A sweet stop on the Pict Trail to seem some fascinating carvings and fanciful mosaics, try your hand at rubbings and at the Celtic harp, great gift shop for Celtic symbology. The volunteer staff we met was so helpful and passionate on the subject.

Weekend opening hours are quite restrictive (as it is a small local museum) so I planned our day's activities to be sure we would be able to visit here. We had already visited the Shandwick Stone a bit further north, and this museum of Pictish stone carvings held some rubbings of that stone, done 30 or so years ago, and a piece of art in their own right. The Rosemarkie Stone was held in the museum, with some good interpretation of what the carvings meant. There was also an exhibition of art by George Bain, which interested me as I have a number of his books on Celtic design, so it was good to see some of his other work. The shop area of the museum had an excellent range of books on Pictish art and Scottish history, and their range of gifts was also out of the ordinary.

Free to enter and easy to find. Helpful guide on duty talked about some of the artifacts on display. Watched short film about Pictish history and places to visit. Good collection of huge carved stones. Got a chance to play a small harp and was more tuneful than I thought I would be! Upstairs has a display of artwork by George Bain.
