Royal Solaris Los Cabos
Ranked #21 of 43 Hotels in San Jose del Cabo
Reviewed July 4, 2013

We decided on a trip to Mexico to celebrate our 31st Anniversary at the Last minute. We picked the Royal Solaris in Los Cabos as our destination, and we are glad we did. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel welcome and confortable by Laurent at the front desk. He checked us in quickly and efficiently while being friendly and attentive. Hearing that it was our anniversary, he automatically upgraded our room and made us feel like we definitively had made the right choice to stay at the Royal Solaris.
Once we started enjoying the amenities of the hotel, we were not disappointed either, we really enjoyed the adults only pool as it was quiet and relaxing. The food was good and plentiful, even if at times it was repetitive. Once again, where the royal Solaris shined, was in the quality of its staff, their friendliness and attention made up for any shortcommings in the food selections. I would really credit "Lucy" that always had a smile and made Awesome omelets, as well as Andres Gamez , Luis and Antonio whose dedication and attention to the people sitting in their section was really commendable. They were always happy eventhough they were putting in long shifts and always looking to fulfill your lunch or diner needs even before you asked.
Although we did not spend much time in our room, we did enjoy it. It was beautifully decorated and we had a large patio overlooking the pool and the ocean. We had a great time and would be glad to go back to the Royal Solaris in the future.
Thank you for a special time.

My family, friends, and I (a pretty big party) really enjoyed our stay here at Royal Solaris from June 26 to July 3. It's my second time back here. The last time was in 2005. I loved it even more now that I'm older, a teen. The staff was so amazingly nice. There was excellent service & the hotel was kept really clean. The environment was also very kid-friendly.

It was conveniently located around plazas, shops, and a church too. It was a short trip from the airport to the hotel. There were many activities offered. Some of our party went ziplining; it was super fun and safe. Others visited the arch and went snorkeling, but beware of jellyfish. The men in our group went fishing too. The hotel included a tennis & basketball court, so we frequently visited it. Also, we never went hungry because there were a number of restaurants, a snack bar & a swim up bar, which was really great. In addition, some days offered dinner on the beach, which was nice. We loved the Tiki night on the beach and Caribbean night by the pool.

The waves on the beach were sometimes rough, so swimming was not encouraged. But, walking on the beach and dipping our feet in the water was fine.

The best part of this vacation for me was the sports and entertainment team. They were really friendly, cool, funny, just super awesome. All sorts of activities were offered to all ages. My family had a blast with beach volleyball and poolside music, crafts and entertainment, along with karaoke. We also enjoyed the different shows. Thank you to Poncho, Ivan, Willis, Mikey, Donnie, Eric, Franki, and Jessica for a wonderful time.

I really can't wait until I can return (: I had a wonderful time at the hotel.

My fiancé and I took a 4 day vacation to the Royal Solaris. I proposed to her while we were there with the help of the Solaris staff. Kay Luna worked with me over email to arrange a private dinner on the beach and it was wonderful! The rest of the stay was great too. We were warmly greeted by the staff in the lobby every morning and the restaurant staff remembered us and was very attentive. I would definitely come back in the future.
The food at the buffet was good and there was an amazing cook making custom omelets every morning. The drinks were good as well and the staff was fast and attentive.
They have a great service that includes massages on the beach and the masseuses were exceptional.
The staff includes a personal touch in many ways including deserts brought to the room, drinks replenished in the refrigerator, etc. The evening events are fun to watch and are well orchestrated.

We just gotten back from that resort (June 23 - June 30).
Pros:
-well maintained buildings, rooms and landscaping
-some friendly staff

Cons:
-no comment cards given to guests
-not a four star
-very limited food choices
-empty pans are slow to be refilled, long lineups at mealtimes
-no managers to be ever seen
-only one security guard to control beach vendors and keep kids out of adult areas only
-weekend invasion by local families resulting in kids racing around hallways, banging on doors and creating excessive noise after 11PM - security could not be found and did not respond
-daily themes are all done by the same performers - no variation
-the Tikki dinner (you pay $45 extra) and the Caribbean dinner ($55 extra) are not worth the money - I've seen people go after their show to the regular buffet for food!
-repetitive food choices
-some waiters are hiding and texting instead of serving you

The management team from that hotel is not on the ball; they are just interested in selling memberships (also known as time shares). Since they have your personal details at check-in, you'll be greeted by a sales rep and pushed into buying a membership.
Have you ever been to an ALL INCLUSIVE were you have to pay extra for theme nites??? We traveled all over - this was a first; it reminded me of a cruise ship were they nickel and dime you after you checked in.
Family and kids friendly hotel??? - Well they have several porn channels on TV for your viewing - I guess free sex education for the children is included

Summery:
If you love being around hundreds of kids and activities only or mainly catered to them - well then this hotel is for you; we will NEVER return to this resort
Pay a bit extra and go to a different place

Room Tip: Hard to say when kids are racing through the entire building and playing in the elevators

We just returned from a 6 night stay at the Solaris.

Based on the reviews I was expecting an amazing service but this wasn't the case. The minute you walk iyou go to a desk with this salesperson who tries to get you hooked on attending the timeshare talk by offering you some discounts on tours/excursions. We kindly declined and felt their attitude towards us immediately changed! Same goes for all waiters, tip them every single time or they completely ignore you, totally, 100%.

Food was TERRIBLE. First of all, the choices are VERY limited. Breakfast is the worst of all the meals. So little variety. Compared to other all-inclusive places we've stayed at the food was pathetic. Not even the fruit seemed fresh. I was expecting a nice variety of tropical fruit but they only had 3 or 4 bowls consisting of watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew, and pineapple. If you want a banana you have to buy it outside of the resort because the only bananas they have are mixed with some sort of yogurt or cream. Yes, that pathetic. But what really was the worst part of the meals were the dishes (the actual plates, cups, etc). All dirty. If you run your finger through them you'll see what I mean. We always saw stuck on food on them. Yuck! It was really disgusting, to be honest. We ended up eating out a lot which defeats the purpose of an all-inclusive. At lunch, expect a reinvented version of what you had for dinner the night before made with the leftovers, which would be okay if the food wasn't sitting out there for hours while dinner was served. I could go on and on about the food but I guess you get the idea.

Another thing that caught our attention is that they are constantly running out of stuff. If you ask for a beer they will give you Tecate Light. We then learned that they also had Regular Tecate but they didn't always have it in stock. We then learned they serve a darker beer "Indio" but again, they were out of it on some days. One morning we wanted some water to take with us because we were going out and since the lobby bar wasn't open yet they said we could get water at the front desk. We went and asked and guess what? Yep, they were out of water there. It might seem like a little thing to be complaining about but it does get annoying! One day after a long day out we wanted a super cold beer from the mini bar in our room and they didn't re-stock it that day. We called the front desk and they said they were going to take care of it but they didn't. 2 hours later I had to call again.

The bartender at the main lobby bar wasn't the friendliest. We felt he got annoyed whenever we asked for something.

The hotel is fairly clean and AC at the rooms works great. Rooms are outdated and they don't have flat screen TVs but this is really Ok with us.

The entertainment at night was average. We have definitely seen better. The only bar open at night is the main lobby one which kind of sucks because they make everyone be at that same area every night.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for but even in this price range, I would definitely look for a different hotel.

We enjoyed our stay at the Royal Solaris. The price was fair, the food and entertainment was great. We would consider returning here for short stays (4 -5 days). Other guests we spoke with felt the same way. Be aware that after you check in, the concierge (aka ‘time share vendor’ or ‘vacation club representative’) will try to talk to you about their ‘money-saving’ offers. You need to be prepared to say ‘no’ many times before they will let you go on your way.

CHECK-IN. Check-in was slow. Even though there were 3 people behind the counter helping the few guests who were standing in line it seemed to take forever for them to get to us. While we waited in line a lady approached us with what looked like a check-in form. She told us to fill it out and give it back to her after we were finished checking-in at the front desk. It didn’t feel right so I didn’t fill it out. I figured that if they were with the hotel they would not need my information a second time. After we finished getting checked in, the concierge (aka ‘time share vendor’ or ‘vacation club representative’) was waiting to talk to us. We tried to be nice and let him know that all we wanted was to get to our room. He persisted in telling us about their ‘money-saving’ offers –including vacation ownership. We had to tell the man ‘no’ many times before he let us go on our way. Even though I read many reviews about the hotel not one mentioned this so we were caught off guard. After all my travels to vacation destinations in Mexico, I was ready for the onslaught by time-share drones at the airport, but I never expected it after check in at the hotel.

ROOM. Our room was clean and spacious. We specifically asked if our room had a safe in it. We were told there was but when we arrived we found that the lock was missing. We called the front desk and they told me there was an extra charge ($1/day rental fee) to use it. The next time we went downstairs we rented the lock. It worked great for the time we were there. It would have been nice to know in advance because we would have gotten it at check in. The room had a coffee maker although we never used it because we always travel with a French Press and our own coffee grounds. This time I forgot to bring powdered cream so I used what was in the room. If you like cream in your coffee you better bring your own because the packets they provide across the property (in room and at restaurants) is a very low grade and does not taste good. The room also had a refrigerator -with soft drinks, beer and water. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that we could consume the drinks inside without incurring any extra charges. Our room faced the hotel entry and parking lot. It was very quiet and we had a very large balcony. We didn’t care about upgrading to get a nice view because we didn’t plan on spending much time in the room.

POOL. The pool was awesome! Our children really loved swimming up to the bar and ordering virgin drinks –that was the highlight for them.

BEACH. The beach is directly in front of the property. The hotel has plenty of Palapas (shade structures) with lounge chairs on the sand. We never had difficulties getting a spot. It is a short walk on the sand to the water’s edge. There must always be dangerous swimming conditions because there are permanent signs indicating potential dangers (not only in front of this hotel but others as well). One day the shore-break was so dangerous that a security person would not allow us to get close to the water –not even to wet our feet. On the last day of our stay the wave action was smaller so we were able to get in the water up to our knees. Bottom line: If you want to stay at a resort where you can swim in the ocean and play in the waves you should call the hotel directly and ask the front desk what the water conditions are before booking. Due to the permanent signs everywhere on the beach I suspect this is not a place you will want to stay if going into the ocean is a high priority for you.

DINING. We never went hungry! We spent most of our time at the pool area playing in the water. There was a snack bar that always had fresh fruit, vegetables, as well as the typical not-so-healthy options as well (hot dogs, french fries, chicken fingers). When we wanted something more substantial there were 2 other restaurants that were open most of the day. They had a wonderful assortment of food available with no waiting in lines. There is a restaurant that is open for dinner only. You must make reservations to eat there. If you want to give it a try you need to call at 9 am. We never went because we enjoyed the food at the regular restaurants.

ENTERTAINMENT. We spent most of our time by the pool playing in the water. Throughout the day there were an assortment of activities and games led by the hotel staff. They were very friendly and spoke English as well as Spanish. Everything they did was translated so everyone could participate. We really enjoyed getting to know the crew. They were all so friendly! We went to one of the nightly shows the property offers and the same crew that led us in the pool activities were in the show.

LOCATION. We didn’t love the location of the property because there wasn’t any night-life close by (walking distance). We would consider returning here for short stays (4 -5 days). If we wanted to stay longer we would find another location closer to the Marina (25 minutes away) because there was not a lot to do off-property.

Room Tip: If you want to use the in-room safe you have to rent the lock ($1/day). Take care of that at check...
