Having stayed in other hotels in Hope Cove with great disappointment we found this hidden Gem. The views were outstanding across Bigbury bay and our balcony room was a great favourite with our dog. The food was simple but wholesome and tasty. William and Sarah made us and our dog all feel very welome and nothing was too much trouble. We cannot wait to return in the summer.

Having stayed there for five Christmases so far, we can only give our experiences for that time of year.
We book for the Christmas house party each year, and each year we are not disappointed. The hotel is certainly showing its age, but surely that is it's charm! The original building was started in the 1800s and has been added to over the years giving a sort of 'home from home' feel to the place which is perfect for getting away from it all. Built on the side of a hill overlooking the sea, the views are spectacular and bring us back each year. With two car parks, the upper and the lower, the hotel can arrange to reserve a parking spot for those who cannot take the hilly walk.
The staff are very helpful and accommodating and you only have to ask for any preferences and they try their hardest to make your stay enjoyable. Being a Family run hotel, this certainly shows in the care they give to each guest.
On the food front, they have a well staffed kitchen with excellent chefs who work hard to provide good quality food with something for all palates. Much of the foods are sourced from local suppliers with an emphasis on quality. The quality of presentation is great and the choice wide, the portions are very generous and you are often told more is available should you require it. A firm favourite of the restaurant is the Sweet Trolley which has almost 'Mega Star' status amongst the guests which has a veritable mouth-watering collection of Home Made offerings from the kitchen - Yummee!
We have always found our room to be clean, cared for and the housekeeping is well done and efficient. Many of the rooms have been refurbished and we believe more are to be done along with some of the public areas being modernised.
The area is quiet when we visit at Christmas but we go to have a rest and we appreciate the peace. We walk along the beautiful beaches and cliff walks, visit Burgh Island, and take in Dartmouth, Totnes and other surrounding places and feel calmed and renewed when we finally leave.
The overall atmosphere is Brilliant and the feel of the hotel is homely and inviting.

What a lovely experience. The setting is wonderfull, the service from all the staff is first class. The food is second to none. The whole place is comfortable. The style of the place is such that you could almost imagine Miss Marple appearing in the lounge !!!
We took my elderly parents for a few days break & this is an ideal place. With such wonderful views across the coast & sea we could leave them in comfort to watch the world go by when they were tired. We were too late with our booking to get a front bedroom with sea views but even the back bedrooms are very nice & who stays in their room all day on holiday anyway !
If there is a down side, we would not think The Cottage would suit teenageers or those in their early twenties looking for action, its just not that sort of place.

This is a hotel with a difference;- caught in time, stunning location, mouth-watering food, excellent staff, magnificent views, tremendous walks - and then there's William Ireland!!!! The man makes the hotel what it is. He is witty and informative, works non-stop, cares genuinely about his guests and no request is too much trouble. It was well worth the trip from Northern Ireland. Good luck William on your wedding day in January 2010.

This was our third journey to the Cottage and we looked upon it as a perfect way to chill out after a couple of difficult months at work. Not their fault that my car blew up shortly before reaching Totnes, and that my wife was in agony throughout with a severe ear infection. Chilling out therefore not easy, but the helpfulness and caring attitude of the owners and staff, who assisted us with great efficiency with each disaster as it unfolded, kept us from leaping off the clifftops! The place is simply exquisite - a time-warp, maybe, but what's wrong with a bygone age? The room offered its usual delightful view of the Cove and was spotlessly clean. The food and service were unfailingly excellent, although walking up the stairs after their five course dinner was a struggle on occasion. Peaceful with charming residents and locals all around - Hope Cove doesn't appear to have attracted a lager lout mentality yet! We generally visit every four years - we will not wait that long to return. Thank you William and Sarah, for your first rate service.

I have met people all over the country (UK) who have visited Hope Cove and whenever I mention this small oasis of old world charm it is amazing how many of their faces light up and say "Did you stay at the Cotage Hotel, what a fabulous place"

Hope Cove is special, and the Cottage Hotel is part of that specialness.

It is a little like going back a few years in time, and the care, attentiveness and genuine friendlness of all the staff to us and all the other guests, over our many years of visiting, is to be valued as part of a truly relaxing time there.

Food is particularly enjoyable at all times of the day.

My work takes me to a number of hotels in this country and overses through the year and the Cottage Hotel is my favourite. It is equally a family favoutite for us all as well.

A young couple we know from Cambridgeshire had their wedding reception there a few years ago, with all the guests travelling down. They were not disappointed!

Look at what the hotel offers as it will not be what everone is looking for. There are some some facilities you may require that are not there.

Yes, a definate 5 stars from us!!!

The Cottage on Hope Cove is a real retreat. Its not modern luxury decor but has all the best aspects of a traditional British hotel. The staff are genuinely friendly and helpful, the food is excellent with a set dinner that goes on for course after course and all in a restaurant where you can gaze out to sea. The rooms at the back of the hotel are very small but also very good value.
