Waikaremoana Holiday Park
Reviewed March 31, 2013

A lovely camp site with very good facilities. The scenery is beautiful and the sites are well set out. The store was well stocked but would recommend that you get your groceries in a bigger town as the prices are more than the city would be. The staff were very friendly at check in and I had a very nice hot shower.Just wish that parents would not allow their children to make so much noise.I came to experience the park with the scenery and quiet but could not get that with all the noise.

A pleasant campsite with good, clean facilities makes a good base for doing the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. The lady at reception wasn't particular friendly when we arrived, but was ok the following day, so maybe she was just having a bad day. The campsite can arrange transportation to and from the trailheads and has a car park specifically for people doing the Great Walk around the lake.

Accommodation options are limited (I think there's one other motor camp and possibly a handful of basic campsites) and the approach is either 95km of unsealed road from the north, or a much shorter length of unsealed road from the east. The views of the lake (on a clear day) from the road are great though, and the twisty road is great fun to drive.

Lake Waikeremoana is stunning and so worth the drive to get to it. We travelled inland from the East coast, when we turned the corner and had our first view if the Lake, I was totally WOWED. (I have travelled extensively around the world, and seen some amazing places/sites, so it takes quite a lot to Wow me!) We were very lucky that we had a beautiful sunny day, clear blue skies (and this was over the Easter holidays). The campsite is right on the waters edge. We were travelling in a campervan and picked a site furthest away from the reception as here we had a Lakefront site, what a beautiful view of the sparkling water. It is a very tranquil area, has lovely walks long or short, all around. We have an infant and young child, so only did a couple of short walks, we walked to the visitor centre and then about 20 mins from there, made it to a waterfall, which again was very impressive. (Sounded like a mini Niagra) We sat out at night and the sky was a blanket of stars, it was truly amazing. The campsite has a well stocked shop, fuel, food incl meat, hot pies, ice blocks, personal items, etc etc. It was very good value for money. There was a kitchen/dining area which all looked clean and tidy, this had lovely views of the Lake, though we cooked in our van as had our own wonderful views. There are a couple of toilet/shower blocks, the ones closer to the reception a bit more modern than the ones near us, as expected for a rural campsite. If the weather is looking good then this place is an absolute MUST DO!

Room Tip: If camping or in a motorhome, pick a site away from the reception, by the waters edge.
