No frills but GREAT seafood. Recommended by our taxi driver and locals we met at the beach! Big portions so share the meals so you can try more items. We had their empanadas (fish, smoked marlin and shrimp), shrimp ceviche, stuffed shrimp and shrimp cilantro. Chased it down with the coldest beer and it was great. Loved the soup broth they brought to you as an "amuse bouche"… Wish we would have returned - lots more on the menu to explore. Tip: the salsa does not look hot but it BURNS as it goes down - make sure you have lots of salty chips on hand. Enjoyed the live music and the no nonsense decor… the food is the main reason you go (and keep going!). We were smart and ordered an extra ceviche to go - enjoyed the next two days at our condo!

Our guys went out on a chartered panga (sport fishing boat) and successfully caught a rooster fish and a mahi mahi. We asked the Cabol Azul Resort staff for the name of a good restaurant who would cook our fresh catch. The staff recommended the "family style" El Toro Guero in downtown San Jose Del Cabo.

Dress casually because the restaurant is truly "family style". But don't let the rustic atmosphere fool you. This place has some scrumptious Mexican fare! Our server was Saul (pronounced; Sahhh-ool) He spoke impeccably good English and was very helpful. He told us that most of the restaurant staff does NOT speak English and some American patrons become annoyed by that. To that I said, "Estamos in Mexico. Hablamos Espanol."

Our party of eleven had ideas how we wanted to have the fresh fish prepared. Some in our group definitely wanted ceviche. Saul suggested that we leave the preparation to them. He assured us that we would not be disappointed.

For a nominal amount per person (under $15 USD), they prepared the fish we brought in a cooler. Our meals included the cooked fish, tostadas, tortillas, mashed potatoes, rice and toasted bread. First came the rooster fish, it was finely chopped and served as a ceviche-- raw fish marinated in lime juice with chopped tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeno and cucumber. Although I had never had ceviche, I thought It was refreshing and quite tasty. Our friends who were craving ceviche couldn't believe how delicious the ceviche was!! At this point we were pretty happy.

Saul then returned with two terracotta ovens which held platters covered in foil shaped as fish. (See attached pictures.) The platters contained panko crusted mahi mahi and mahi mahi with a Santa Clara topping. Both were delicious! The toasted bread was the only thing we didn't like! (That's okay because Mexico isn't known for their bread.)

The staff was kind enough to call for our taxi as our meal was winding down. We left by shaking hands with our new amigo, Saul. We told him that he was right. We left the cooking to them and we were NOT disappointed.

El Toro Guero-- Not fancy but muy bien!

A good choice for seafood, with shrimp done many ways. Outdoor dining on simple tables, but very well prepared menu and reasonable wine list. We enjoyed the shrimp soup in particular.

If you want to try a Mexican Sea Food place try El Toro Guero....The seafood is very good. It is NOT fancy place, but the prices are quite good for the quality of the food. Try the Shrimp Cocktails.

I must say that if you see the place you will probably think twice before visiting but I assure the seafood is very good.
I have been there 4 times already and every time I try something different and I liked everything I have tried so far.
It is NOT fancy at all!
But if you like seafood you must try this. It is the real thing.
