“Grand time at Hola Grand Faro”
Reviewed November 16, 2013

My husband and I stayed here in Aug., 2013. We were so impressed we have booked our daughter's wedding in April. We thought the food was incredible, especially in the two specialty restaurants. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, and never any shortage of drinks (we tipped an average of $1 per drink.). The setting, grounds, pools, and common areas were all gorgeous. The little town of San Jose is very quaint with lots of hospitality. The room was o.k., and bed not so comfy. However, I've been informed they're going through a renovation and one recent review said one tower was closed for reno's, so hoping that will improve by our stay. The wedding coordinator said construction will be done by Feb. Apart from the rooms being slightly shabby (which sounds like it's improving,) I'd definitely recommend this resort!

This resort was great! The staff was absolutely fantastic! I need to mention Edith, Christian, Jose, Ana, Cindy and the lovely bartender who served us our first night. (I'm so sorry I can't remember your name). Let's face it though, all the barstaff, waiters/waitresses, hosts/hostesses were fantastic!

Our room was always clean! I did notice that the housekeepers had a bit of a strange schedule. The first day they came around 4:00pm and other days they would be there in the mornings, before 11:00am. This really had no effect on us at all, as we spent little to no time in our rooms. We were WAY too busy soaking up the sun by the pool or off on some adventure. As I previously stated, our room was always clean and that to me was what was most important!

The buffets were good! They changed the theme up every night and it was tasty! By the 7th night, however we decided to check out one of the pubs nearby. We decided to go to one of the a la carte restaurants and decided on the Mexican one, seeing as we were in Mexico and all. My boyfriend and friend absolutely loved their meal, they had the tuna and the stuffed chicken breast. Our other friend and I had the chicken fajitas which weren't really anything to get dressed up for.. I wasn't head over heels for the food at this resort and was mostly discouraged by the ketchup, which we figured was catsup instead. It's a super minor detail and it's easy enough to avoid though!

We had requested a king size bed and paid extra for an ocean-view room. Upon arrival, we were given two single beds and an ocean-view room. This was alright for the first day and we did go and talk to the front desk. We were told that the only king size bed available was a garden view. Not wanting to give up our view, we mentioned that we would wait until one became available. I was really confused, since the resort really wasn't busy at all and even though the one side was closed for renos, I would have thought there would have been more king size beds? Anyway, we ended up not bothering to get a room with a king size bed as the singles ended up working just fine (After all, it's a vacation and we sleep in the same bed enough as it is -Haha).

Overall, this was a great place to stay. We had tons of fun and really enjoyed ourselves! If you're looking for a nice, quiet resort San Jose del Cabo is the place to be! And the Hola Grand Faro is certainly worth looking into! (Did I mention they have a big tower bar?)

We just returned from a 10 day trip with our family of 12 - 8 adults and 4 children - Our assessment would be this should be rated a 3 star - Most of us suffered from "Montezumas Revenge" for 3-4 days - Met several other guests with the same complaint - Beds were like planks to sleep on - Mold in the shower - Most meals were o'k, not impressed watching birds entering the beach buffet and landing on tables, pecking at the packaged jams etc. as well as having to clean droppings off the seats occasionally - Pool snack bar well maintained and good food - Maid service was good, but a little inconsistent re: stocking the fridge (and yes we always tip) - Staff generally, were friendly and tried to please - My son and his wife requested a room overlooking the pool (same floor) as they have 2 young children and and were charged $200 to have an identical room so they could watch their kids in the baby pool - My daughter and husband also requested a room with a king bed (as opposed to 2 doubles) and they tried to charge her $300 extra, she confronted them with what our son had been charged and they reduced it to $200 - Overall after vacationing in Mexico annually for the last 25 years, we would rate this experience at the bottom of our list - Not a lot to complain about, but definitely nothing to rave about either - Just stating the facts, as we found the resort.

I have been using this hotel several time a year for the last 5 years about 25 stays in total. This time around , I could not help but notice multiple improvement. The landscaping has been reworked, night activities are great and the service is still as good. While not the most luxurious hotel, it doe display lots of pride and it offer tremendous value. My only critique is that wireless internet is not consistent from one room to another.

Room Tip: Ask for pool side room if possible

This hotel was a huge disappointment. We were a group of 30 and had gone for a special occasion . Whenever we asked if we could get a seating in the restaurants for a large group they would only allow us 20 people at a time. The staff are extremely overworked and there seems to be no organized job function in the restaurants. Everyone runs around like they don't know what to do next. We were all sick from the food by day 2 of our stay and the food is all the same only with different names on different nights. The beds are hard and if you are going for a romantic vacation don't expect to sleep together unless you are comfortable in a full size (smaller than double) bed or are willing to pay an extra 20-60 dollars a night extra for a king size bed. The walls are paper thin so you can hear everything going on in the room next door. And don't expect to get a complete room clean every day either. It is pretty hit and miss. one day we would get water the next day beer and the next day face clothes and they might even change the sheets one day. the location is great however there is construction going on all around them. The beach was as expected. the pools were too cold to spend any amount of time in them. after a half an hour of being in the pool we were shivering and it was hot outside. we were tipping generously hoping that this would help with drink service but it only seemed to slow it down. they say" no tippy no sippy" This should not be the case! Overall for an all inclusive vacation it was very disappointing. defiantly not getting your moneys worth.

Dear Guest

Your feedback is really valuable as it help us to find areas where we need to work hard to improve every day.

We will strengthen the supervision in the restaurants since the conduct that you commented of our waiters is certainly not typical of the level of quality we usually deliver to our guest. As well we verify the cooking process with our chef.

I would like to offer my apologies for not succeeding your expectations during your stay with us. Be sure we will take care each detail that you mentioned.

We hope you give us another opportunity to better serve you.

We had a horrible experience next door and paid extra to go here. When we arrived the food was amazing and service was excellent. Would recommend this to anyone. It's very comparable in my eyes to a 5 star hotel but at a cheaper rate. The food quality was awesome. Also the location is a nice little walk away to the mega store, mc Donald's, Starbucks.

Third time I stayed here. Chose this place for the rates. Couldn't make it through the week here. The food was bad, the service was lousy, the gym was lousy, the bed was hard, the booze was nasty.

There were a couple of meals where I got through three courses of the buffet without a waiter/waitress even coming within hailing distance of the table - so I never did get a drink. Lines at the bars were 6 or seven people deep. The booze was rot-gut, and the bar areas were not clean.
