Amanpuri
Have stayed at the best Phuket hotels (Andara, Anantara, Paresa, Sri Panwa & etc) and came here with low expectations (after reading all the 1 & 2 rated reviews on tripadvisor) but was pleasantly surprised. As Amanpuri is by now almost 25 years old, was surprised that the rooms looked a bit dated (not likely to see it featured in Wallpaper magazine) but was yet well maintained & classy. While the beach is not exactly pristine, it was still pretty nice (perfect sand, clear turquoise water, not completely private but definitely felt like it, sadly some trash washed up to the beach) there is somewhat of an effort by the staff and the nearby jetski shop staff to pick up the trash. I can understand how this place was such a stunner 25 years ago and started the Aman craze, even now it is still a beautiful space
Pros
~1 of the nicest beaches, so little traffic it felt like a private paradise. At peak hour I shared the crescent beach with only a few other couples and a family of four
~ great sense of privacy and a fantastic place to chill out and relax. Phuket can be a very busy place, but for space & privacy Aman is great, very spacious private grounds overall, especially for Western part of Phuket where every inch of space/beach has been snapped up
~ I was in Garden Pavilion...Amanpuri

~ I was in Garden Pavilion 202, some might find the flights of steps annoying (starting from the beach). I thought it was fine, would be silly to have to rely on a buggy all the time, plus you eat so well here the extra steps justifies the pigging out.
~ I didn't check out the pilates studio/gym nor attend the yoga/qigong classes but heard facilities are pretty high standard. I was thrilled to find a yoga mat in my room and enjoyed the solo practice.
~ good Aman service (I'm an Aman junkie and I didn't notice a lower level of service vs the newer Amans) ie was able to pass out on the beach under the sun knowing the staff would continue to move my umbrella. The staff served the guests at the beach with skewers of mango, dragonfruit, watermelons. Post spa got served papayas and pineapples (no boring fruits at the Aman). As soon as I woke up from my first morning nap on the beach the asst GM came by to introduce herself & greeted me by name, my deliciously spicy and fresh thai dishes always arrived minutes after I ordered. The room was always cleaned up when I returned with replenished fruit plate, hair conditioner etc.
~ loved the spa's massages, two treatments were not enough!
~ free wifi everywhere incl the beach
Cons
~ was here for two nights, on Saturday at the beach one'd hear slight sounds of drilling and renovation coming from the one of the b&b shops down the beach, not within Aman's control though
~ if I was the GM I would ask the beach staff to spend more time cleaning the trash washed up onto the beach
~ bring deet for the evenings outdoor, Aman's lemongrass mossie repellent did not work More
