“Fantastic hotel!”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

Beautiful and quiet environment! Cosy room! Warm and friendly hospitality!
It's a fantastic hotel for anybody who just want a quiet holiday far away from city and crows. Old style but beautiful and clean properties. Small but lovely garden and huge harm nearby definitely add a lot credit to this hotel.

Although there are still plenty of signs of flooding it is slowly disappearing.
Barton Cross has suffered a little but is still open for business .
We had a warm welcome and a cosy pre-dinner drink in the well stocked but homely bar.
Dinner was very good and an imaginative menu, scallops in a coconut curry followed by chicken breast stiffed with goat cheese.
A good wine list reasonably priced, with some surprises (pleasant ones).
The room was spacious with beautiful views out onto the courtyard.
A good English breakfast set us up well for a day of walking.
We will definitely go again

This is really a hidden gem for food near Exeter. Celebrating my mum's birthday this weekend with friends we had yet another fantastic evening here. Brian is a perfect host. Extensive wine list to suit all tastes/pockets. Starting with nibbles in the bar (freshly made by chef) then a choice of starters. We opted for scallops with coconut curry, ham hock terrine, lasagne of artichokes and goats cheese. There is a quaint intermediate course of soup or sorbet (both delicious). Mains arrived and were equally delicious: Venison loin with mini suet pudding, sea bass with ginger, beef fillet with herb crust, salmon with white wine and duck. Puddings completed the feast: Ice cream in brandy baskets, the lightest sticky toffee pudding, iced Tiramisu and tarte tartin. Stuffed - we relaxed in the bar in front of a blazing log fire with coffee and handmade petite fours. At £30 p/head excluding coffee and wine - bargain for the quality.

A warm welcome, cosy ambience, great attention to detail and food that never disappoints. Brian really does get it right! I've lost count of the number of times we have eaten at Barton Cross, and we've also stayed overnight when we don't wish to drive the few miles home. It's been our favourite venue for years.

We've been coming here for many years - we had our wedding reception here and come back for our anniversary meal every year..
We have never been disappointed with the ambience and the amazing food. In winter it is always so nice to walk into a cosy lounge area with a roaring fire. The welcome is warm and it is a great place to just unwind & relax.
The food is gorgeous, all home-made. My husband's steak was cooked perfectly, my venison suet pudding was gorgeous.Having visited many restaurants in and around Exeter 'The Barton Cross Hotel' is fantastic value for money.
We would highly recommend it for a meal and as a hotel to stay in...

Fab food and personal service. Evening dinner excellent (all 3 courses equally good, homemade bread), breakfast was one of the best full English's we have had for ages. Room comfy with good facilities, even welcomed our dog and gave us a room with French windows so we had easy access to outside. The décor maybe dated and quirky and not at all like an executive hotel (if that is what you want perhaps a holiday Inn would suit you best), but we prefer hotels like this with character!

Unfortunately we only stayed one night in this lovely hotel. Everything was very welcoming and the owner could not have been more helpful (organising early breakfast for us as it was my daughters graduation). The evening meal was a wonderful experience fabulous food and a great vegaterian menu as well. The family room we had (for 3 adults) was spacious and comfortable. Will definately try and return in the future hopefully for a longer stay.
