One of the main attractions but somehow it's not as well looked after as it should... A lot of small stores around it and can't miss the mercado.

Thank Chris R

Pay particular attention to the facade…it is really spectacular. Across the street from the Cathederal is a write up (even in English!). The courtyard beside is also beautiful.

I've been to many colonial cathedrals in Mexico, and I'm pretty sure I can say, without hesitate, that this one is my favorite, at least on the outside. The Baroque facade is astonishing, and the special color of the building -pinkish, due to the pink stone- makes this cathedral very special and different to the others.

The Zacatecas Cathedral is known for its colonial style found only in Mexico (churrigueresco). However, they have recently done a new altar that blows your mind and steals your breath. In a centuries old colonial masterpiece you have a contemporary piece of art. On a massive gold leaf wall 17 meters tall and 11 wide, worked with prisms and wonderful volumes, you have a real life sized religious figures done by well known Mexican artist Javier Marin. What a treat! What images and making the old work with the new, something to go and see for sure!

We visited in Feb 2013 (the slow season) and one tower was shrouded in scaffolding, so we took pictures of the other tower. There are other beautiful churches in Zacatacas that make glorious pictures too. Something to remember ...... the Cathedral (and other churches) are active and so appropriate clothing is expected. If you are in shorts just step inside to take a peek, but go no further. If you are lucky there will be something happening in the plaza. We happened upon a Drum and Bugle competition for high school students.
