“Amazing Place”
Reviewed May 1, 2011

Anyone who complains about this place is a fool. The entire place was immaculate, the service excellent. Yeah, don't do the timeshare unless you truly are interested, . and let them know in advance. We were never hassled again. The rooms are huge and we saw whales breeching from our room. They have some activities for kids, teens would be bored, big surprise, the little kids had a blast at the pool. The service was great, food did kinda suck, but it's made for American's, bland. We took the bus to the city it was quick, clean, and 8 pesos. Taxis are all set prices, no need to negotiate. Walked around in the evenings, safe, everyone is friendly. Take a cab to Zippers $, avg, food but right on the surf beach in Costa Azul. Art district has some incredible restaurants $$$, Baja brew pub was good food and beer $$.

The Grand Mayan is owner of the local golf course and responsible for maintenance of the course and the pond. They have failed to execute this responsibility with no treatment of the pond commencing until after local residents were already experiencing an infestation of mosquitoes. Mayan management now claims that the pond is under control (debatable). But accepts no responsibility for the infestation that is still plaguing the locals. The lack of integrity demonstrated in this matter requires a vote of "no confidence" in dealing with this company.

Stayed at here at the end of April and the weather was amazing. 90's but very dry (no humidity) with a refreshing breeze off the ocean, and not a cloud in the sky!
my husband went golfing at the resorts course- 9 holes. It was about $60 including club rentals and cart - that was also discounted because we did the timeshare presentation otherwise it was $100. the timeshare presentation was long but we also got 10% off bill at the end of the week. And yes- the people are pushy and annoying but it saved us money.
The resort is amazing. Huge pools, nice spa, good food. The maid service is also very good, they come in morning and night and were also very pleasant.
We had a one bedroom suite with a kitchen, so we went to the Mega store (like a super walmart) just down the road. it's walkable - but not if you plan on getting a ton of stuff. it is only $5 to catch a cab one way.
We also went to a great local restaurant - Mi Casa - got a cab there and back but food was great!
We walked into San Jose and felt safe.
The ocean isn't ideal to swim in - waves are HUGE and there's a jellyfish warning.
we also did some excursions... ziplines and a sunset dinner cruise. both were awesome!

Room Tip: one bedroom suite sleeps 4 perfectly with kitchen

This is a lovely, romantic and surprisingly quiet resort, even at full capacity. No playgrounds or kids amenities tend to keep family traffic down, though the rooms are designed with lots of additional sleeping accommodation. These are condo style rooms with sweeping views of the expansive pools, white sand beach and the Sea of Cortez beyond. Rooms have extra large balconies with private plunge pools, luxurious bathrooms, well equipped, modern kitchens -- really everything you need. Free WiFi worked well, even at the outer edges of the property. The resort is impeccably clean -- even the sand is raked daily to remove any stray flower petals! Spa feels upscale and light filled - blending the elements, colors and textures of the sand and blue seas. I most appreciated all the lovely outdoor gathering space options from shady platform beds to sunny pool lounge chairs to cushioned sofas surrounding gas fire pits for evening. The resort was at full capacity but it never felt that way as there was no scurrying to "reserve" pool side chairs with a book lest they be unavailable later in the day. I applaud their effort to provide full amenities without any up charges. ABSOLUTELY, UNEQUIVOCALLY REFUSE the TIMESHARE PITCH UPON ARRIVAL and you'll never be bothered again. But, if you SUCCUMB to the discounts and incentives, plan to spend at least 4 hours in a high pressure sales pitch. Grand Mayan timeshare sales are the most aggressive in the industry! Walking distance into San Jose del Cabo, where mexican shops and gourmet restaurants abound. It's my second trip to the Cabo area and I would definitely return to this property.

This being my first time at Grand Mayan (transfer thru RCI) , I found this hotel to be clean but expensive. They do nickel and dime you on everything. You will also pay around 10% of value of dollars to turn into Pesos. At the time we went, the currency rate by bank was 11.88 Pesos to every dollar. Here it is 10.50 Pesos to every dollar.
The rooms are nice and clean and the cleaning people who come everyday do a great job. We tipped them well.
They will ask you to attend a "Presentation". They were not pushy about it but the group I was with decided to go because of the discounts they will give you on alot of things. (tours, adventures, etc...) They say it will be only 90 minutes but that 90 minutes does not start until after they have interviewed you and taken to a free breakfest buffet. That was 90 minutes alone before their official time begins. So, if you decide to waste a day just to get a little bit back in discounts, it is not worth it. They will pressure you at the presenatation though. After going thru all of this, I came to the conclusion that this resort is a training resort for both sales people and restaurants. To get a drink at the pool it will take awhile. They have only a couple waiters working the entire pool area which is really alot of real estate. Their happy hours are very confusing because it changes from place to place depending on time of day. Kind of silly really. Should be happy hour at all times. Restaurants are 3 star but you pay 4 and 5 star prices and I could tell of the inexperience of some servers. Not the best place to take your child but my 9 year old daughter made due and took alot of the activities on the beach (seperate from resort). There is horse back riding, para surfing (really cool), small plane rides. It is very close to San Jose shops in the square. If you venture out to eat, go to Pier 19, it was great. Personal service and great food and better prices.
I only have the Sol Melia in Puerto Vallarta to compare too and I wish we had stayed there instead. Alot cheaper and more fun for everyone. I will not be back.

First I have to say that I love Mexico, no matter what. That being said I have also stayed at the Grand Mayan in Nueva Vallarta and to be fair, that is what I'm comparing this hotel to. This hotel is nice but the pool is seriously cold and not much to do for the kids. We spent the bulk of our time at the beach, playing ping pong and braving the icy pool waters - pretty much made the best of it but it definitley mattered. The grounds are beautiful, as they are in all Grnad Mayans but this one is smaller than most. The service at the pool area and in the PeriQ restaurant were horrific. We waited and waited - over 70 minutes for hamburgers..the manager came over, apologized and left, with no consideration whatsoever to the overall experience. When we complained at the pool after waiting for an hour (and missing happy hour) the waiter had a major attitude. Strange for service in Mexico. Overall, my family will not be returning to this hotel. We booked through Registry Collection and told them of our experience. If you're open to other locations, I highly recommend the other Grand Mayans - the room layouts are unbeatable. If you're locked into Cabo, check elsewhere.

Would not stay at this resort again. Booked at this resort thinking it was a 5 Star assuming that the service, food and accomidations were up to par. As soon as you arrive they give you a wrist band you need to wear at all times that ID's you as being a guest at the hotel. Kind of cheesy, reminded me of a college/Vegas pool party. While checking in you'll be informed that you're not required to pay cash for anything and that everything is charged to your room number. What they fail to tell you is no matter what you charge to your room there will always be a 15% tip already included in everything you buy. Being a former bartender and my girlfriend a former waitress we thought that this was wierd because to assume a tip without excellent service defeats the purpose of a tip. Needless to say, service was slow, unorganized and average. BTW We usually tip a minimum of 20% based on service. I've had the good fortune to stay at some nice hotels in past, but this hotel nickel and dimes you to death. I felt more like just a room number than a valued customer when I checked out. Oh yeah, the jaccuzzi in the pool area is not heated and what looks like a jaccuzzi on all the balconies to the rooms is what they call a, "soak tub" meaning not heated to no water jets. The food was sub-standard based on the prices being charged. I can go on and on. You'd be better off booking somewhere else that knows what service and the value of being a top notch hotel is all about. For example, I booked at the hotel next door to this one a year ago with the initials of C.A. That was a good all around hotel. Now the good parts of this hotel. The design and location are nice. It's a quiet hotel, so not a lot of partying. Very close (walking distance) to Downtown San Jose Del Cabo. BTW spend your food money in town. Great restaurants!

Room Tip: Book next door at C.A. and feel valued.
