“Great sun, Pools for Polar Bears!”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

Two weeks at The Grand Mayan and I have come away not loving it but not hating it either. We are owners so our double bedroom suite was on the upper floor looking out over the ocean. Fantastic view of the water and the resort. The rooms are "interesting". I truly don't believe they are equipped with comfort in mind: there are only 2 chairs for the deck & 2 lounge chairs that are useless in the evening when you want to sit and have a drink. The furniture in the suite is uncomfortable to sit on and not designed particularly well. The beds... ohhh...so uncomfortably hard with weird pillows. Equipment in the room (utensils, dishes,...) is okay. Not great, but manageable.

In terms of the resort, the pool and chairs were a major issue. The pools are unheated and they are cold! It was 26 C every day and you could just dip yourself into them and then you needed to get out. As well, there is a lack of lounge chairs for the resort. They have all of these stupid, unused cabanas instead of more chairs and tables for around the pool. The great part about the pools is that they are large and cover a big area so you can choose where you want to be - near the activities or in a quiet secluded area.

The time share presentation is a major issue. It is too long and not effective. There should be some respect for people's time and desire to be out in the sun. That is why they came!.

Location - is great. It is walkable to the Old Town for dinners and a great stroll. As well, it is just a ten minute walk to Mega for some beer and groceries when needed. The Staff, I thought was great. They were courteous and friendly and tried to make the most out of everything for us.

Fireworks display on American Thanksgiving was great!!! A fantastic show and unexpected surprise.

Room Tip: Higher floors - best view and least noise.

So here is the bottom line:
THE DEAL BREAKER
The pool is not heated and is very cold. The air is 88 degrees the end of November and nobody is in the pools. Hot tubs are warm and with the little kids are the biggest urnals in all of Mexico. The staff has been trained to lie about the pools. We heard the heater is stuck in customs in LA, the pools are heated the 1st of Dec. and then we talked to 2 men who have been 4 times and they told us the pools are never heated. Beautiful looking resort but you can't swim in the ocean (too dangerous) and you will not want to get hypothermia in the pools.
POOLSIDE
No tables - no chairs - only lounge chairs that are wood with a foam pad that is wet from the previous user. And there is not nearly enough lounge chairs but they have over 35 queen sized beds that nobody uses around the pool - what a joke. Very few and far between pool waiters so you wait a long time for your service and even longer for your cold food to arrive. The restaurant by the pool is a high end fancy place and not a place where you can get a quick bite while at the pool. Pools are very big though - probably loose 500 gallons of evaporation per day in the heat - maybe that is why they do not heat them.
ROOMS
We had a 2 bedroom suite. Very nice and large BUT 1 knife that was so dull could not cut butter, a stove vent that looks great but did not work at all, no bathroom fan for steam or toilet odors. And the bed was a pillow top concrete mattress. Had a sore back every morning. You are told not to drink the water - the water softner is nonfunctional so you never get the soap rinsed from your shower and feel very slimy after taking a shower.
EXPENSES
Sorry but I don't like paying $11.00 for a shot of rock gut tequilla or $5.50 for a Corona when a 6 pack is $5.00 at the local Walmart. They do have 2 for 1 happy hour - what a joke - 2:00 to 3:00 at one bar then 3:00 to 4:00 at another bar - nothing during normal happy hour - and then again from 6:00 to 7:00 at the lobby bar which is far away from the pool.
OUR DEAL
I booked this through RCI. Paid $521.00 for 7 nights AND got a $300.00 voucher for food - A RCI Last Call super deal. They have 4 levels of guests and RCI guests are considered the bottom of the barrel and get the lower floor units with virtually no view.
TIME SHARE
If you want to totally ruin your vacation sit throught the 90 minute time share presentation that takes 5 hours. The saying for those in the know is "YOUR BUYIN OR YOUR CRYIN AT THE MAYAN". It will be bruttal beyond words. Avoid at all costs. You can get the same deal on the time share secondary market for about 10% fo the cost they will ask you to pay. Just Google time share resellers. Biggest National seller is located in Seattle.
GENERAL
This place is beautiful - no question - big rooms and a big beach. BUT it is built for LOOKS ONLY - pool is too cold - bed is too hard - utensils are bad and few - no ventalation - few waiters - management tells the staff to lie to guests, but they are very nice about it. $50.00 steak and lobester was good. This was my 3rd time to Cabo and I've been all over Mexico but will never go back to the San Jose del Cabo Grand Mayan. I am a golfer and the golf is fantastic but very expensive. Good Luck

Room Tip: It will not do any good but you could try to request an upper floor close to the ocean.

The Grand Mayan is absolute gorgeous property. We are owners and had a room on the 4th floor with a great view . The traffic was a bit loud at times - but for the most part not a problem. Bedding is very comfortable, but the pillows were a bit flat had to use two. The Staff is extremely personable and they go out of their way to make your stay pleasant.
We mostly hung out by the pool and had lunch at the resort .. then went out for a quick 5.00 taxi to the town or it is a quick walk.
The pool was very chilly -so the swim up bar was not able to be used --but the wait staff was very attentive and happy hour had 2 for 1 drinks.
Hot tubs very being worked on during our stay so they were not hot at all.
One day we did go horseback riding from a group that went along the beach. Manuel was our guide and he was wonderful . Horses were well cared for and the ride was perfect . Hotel cannot reccommend for liability reasons but It was a great ride and catered to your level of ability.
Can not wait to go back!

Room Tip: fourth floor and above for a great view

We have done several timeshare presentations over the years and this was the worst by far. Not only do they talk to you like you are an idiot they use like, "you would be stupid not to buy....." or "why are you being ridiculous". On top of that they put you through 6-7 people to get through the whole thing. I was ready to just leave and forget the gifts and my deposit.
My advice stay clear!

Great location on the Sea of Cortez. Every room has an ocean view. The pool is very big but not heated. It will be somewhat cold from Novemeber through March. It has a nice hot tub and numerous pool side covered beds that are free. The rooms are spacious and well decorated. Everything is in good repair since the resort has only been open since 2008. The staff is very attentive. The only downside is the timeshare presentations (they don't call them that). They will last for 3-4 hours and the pressure is so high you will be very unhappy. Cab ride to San Jose del Cabo is very cheap. The Mayan offers a shuttle to Cabo San Lucas for $32 round trip for two people. A rental car is about $60 per day and remember to accept full insurance.
When you exit the Mayan, take a short walk to your right. About 1/4 mile you will see the Holiday Inn. Just beyond the Holiday Inn is a wonderful wildlife estuary with a great assortment of birds and a walking path that will take you to downtown San Jose del Cabo (about 1 1/4 miles)

Room Tip: They are all good but anything about the first floor is fantastic.

Do not go to this resort if you want the beach and a reasonable trip to Mexico. The food and drink prices are more then in Canada and you feel ripped off every thing you do. Breakfast is $24.00 a beer is $6.50 and a margarita was $12.00, an automatic 15% was added to every bill and then the waiters expect a tip.The internet is $7.00 per hour and they scammed my visa information off my banking site. No respect for the visitors the only toilet at the pool area was closed most of one day and completely the next day they were painting for the high season. I was woken every morning as they dragged there old carts to the kitchen at 630 in the morning. When I complained the 2nd time they sent a man to my room who knocked several times till I answered the door at 630 in the morning. Normally the service was bad nothing would get done when you asked maybe hours later. I was hasseled about changing money the rules changed each exchange and even though I was a quest I was told they needed my passport every time. Hard to relax in this resort when you know they are taking advantage of you every step of the way and the small town joins in on taking you for a ride. A meal that would cost me $18.00 in Canada costs $29.00 and then $6.00 for a beer. They sell you a time share and then wait to have you their captive audience so they can rip you off. I would highly recommend avoiding this hotel.

Room Tip: Don't stay here

First off, beautiful property. As soon as check in, I was asked to go to a orientation the following morning including breakfast. We had to wait 45 minutes for our rep to arrive. Sat down and rep explained our meeting. There are upgrades to be shown to me, but as I pointed out, I had just spent $20,000 a year ago for my time share, and as this was my first visit, I was not interested. At this point, no orientation, no breakfast, much to our dismay. (my girlfrend was traveling with me.) Also, my job was terminated so I was also not employed. As theek progressed, my girlfriend used the internet in the gift shop. Please do not use it, as her Two Visas's were compromised. The toilets were plugged twice in the week. The cooling pool on our deck was full of bugs and dirt. When my girlfriend tried to exchange $ to pesos, she was asked repeatedly for her Passport. Carts rumbled through the resort in the early morning approx 6:30 even though our windows were closed shut, still disruptive. The washroom by the pool was closed for 1- 2 days for upgrades for their HIGH season. We finally received a free breakfast after speaking to the Manager. Plus a free trip to the airport, in which the young driver (who said he knew the way around ) dropped us off at the domestic terminal, in which we then had a grab a taxi to the correct terminal. I will never visit this resort again. Thank You.

Room Tip: Choose a room higher than the third floor, less noisy. The ice machine was out of order all week. Tr...
