One of the most interesting museums that we have been to. A bonus is that it is in a former convent with lovely gardens. Just about 5 blocks from the central plaza. It features masks, mostly from Mexico. The signage is only in Spanish, but you can still enjoy it without being able to read the explanations. No tour guides, just wander through.

One boy ( about 5 years old) visitor was quite scared by the ferocity of some of the masks and cried for a good deal of his stay there.

They also have a room of puppets. Also a few Diego Rivera drawings on display.

I did not see an elevator in parts and there were several sets of stairs, so I would check about wheelchair access if you need it.

Closed Wednesdays.

The building is one of the most gorgeous of all colonial Mexico. The museum contains hundreds of masks along with explanations of the role of masks in pre-hispanic and colonial Mexico. Everything is in Spanish -- probably English guides are available if arranged. I spent almost three hours there. Great place for photos and to learn a lot about Mexico.

It is a great restoration of a decaying historic convent into a place for visitors to stroll through gardens and also discover the art. Art of Rafael Coronel and the vast collection masks from vast Indian and States Of Mexico and the vintage collection of puppets are like a window into the culture and spirit of Mexico. I highly recommend a visit !

We were drawn to this museum by the promise of a great collection of masks. We were not disappointed. The collection is vivid and varied, with explanations (in Spanish) of the different types of masks. We particularly liked the room dedicated to the devil. The collection is complimented by a much smaller collection of pottery and puppets, and some tasteful modern artwork in another section of the museum.

The most wonderful thing about the museum for me though, was the surprise we received when we arrived to find it was set in a beautiful ex-convent. The colourful gardens among the old ruins were wonderful to behold, and we would have loved to picnic here.
