“weekend break”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

Stayed for the weekend with friends for a 'murder mystery' break. The entertainment was a hoot ! The food was excellent on both evenings with silver service for dinner. Breakfast was a buffet arrangement plus specific orders if required with plenty of fresh toast and coffee/tea brought to the table. The room we had (with sea view) was comfortable with a good shower. The hotel in general was spotlessly clean and in good decorative order. The staff very friendly and helpful. Really enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: sea view room lovely

The Cottage hotel is a family run hotel from a by-gone era. It's a comfortable hotel with excellent service and tasty food in a beautiful, tranquil spot with great coastal views walks. It is, hovever, very old fashioned so it may not suit younger tastes.

Room Tip: See view rooms are well worth having.

I have just returned from a short break and this traditional hotel provides everything one needs for rest, relaxation, good food and stunning scenery. It's true the decor is dated but the hotel is clean, the reception staff are welcoming and all the waiting staff know exactly what they should be doing and when. Their timing is perfect and service is very efficient. The cuisine is plentiful and varied and all the ingredients appeared to be fresh. The pudding trolley positively groans with temptation. My only mild criticism of the restaurant is that after mealtimes, it would be a good idea to crack open a window (just a little bit due to the exposure) and let some fresh air circulate - if you get my drift?

The ground floor room I stayed in was situated at the far corner of this long building. A porter is available but getting to it involved a treck with suitcase through the dining room, or, it could be approached across the front exterior walkway, and in via a side entrance at the far end. By virtue of the hotel's amazing setting, the room, on two sides, was very exposed to the elements which during my stay were exceptionally high winds accompanied by lashing rain on one night. This cant be helped of course, but it can be disturbing. Furthermore this particular room only has one electric panel heater (plus heated towel rail in the large bathroom) so with it's tall ceiling, and the exposure, it might not be most comfortable for a winter break? Even in October, it meant my bed felt cold during the first night. The blankets are acrylic but duvets are available "in the deluxe rooms upstairs." and maybe on request for other rooms? Nevertheless, I would certainly return to this hotel because it has an old fashioned courtesy where they remember your name and do everything possible to ensure a happy stay. These days that really counts, and I rather liked it!

Room Tip: During cooler months consider taking a hot water bottle in case your bed doesn't have a duvet an...

We stayed at the Cottage Hotel Hope Cove last week as a short 3 night break for my Mother's 91st birthday, when they found it was her birthday they changed her room to the ground floor which made her stay so much better, they also made a special menu for her and decorated the table for dinner. The staff are some of the best we have come across nothing was to much trouble. We had room 225 which had big bay windows overlooking the cove, all the rooms are clean and well fitted out and we found the hotel to be very good value for money and would highly recommened this hotel and we will return again for our fourth visit.

Room Tip: go for room 225 over looking the bay

Having spent time in many hotels from budget to luxery this hotel is certiany not luxery but it is very comfortable. What is fantastic about the Cottage Hotel is something which even the best hotels in the world cannot match is an extroadinary genuine sense of hospitality and service. The dining was always eagerly anticipated maybe not michelin star but it always satisfied a healthy appetite. It is a location to be experienced for oneself to know how beautiful it can be !! It's neighbours Thurlstone,Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Bantham, Bigbury on Sea and Burgh Island provide added interest and enjoyment. On a trip to Bigbury on sea we took a tidal road where bird watchers were in force therefore an area clearly of interest for twitchers !! On a personal note to finish I would like to thank Sarah and her staff because they handled a medical emergency with appropriate urgency and care - my partner is doing fine thank God.

An excellent little hotel, amazing customer service and superb food. A little outdated on the decor but spotlessly clean and very welcoming.

Great value for money. Highly recommended for families, couples, young and old!

This is a completely unique hotel that offers a wonderful nostalgic experience, a throw back to a bygone more genteel age. The accommodation is dated but the location is fantastic with fabulous views over the delightful Hope Cove. The lounges are fifties / sixties with a plethora of photos that provide a pictorial history of the hotel, local characters and the village. Dinners are predominantly English cuisine, with a generous selection of courses. The service is a unique blend of formal presentation and witty comments provided by the owner / maître d - William Ireland. Leave room for the 'sweet trolley'!
For those who love nostalgia - this place is not to be missed. If you hanker after modernity - try somewhere else.

Room Tip: Get a room that faces the sea - the view is spectacular and the sunsets beyond romantic.
