - new Mediterranean restaurant opposite Lavaderia El Indio Triste - really good gazpacho and hummus. Really cheap wine and beer.

Room Tip: Go for a private room in the annex.

What can I say that hasn't already been said?

From my experience the staff was helpful and very friendly. Some of which spoke amazing English. The people staying there were also very friendly and interesting. The location? Top notch. Walking distance to most amazing things in the town, the centro for sure. Security is great with cameras and somebody at the front door all night. My motorcycle remained untouched for 5 days on the street.

I'm traveling on my motorcycle with a tight budget an for 90 pesos the place was hard to beat with its amazing views and location. The showers could have been a bit cleaner, but after all we are in Mexico and by its standards they were clean.

When I'm not camping I approach every place with an open mind and this one surely didn't let me down.

I high recommend it. Thursday night they have a party and it's a good time to meet friendly Mexicans and travelers alike.
