“For the price, a great place to stay… one of a kind!”
Reviewed November 24, 2013 for a stay in November 2013

My husband and I just spent two weeks in Morelia during the Dead of the Day celebrations at the accommodation of Nacho Cardona (Oct 29–Nov 12, 2013). At the end of the day, when we balanced our experiences at this place it came out very favourably!

We enjoyed what can be considered a full home, decorated in an eclectic style, with a living room, a dining room, two bedrooms, two spacious bathrooms (with enough cold and hot water and one with a large closet) and a full, working kitchen and an entrance patio, for what can be considered a very reasonable price!

Yes, there were some small inconveniences, but if you pay what you are paying, you know you are not going to have all of the features a five star hotel would give you. But for sure we got much more than what we were expecting! For instance, during the day and sometimes in the evening, you will hear the singing of the budgie birds and the doves that Nacho has in cages in the ‘small jungle’ in front of the entrance door. You could also hear the crickets singing a harmless song and hiding somewhere outside or inside the house. On the other hand, we had one evening when many small dogs of the house were also pretending to sing and at high hours of the night. A word with Nacho and the dogs were kept for the most part quiet for the rest of our stay.

Certainly the kitchen did not have all of the pots, dishes and utensils we had at home, but there was enough to make our meals, from scratch, using the stove and having enough dishes to store leftovers in the fridge. When you don’t have all the things you become creative… or go to the store and buy what some of the small things you may need; for the price we were paying we could not expect everything to be there for us and we thought we could spend in some small things and still be ahead on the rental deal.

From the location, it was easy to travel to downtown. One can walk or take the vans converted to public transit (collectivos) that passed a block away and passed often enough as to not have a long wait for them. After a few days of visiting downtown and having walked and visited numerous places during the Day of the Dead celebrations, we decided to stay quiet and spent a couple of days in our quarters. We walked outside and within a couple of blocks we were able to find anything that we needed to prepare our meals, from fresh veggies, to meat, chicken, tortillas, beer and other necessities of life. We cooked, rested, read and watched TV. After two days we were not feeling trapped the way we would have felt if we were in a hotel room. A block from there there was also a few good restaurants were we could sneek out to eat if we preferred not to cook. The apartment is open and specious, with various skylights throughout and with enough greenery to make you feel comfortable at home.

We only have a tablet to connect to the internet, but someone with a computer will be able to connect, although the signal was weak at times. The TV is of a good size and there are lots of channels. We also made use of the CD player, where my husband was also able to connect his tablet and hear the ‘tons’ of music he has stored in it.

Perhaps one area in which Nacho can improve his service to his clients is to have an easier and more reliable method of communication with him. From when we first reserved the place until the time we arrived, there were times when it was difficult to get hold of him. Trying to figure out how to call from Mexico city to the interior or from Canada to Mexico city to a cellular phone and not to a land-line was a real challenge…. and I am Mexican, so I can only imagine for a foreigner it would be more difficult.

Also, it will be good for people to know that the accommodation is INSIDE of a multi-house unit of perhaps 6 to 8 homes and mostly inhabited by members of the same family. When we arrived the entrance of the place with the address given was so different from what we saw in the web, we wondered where we were. When we found the accommodation (with its independent entrance) we felt more relieved and when Nacho explained that the unit was mostly of other family members that made us feel more secure in our environment. It would have helped to have a lock on the door to our unit. That ‘small’ inconvenience somehow it kept me creative as I felt I had to put a chair in the door knob to keep the door secure at night (or at least to allow us to hear if the door was being opened while we slept). Nothing happened, and perhaps we worried more than we needed to, but it would be a GREAT IMPROVEMENT to have a lock at the entrance. It would give the guest a greater peace of mind. It is also important to mention that the area outside the compound is dark at night. One will need to take a taxi if coming 'home' at night to be on the safer side of things.

Overall, the place was great for us and Nacho was a good host, helpful and friendly. At one point, he put us in touch with Gerardo Chavez, an official tourist guide for the province of Michoacán that for an incredible price drove us for nine hours for a visit to the towns of Pátzcuaro, Santa Clara de Cobre, Quiroga and for a panoramic drive to take pictures of Lake Pátzcuaro. Gerardo was very helpful, informative about the places we were visiting and patient while I did my shopping here and there. It was a wonderful day of exploration with what seemed to be a very old and good friend.

A great place to stay… one of a kind!

Thanks Nacho and thanks Gerardo… your attention and hospitality made for a great vacation in the wonderful city of Morelia!

“Great location, poor facility”
Reviewed July 25, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Although Nacho, our host, was very generous with his time and friends and the unit is in an excellent location, we wish to alert future renters to some of the concerns we had with this accommodation. First of all, this is not a “vacation home” as advertised on the website. It is a unit in a family complex; it could be busy and noisy. There was a concern for security. There was no lock on the front door and some of the windows could not be closed or secured. Solar hot water was available when the sun shone but at other times an outside, gas-fired tank had to be ignited. The kitchen was not well equipped. The kitchen tap had only a trickle of cold water and no hot water. The unit would benefit from a good cleaning and a “de-cluttering” of furniture. We did have to deal with cockroaches and mosquitoes on more than one occasion. We discussed these concerns with Nacho and if they are addressed this unit would would be a more comfortable place to stay.
