We stayed at the Mayan over Thanksgiving. My sister had booked it through a vacation club she belongs to. There were 7 of us and we had a great time. We never got asked once to see their time share presentation. We swam in the ocean every day. We had to walk down the beach a ways because the resort had black flags out all the time but there were red flags down at the other resorts. We played in the waves and made sure we could always touch bottom to keep from being pulled out by the undertow. Other times we laid by and swam in the pool. Edgar was our pool guy and he got us sandwiches, drinks, chairs, whatever we needed. He was great. Prices are a little high but the food was great. Service was top notch. Only small issue with the poolside entertainment guy. He kept making bets with my college age nephew and his friend and when they would win he would change the deal and not give them what they had won. Mainly cervezas. This was my first time to Mexico and though had a great time at the resort, did not like the "Mexican" experience. But would stay here again if I ever come back.

This is an awesome resort located within a 20 minute walking distance to San Jose Del Cabo where you can experience the old world ambience, with quaint restaurants, boutiques, and a great art district. Don't miss the Thursday night art walk where artist's display their art, share wine and appetizers while viewing wonderful art galleries. The hotel ambience is beautiful, with large luxurious rooms, we enjoyed the Honeymoon suite. We had a nice private wading pool on our deck, and the view from our room was stunning. Also, walks on the beach are a must. The beach is beautiful, and very clean. You can walk for miles with very few people. The hotel staff is very accommodating, everyone is extremely friendly, truly interested in making your stay as pleasurable as they can. Romel the concierge hooked us up with some great restaurants, a great tennis match with the tennis pro. Humberto and Marco at the front desk talked with us daily about our travels in Cabo. The restaurants in the resort are excellent, fish tacos are very good, and the breakfast buffet is also delicious. The recreation pool staff Tony and Kevin are really fun guys. We made only one mistake on our trip, and that was the Grand Mayan timeshare presentation!

We were a bit apprehensive about this resort exchange having read some of the negative reviews, but were more than pleasantly surprised. When reading reviews, I guess one has to wonder about the expectations of the reviewers, their personalities, and how they treated the staff. We found that being friendly and polite had a wonderfully positive response. Most of the staff knew us by our names within the first 2 days, and we had a great time trying out our limited Spanish with them. They were always very helpful.

There was no real pressure to do the time-share presentation. We simply told them we were not interested. The resort is lovely and quiet; I would say most of the guests were over 50 so it was not a "party" setting and there were few children. Our room was clean and spacious and all rooms have ocean views and balconies. It took 2 requests to get a refrigerator, but we did get one.

Grand Mayan really knows how to do pools! If you are a swimmer you will love them -- 50 yards wide and hardly anyone in them. It was convenient to be so close to the airport. We have been in Cabo san Lucas twice, and the time saved driving was really a plus. The town is close by and if you're there on a Thursday, enjoy the Art Walk when all galleries are open. There are great restaurants as well -- such fresh produce and seafood! The proprietors of the stores are not as pushy as in many other towns.

Normally we like to try out different resorts, but we will probably return to this Grand Mayan.

Room Tip: Try to be on the north side of the pools; there is a restaurant on the south side and it can be nois...

We have been to Cabo San Lucas 5 times, but this is our first time staying in San Jose Del Cabo. The Grand Mayan is an awesome property. The room was great with a small plunge pool on our balcony which was huge. Nice view from our room. The resort was very quiet. Service at the hotel was outstanding. Loved staying in San Jose too which was a much slower pace. Hope to return next year.

The Grand Mayan is really grand! The Suites are luxurious, the beach has white sand and turquoise water, the facilities are fantastic, the food is first class, and the service is superb! It was sunny and in the low 80's in the middle of November, one of the best times to go to the Cabo area. The entry is stunning, and the lobby is over-the-top. All of the suites have full kitchens, separate bedrooms, and an ocean view. The service is impeccable, and the food is fantastic. Check out the romantic ambiance at the PeriQ restaurant by the pools, especially at night with the blue lights in the pools. Don't miss the wonderful Mexican Fiesta with fabulous food and drink, and the super show with dancers, singers, and a live band.

Also, if you ever go to either San Jose Del Cabo (East of Cabo San Lucas on the Gulf of California side of Baja), or Cancun, or Nuevo Vallarta (next to Puerto Vallarta), check out the new Grand Bliss Resorts, by the Mayan organization. They are spectacular, and well worth it! The one in San Jose Del Cabo is adjacent to the Ritz Carlton, and is located on one the best beaches in the world. It is supposed to open in March, 2014.

Room Tip: Go high and toward the ocean side.

This one was kind of weird since I am off for 3 months on a medical. It wasn't like the usual get away from work but it was nice to have something concrete to do and the weather was far better than home.
We are Grand Mayan owners and we booked thru RCI it was cheaper plus we got an extra room as we had hoped to bring another couple ( no one could join us ). So I was concerned would we be treated as members or guests. Lets start with airport pick-up I was concerned when the when I emailed the resort and they said they use a contractor to pick guests up. They won't be responsible for what they do or don't do never heard this before so is that because we booked thru RCI ? I called the Mayan main office in the states and they explained that is the arrangement for all guests. They do this as a courtesy to help you feel welcome but don't pay for your cab if you choose to take one. You shouldn't miss your ride there are several of these available and you are responsible for a ride back ( 30 pesos or $25 US ) to the airport.
Once we got to the resort we were able to check in right away we have been to some Mayans where we couldn't check in until 5. We went and got our armbands and were explained we would get our full benefits of our Grand Mayan ownership ( I emailed a copy of my contract before we arrived ). We should receive full benefit its not whether we booked with RCI ( many do ) its about the thousands we paid to be members.
We agreed to do the timeshare although many had posted horror stories for us its about what we can get in return ( excursions ). They gave us 10% off our bill ( food, drink, gift shop only ) 1000 pesos and discounts on excursions ( we did the swim and ride with the dolphins $75 ea. ) and spa extras. ( you can't charge excursions or massage to the room for an additional 10% ).
Back to the timeshare here is the LESSON to all if you truly don't want to go say no and ignore them if they ask again. If you do go I think there is a difference in the time you will spend if you are already an owner or you are not. They told us 1 1/2 and that close to what it was you sit and talk first then have breakfast ( excellent food ) then here the presentation. They all go thru this structured speech complete with doodle drawings. I am ADHD and they lose me early thank god my wife gets it. Here is LESSON # 2 don't let them ramble on they will throw a lot out there to confuse you get to the price. If you truly don't want to or can't afford to buy then be firm make something up if you have too. For us we just bought a new house recently and still have to sell our other. We were clear that this wasn't the time to spend 9k to 14k on an upgrade so he shook our hands said thank-you. We were on our way still with the extras we were promised to attend ( don't let them back out of these ). If you do buy get everything your salesman promised in writing we have experienced not all promises come true.

The Resort was beautiful and what we have come to expect but since it is older it is a little in need of repair in some areas. This resort is smaller than some of their others but we liked it because everything is close. The ocean is more or less off limits its swim at your own risk very strong under tow which may explain no beach chairs. ( you can go to Chileno, Pamilla or Playa beach if you want to swim in the ocean they are a close drive ).
The pool is nice but not very deep and it seemed warmer at the start of the week. It is in 3 sections the closest to the lobby with the big fountain is the warmest. The middle is the second warmest and the one facing the beach is the least but also the best area to lay out for sun. We found right away if you want a spot in front to lay out set your stuff out early. Some people put things out as early as 6am but near the end the resort was cracking down on this.

As for excursions we booked 3 online ( it can be cheaper that way ) with cabo San Lucas tours before we left. You can do a web search for Cabo san lucas excursions and it will bring up several but be aware not all pick up at the resort read the fine print or call. We did the city tour, ultimate beach hopping ( snorkel ) , and scooters. All 3 were real good my recent disc surgery on my back kept me from doing the ones I really wanted to do ( ziplines, atv and scuba ). In fact on the ultimate beach hop we saw whales on the way back they were early for the season. The one complaint about the beach hop is that they take pictures ( you can take your own ). But then they sell for $ 35 ( not a bad price ) for a video and a disc of pictures and won't separate the two I would never watch the video more than once. We also did the dolphins but only because of the amount of the discount from the timeshare it was well worth it. BUT if you want pictures you have to buy theirs no cameras. $ 35 for a single pic ( ouch ! ) and $ 120 for a disc of 103 pics ( double ouch ! ) We bought the $120 figured this would be the only time with dolphins. When it comes to excursions for us its about price versus time involved, quality, what's offered like food or ( open bar real seller for me ha ,ha )

As far as food we always cook for our selves so since we have a kitchen and eat out a couple of times. The mega is the best place for all your needs it is a 15 minute walk from the resort and a cab back is 70 pesos ( we had more than we could carry ). On the way we were hungry so we stopped at Tantu taco ( their is a bank of shops across from the resort but many are pricey ).
Back to the taco place my wife sees on the menu $ 1 taco so we stop and order two plus a double quesadilla and a beer to split. Once we got the food we now know why the waitress looked at us like is that all you want. The taco was the size of an appetizer and the quesadilla was for one. But it filled us up enough for only $7. Drinks at the resort are pricey best time to get them is during some of their happy hours 128 pesos. BUT BE AWARE WHEN CHARGING DRINKS AND FOOD THE TIP IS ALREADY ADDED IN SOME PEOPLE WE MET DIDN'T KNOW THIS.
Speaking of money you can exchange at the resort a better rate than the airport but I would just get enough for tipping and such. Most vendors and such you meet quote in US dollars and seem to want that more than pesos.
As for other eats we read reviews before hand and one of the best was Habeneros ( great food and good prices we found ) it is a short 10 minute walk from the resort towards downtown del cabo. The Tropicana was rated well but people we met didn't think it was that could and was pricey and people spoke well about La Dolce in Del cabo. In the end its all about personal preference.
As for shopping San Jose del cabo offers a ton of good shops whether it is 10 minutes walk from the resort ( small strip of shops ). Our you can walk an additional 10 minutes to downtown del cabo where their is a ton of shops from silver to liquor or souviners or restaurants. There are so many of the same kind of shops right next to each other I wonder how anybody makes money.
When it comes to buying offer half in many cases and work from there most will bargin if they don't have set prices we got good deals on silver.
There is liquor shop in downtown del cabo it is on the corner on a street that leads to a bridge it has a brown awning and I thinks its called liquor boutique. The owner is a great guy and makes his own tequila in fact we met many people in his store that were regulars. Even thou he carries many brands and you can sample I suggest buying his. We bought a peach, orange, and honey dew melon tequilas from him he even has his own bar next door and makes great cocktails.

We loved the San Jose Del cabo area for is walking proximity to shops and the downtown areas and its peaceful surroundings. But I do suggest going to Cabo San Lucas its well worth it but the atmosphere can be crazy as its a younger crowd. Most excursions happen from there and you will find it very congested in the bay. If you don't do an excursion from there take a water taxi lovers beach for the day. You may see some whales , you will surely get to view sea lions in fact one was up on the platform of a boat getting food. Cabo Wabo ( Sammy Hagar's bar ) is there but we didn't go heard it was pricey. You will find Cabo Wabo stores in several places even the airport but they are pricey even his own brand of tequila. We saw his house it is half way between del cabo and san lucas.
All in all we had a great time and met many fabulous people at the resort and on excursions from around the world. We will go back at some point but for now we like to experience different places. I know this review is lengthy but I wanted to share what we experienced and the things we found to be true or not true from reviews we read before going.

Part 1:
We had the pleasure of joining our friends on a week long trip to San Jose del Cado and we stayed at The Grand Mayan. Our friends are owners at this wonderful location and we had a terrific week exploring the area.
Upon arrival we ate at the restaurant property, PeriQ. It is an outdoor spot that serves generous portions of tasty food along side great drinks. We lingered outdoors, poolside, waiting for our rooms. Once they were ready, we made our way to the 6th floor and found our ajoining rooms.

Room Tip: Our entry door faced the street. They are doing some undergroung pipe repairs right in front of this...
