We stayed at the Barcelo for 1 night and truly loved the property. The front desk staff was very helpful and courteous. Our room had a balcony with a beautiful view of the beach, ocean and the pool area. The grounds are well maintained. It is a smaller property than most All Inclusive resorts in Mexico with 1 buffet restaurant, a couple of bars and 3 restaurants. The sky bar is awesome for great views and a nice relaxing drink. We had dinner at La Gondola the Italian restaurant. The food and service here was not that great so did not meet our expectations. The breakfast and lunch buffets at Las Olas are ok but the location and view is really good.

The beach gets quite hot and with no cabanas or lack of trees makes for a 'hot beach day'.
The hotel is only 10-15 mins from the airport and easy to get to. The water is a bit choppy.

A good stay overall. Would recommend it for anyone that wants a smaller, cozy AI facility.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor building overlooking the pool area closer to the beach.

We've purchased a groupon and booked our trip for end of October. However, we were in San Jose Cabo for a week and stopped in to look at the accommodations. The front desk staff were cool and indifferent. We asked to take a look at the resort and for information. They confirmed our reservation and said we could only look out from the entry way and were not able to look around the grounds. We were also told that our room because it was purchased through groupon will face the construction. If we had visited the resort prior to purchasing the groupon we would have never made the purchase.

This is the second time for are family at Hola grand faro. It was fantastic the first time as good or better the second time. Do not understand some of the reviews that i have read about the resort
just don't sound like the same place we just came from in march.

We had new family members with us this time , they were just as amazed as we were our first time. Which was very nice after all the things we told them about the resort.

I would like to acknowledge two very special people Lucio and Odette at the breakfest buffet , just wonderful people.

The all inclusive package is the only way to go ,food and drinks were great.

Every one complains about the big pool being so cold, are whole group (14)
found it refreshing.if you want to take a bath go to your room.

We will return , hopefully soon.

Sincerely,

Raymond Thompson and family.

Room Tip: We have always been on the east side, second floor, ocean view, Just wonderfull.

We stayed here from March 22 to 29th, 2014. I have stayed here before, for NY 2012. I noticed a definite improvement since my first visit.

When I booked the Barcelo, I thought I was booking at the Hyatt Ziva up the road. I accidentally booked the same hotel as I had two years ago and I did not realize it until the evening before departure. I was a little unsettled after I realized my error…. but I was pleasantly surprised.

We were happy with the option of walking into San Jose (20 min) or a 10 peso bus ride (with the locals). I also loved the fact that we could take a bus to Cabo San Lucas for 35 pesos. From the bus stop you can easily find your way down the marina and catch a boat out to the arch or dine at The Office.

The beach in San Jose is perfect for beach walking but not for swimming. The waves are powerful and it's not worth the risk. My favourite feature of this resort is the location of the infinity pool. You have an unobstructed view of the ocean right from the pool. Unfortunately the pool is not an "Adults Only" pool….. which would make it even more attractive.

There was never a time where we (two ladies) felt unsafe walking in either town or along the water. We actually found people extremely helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: If you are ocean front, ask for a higher floor. The breakfast restaurant is below and the employees...

We recently stayed her for 6 nights at the end of March! I really could only say one thing that really was not up to par. When we checked in we had a room that had two beds in it and we paid for a room with a king size bed. Like I said not a huge deal at all. The service in the buffets was great and we met some very nice people while there and had a great time! Maybe the pool side service could be a little better but really like I said nothing major at all. LUCIO at breakfast seriously made this place feel like home l can say that LUCIO made our vacation unbelievable. We honestly miss him we looked forward to breakfast every morning just to see him! I wish he was there for lunch and dinner as well!!! We will go back to this resort without a question and one more little thing again maybe the wifi could be better or have a better package offered. But hey it's supposed to be vacation so we honestly didn't mind leaving our phones in the room. Lucio we miss you!!!!! I really hope you are still there when we come back next year!!!

Tucked in at the bottom of the Baja Penninsula that runs south from San Diego, Los Cabos is a different sort of Mexico, where it’s relatively safe to walk off of your resort. The peninsula keeps it somewhat isolated from the Pacific coast and Mayan Rivera, where recent troubles have surfaced.

We visited the Barcelo Grand Faro in Los Cabos in mid-March and offer a few observations. Firstly, this is not the Barcelo many were expecting when they booked. Some we met thought they were returning to the nearby five-star Barcelo, but it’s now the Hyatt Ziva, an exquisite property which acquired from Barcelo. My travel contacts tell me that Barcelo leased the former Los Olas Grand Faro a few doors up the beach while they build their new resort next door to it. (If you Google Earth the site, it still appears as a vacant lot, but it isn’t.)

Which brings me to my next observation. The rooms and balconies at the Grand Faro angle nicely toward the water, and the resort is a pleasant 1980s art-deco style with rounded corners etc. However, those on the outside west wing also face a construction site that is active six days per week. The front desk attempted to put us into one of those rooms, until I pointed out that we’d paid (actually with air miles) for an ocean view room, and this was nowhere near the view we’d expected. Happily resettled to a room facing the pool and beach areas on the inside of the resort, you simply do not hear the construction activities for the most part.

Observation number three: While the ambience is peaceful, and the service okay from my point of view, this place is not up to the standard many expect from Barcelo. Again, they are only leasing the property and likely are working with the existing staff and processes. One procedure I’d like to see changed is the practice of rinsing drink glasses behind the bar, usually in cold water with no detergent. Not a good practice in a place like Mexico. I recommend you bring a stack of dollar store cups with you and have your beverages poured into them.

We had no issues with the food, though you’re not likely to read about it in the pages of Epicure. The food at the buffets is fresh and hot, and they varied the theme from latin to Asian and Italian. And there are always beef, chicken and seafood to be fresh-cooked to your preference. There are also a Mexican and Italian sit-down restaurants that you can book at the main desk.

We took a snorkeling excursion that also took us whale watching enroute, followed by shopping in Cabo San Lucas, the popular spot for celebrities. It’s about 20 minutes by car from the resort. You might also enjoy a 20-minute walk up to a pretty town, San Jose Del Cabo for shopping and dining. If you have kids, there’s swimming with the dolphins. Swimming at the resort is best left in one of their multiple pools because of the rip-tide on the beach. Still you’ll see a few idiots, filled with bravado at the pool bar, wander down to the beach for a swim each day. Obey the danger flags on the beach.

Another observation: beware of time-share sales reps. We encountered our first one, literally as we walked out of Mexican customs. He was posing as our tour rep, implying that we should wait with him until the others cleared customs. Then he began extolling the virtues of time-share units. We managed to extricate ourselves and left the room that is kept-out-of-bounds to tour agents meeting arriving tour guests. Unless you’re actively looking for time-share units, my advice is to politely say “no thank you” and keep moving without making eye contact. It’s not worth a half-day or more of lost vacation. Ironically, if you do the math, buying a time share room in a resort for several thousand dollars, then paying $150 or more per day during your time share per week for all-inclusive privileges, topped off by air fare, is likely much more expensive on an annual basis than booking a competitively priced package to the same resort. I talked to a couple of people who learned that lesson the hard way.
Sales reps are also there to sell you excursion tours at the airport, and off of the resort. They will point out that booking with them will save you a lot of money compared to booking at the resort itself. But beware that off-resort tours require you to show up at the tour operator’s location to embark, while on-resort tours have pick-up and drop-off built in. When you consider that a taxi ride to Cabo San Lucas can cost $30 each way, your savings may not be there.

Having said all of this I would recommend Barcelo Grand Faro if you can get it on a value-priced basis. It has enough going for as a good vacation, and staff will respond if you want some extra attention to an issue with your room, including a better view. It’s always best to walk in with your eyes wide open.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing west in #3 wing. They currently face a construction site

Food was average to good. Servers in the restaurants and by the pool were wonderful and very friendly. But SERIOUSLY short handed. Rooms were nice but cleaning inconsistent as well as stocking the fridge. Everyday either the face cloths or bath mat were not left. Sometimes the room wasn't cleaned until 5 in the afternoon. Still, we had a great time.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool are noisier.
