My husband and I just returned this evening from Secrets Marquis Los Cabos and can't recommend it highly enough.
There are lots of positive reviews on tripadvisor that helped us make the decision to choose this hotel. Specifically, people had commented on the exceptional service and they were not wrong. From the moment we checked in, to the moment we left, there were always an army of courteous staff happy to help. We did not get a sales pitch on check-in but on reading previous reviews, we declined the ‘tour’ and there was no push back at all. One watch out was the $200 hotel ‘credit’ we received as part of our expedia deal was not what we expected. You can use it on spa services (not makeup, hair or manicures), wine or the romantic beach dinner BUT only in $20 or $40 increments! Spa services are expensive, so even with a $40 discount, they would be $100. You can only use one of the $20 vouchers towards a bottle of wine, so we actually never used any of the credit at all. You can put some credit towards internet fees which may be useful for some, but we spent our time unplugged.
We stayed from 6 Dec - 10 Dec and the hotel could not have been at more than 50% capacity. (We heard 40% from other guests). Needless to say, there were plenty of sunbeds, the pools were never busy and cleverly designed (they run the entire length of the hotel front, have an infinity edge and overlook the beach) that I can't imagine, even at full capacity, you would struggle to get a bed or umbrella. A great bonus is that you didn't have to pre-book any of the restaurants, so non of those crazy lines at 10am in the lobby to secure your table for the evening. The only exception was if you wanted one of the tampanyaki tables at Spice, and that is only so they can set it up and book the chef in advance.
No children are allowed at the resort and the guests while we were there ranged from early 30 somethings to late 50 somethings. The atmosphere is serene and relaxing and absolutely stunning. They play soft, cool, lounge-type music at the pool which adds to the spa-like ambiance but it is certainly was not too loud or 'disco' while we stayed. The entertainment team have something going every hour but apart from the daily beach volleyball that was made up of an eclectic group of all ages, sizes and abilities, we didn’t join anything else. Again, they are not pushy and are super pleasant. Fernando (we think that’s his name) seemed to be the main entertainment guy and did a great job of making everyone feel welcome. There were ‘shows’ 2 of the 3 nights we stayed which were 30-45mins but well done. The Saturday ‘Mexican Night’ Mariachi band were the best.
The grounds, restaurants, rooms and pool areas are spotless. The rooms themselves all over look the ocean, have balconies with seats and a table and are very generously sized. We stayed in an Ocean View room and were extremely happy with the level of cleanliness, decor and space. Showers were large and had great water pressure and plenty of hot water. Each room also has a whirlpool tub. Coffee in a thermos is delivered with mini pastries and fruit to a secret 'cubby' by your door every day (around 6am) allowing those early-birds to enjoy a small breakfast on the patio while the sun rises. We rose around 8 everyday and the coffee was still warm. During the evening you can leave your doors open and listen the ocean waves - absolutely heaven. But close the net curtain or you'll wake up to a multitude of moths.
The nearest hotel is the Hilton which you can see towards the south end of the bay and is about a 10 min stroll down the beach. The beach north goes towards a number of privately owned houses but are also about 10-15 min walk. The waters around Secrets are not calm enough to swim in but you can swim and snorkel safely outside the Hilton. As a bonus, we saw whales out in the ocean directly in front of the hotel on 2 out of 3 days that were stayed.
We want to call out the amazing service that Adalberto and Ventura gave us (at the pool), Marco (who is pretty new, at Spices) and Manuel (who manages Vista Ballenas and Dos Mares). One evening, long after the business center had closed, we desperately needed to send an email. We told the front desk, who contacted someone to open the business center for us and they waited patiently until we had finished. Touches like that make all the difference. As we spent most of our time by the pool Adalberto and Ventura really did have the greatest effect on our stay. It’s like they live to keep you entertained, fed and watered all day. Unlike some all-inclusives, the alcoholic drinks here are poured generously and made with top shelf liquors. The poolside food menu is extensive, good, and covers everything from a Ceviche list to burgers. The food overall is pretty good for an all-inclusive. We didn’t have a bad experience anywhere, although we’d say the sashimi and maki rolls at Spices still need a bit of work. Their cooked food was way better.
My husband and I have previously stayed in Leading Hotels of the World properties, including the Royal Hideaway in the Riviera Maya and can honestly say this was comparable in beauty and service. For once, their online photos (while nice) don't do the property justice. We are already looking at returning next spring.
