Victory at Mersea
Reviewed January 19, 2010

If you want a quiet romantic weekend look elsewhere. If you like fist-pumping music while you lie in bed until closing time this is just the place for you. As a bonus during winter (if you should be staying in the spa suite, top-left, as you look at the hotel from the front - Room 1 if memory serves correct) they have a smoking area outside in the car park with a heater which many people stand under while talking very loudly. The bed creaks and groans, and that's when you are just breathing, and is desperate need of replacement. The shower head attachment, when we stayed there had partially parted company from its top-piece and the water shot out of the side and down the wall rather than over you. It didn't look like it had just happened, so seems maintenance is pretty slack. If you have to stay here make sure you get a room over the saloon bar or restaurant as anything over the public bar is going to be really noisy. Breakfast is served at their convenience at 9.00am so if you want an early start you could go hungry. The owners profess to be ex-marketers in their blurb and nothing is too much trouble. Seems to us that there is still much work to be done.

Apologies to this guest as they stayed just before we invested over £2000 on soundproofing for the rooms which we have tested and it has proved very effective. We are currently replacing all the windows with double glazing along with other renovations.
Our suggested breakfast time of 9am can be very flexible, customers only have to ask. Thank you for the feedback, we can only improve if we are advised of any shortcomings, and we usually ask for feedback, both verbally and customer comment cards.

From their website, I was expecting better. The outside environment is down-at-heel, as was the exterior approach to our room (up an outside staircase and across a communal balcony).
It had a neglected feel to the outside; lots of dying plants, ugly tatty plaster animals, plastic hanging fake leaf globes (!?). They seem to have lost interest in the outside, obviously not heard of "kerb appeal."
Inside is clean and comfortable if characterless. Our room was clean, perfectly adequate, and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was fine, even if the lightswitch had to be tried 3 times EVERY single time, before coming on. I have no complaints about the room.
My main issue was with the breakfast sevice, and the one evening meal we had.
Breakfast was at 9am (not 9-10, or 9- anything else, just 9am.)
We arrived at 9am, and nothing happened till 9.25 when we got some tea. Despite pleading expressions and verbal requests, it was 35 mins altogether until any food arrived.
We could have had a lie-in. It was a holiday, after all.
The waitress was pleasant but clueless and unprofessional.
No offer of a choice of white or brown bread resulted in nasty cardboard white toast. Wiser, the next day we got brown by asking. Usually they do ask you in B&Bs, and after 35 mins I was off my guard.
Breakfast was unremarkable when it arrived, but adequate.
My impression of their B&B service is that it is, to them, a rmoney-making adjunct to their pub business, and that is all. There was little attention to service in comparison to most other B&Bs I've stayed in recently. Probably due to the limited accomodation on Mersea they think they are doing their guests a big favour just by existing.
Evening meal was Fawlty Towers-standard. I had an inedible Caesar salad, and I can eat pretty much anything, but it was foul; scalding hot (microwaved presumably) bone-dry chicken on a collapsed heap of 3rd degree burnt salad, drenched with cheapo dressing, and scattered with out-of-a-not very good-packet croutons.
My partner warily ordered cheese and biscuits as he wasn't very hungry, and incongruously got enough for both of us, which was just as well as I couldn't eat mine.
It was actually quite good, but how wrong can a chef get cheese and biscuits?
It's a shame because there is little accomodation on Mersea, and the Victory is resting on it's laurels having a nice sea view.

Apologies to this guest and we can offer no excuse if they found the food unacceptable, we would have replaced or otherwise made good had we been told at the time. We have recently appointed a new head chef and customer response has been extremely positive.
For some reason the guest used the fire escape as their entrance rather than through the building.
