Casa del Mar Golf Resort & Spa

Reviewed January 28, 2006

Just returned from a week a Casa del Mar located in the corridor between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. We did enjoy the location, and after a few days, rented a car (highly recommend car rental for this area). This hotel is small boutique (31 suites and 26 rooms) and our one bedroom suite was located in the main building. The grounds are beautiful, with gardens and 6 pools and whirlpools. We were a little disappointed with the whirlpool tub in our room which we expected to be a two person tub (not) with a view of the ocean/grounds (also not). We thought the suites in the other hotel building would have larger tubs with views, but spoke with some other guests who told us that was not the case. So we were very happy with our location in the main building and the overall size of the suite. Very generous - probably about 800 sqft with balcony. The facilities were very clean!! We especially enjoyed the adults only beach club with the beach, pool with swim up bar, whirlpool, patio restaurant, bar and lounge chairs at pool and on beach. Excellent service to the point of their insisting on moving the beach umbrellas all the time. No children allowed although there are adequate facilities for families including the large, heated infinity pool with swim up bar.

Hotel restaurant was typically expensive for breakfast and lunch, but convenient and good quality. Perhaps some better, more reasonable choices for breakfast and lunch would be Lattitude 22 on the Corridor (great sports bar & restaurant- a true local place), The Pancake House in San Jose, French Riveria in San Jose (we didn't try the one in San Lucas, but the croissants and pastries are unbelieveably great!!) Don't miss Mi Cocina in San Jose at Casa di Natalie for dinner. THE BEST!! The Restaurant at Las Ventanas was somewhat underwhelming. Although the stool for my purse and the black napkin to match my dress was impressive, the food was good but not outstanding.

The ocean was very cold, and unsuitable for swimming (strong currents and undertow) but beautiful to see and hear. I did get a kick out of the ocean sound machine in the room!!!

For our 35th anniversary we went to Casa Del Mar in Cabos. It turned out to be the best hotel and vacation we had ever had. When we arrived we were upgraded to a suite. It was bigger than some apartments I have lived in when single. We hit the beach and had Shrimp Tacos at the Beach Club Grill that were to "die for". Then there was the bottle of champagne and chocolate -covered strawberries waiting in our suite when we got back from the beach.Members of the staff always remembered your name and the service was excellent from drinks on the beach to making reservations for us in town. They even took me on a golf cart one day to another hotel boutique, waited for me to shop, then brought me back. When we left we felt like we knew everyone personally and I will never forget the view from our room or going to sleep each night to the sounds of the surf from the Sea of Cortez. It was never crowded at the hotel and we never had to wait for a table or a lounge on the beach. On some nights they serve dinner on the beach. It was the most romantic meal we had there. We decided that was our anniversay dinner. When we left the staff asked us to please come back again and that is just what we have decided to do. Can't wait to go back for our 36th anniversary this Spring.

We just returned from our second trip to Los Cabos and our first stay at CDM. See our first review [----------]).

A few words about Los Cabos:

We like the area very much. The climate is absolutely spectacular and is always comfortable during the day at this time of the year (low 80's) and pleasantly cool in the evening (high 60's- low 70's). The humidity is very low and you never need air conditioning. This is a major difference between Los Cabos area and many of the Carribbean islands that we have previously visited over the years. Also, a unique combination of dessert-like landscape combined with California-like atmosphere and Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez complete the picture.

Now specifically about Casa Del Mar:
As previously noted in many reviews, the setting itself is quite spectacular. The main building looks like a typical Mexican hacienda surrounded by beautiful landscaping with tons of mature palm trees and tropical greeneries. The grounds are kept immaculate. Location of the main pool is quite nice, although the tile shows some wear and tear. The lounge chairs by the pool most definetely require updating. If the hotel wants to claim to be a 5-star property, the lounge chairs definetely need to be replaced. The room itself (we had a suite) is really large according to even American standards. Beautiful living room with a balcony, bedroom with a very comfortable high-end mattress and marble all around. Huge area for storage (essentially a large walk in closet between bedroom and bathroom). Everything is kept nice and clean with twice a day cleaning service. But once again, you see some minor cracks and some less expensive appliances. If you are looking for ultra-luxurious top notch room, then this is not it. But, if you can overlook those minor details, you will enjoy a big comfortable room with beautiful view of the ocean.
The property itself is somewhat spread-out but it is never a problem to get around if you dont want to walk because the hotel provides prompt golf cart transportation service.
The service: We found the service at CDM much more superior than at Marquis. All our requests (room service, luggage, reservations, etc.) were answered very promptly without any issues with language barriers.
The SPA: That area definetely needs great improvement. If you are going to CDM to enjoy sauna, steam, etc. then this is not the place. This is definetely one area where Marquis is much better than CDM.

Overall, if you are looking for tranquil, relaxing, upscale 4.5 star property in a nice location, CDM might be your choice.

In conclusion, a few words about area restaurants:
Las Ventanas- still the greatest and the best restaurants. Ceviche bar is to die for with 6 different types of ceviches.

Tropicana- in San Jose Del Cabo, simple, inexpensive great food.

La Dolce Vita- San Jose Del Cabo, if you miss homestyle nice Italian cooking, definetely stop by. Their pizza is indistinguishable from many places in Italy.

La Panga- San Jose Del Cabo, expensive, overrated poor quality food.

Office- Cabo San Lucas, great place for lunch , very casual but food is great. We would reccommend it on the way to the shopping Mall and Marina.

I hope this review will help ...enjoy

We just returned from five days at Casa Del Mar resort (hotel, not condos) for a pre-holiday holiday with our two young sons. The hotel, and especially the grounds, were beautiful. The hotel and attached condos are located on a most beautiful, long strip of beach half way between San Jose Del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. The upside: wonderful, spacious grounds and room (pay the extra for a suite, it's worth it). Pools to swim in galore, so many so you can have a pool to yourself on most occassions. Fabulous dinner/grill restaurant on the beach. Very nice staff. Downside: hotel service is spotty at times. We had to make up to three requests for simple room service orders, and room service wasn't open round the clock. Seemed like we could rarely order food for our babies at the times they normally eat meals. It also seemed as though management planned for appropriate service staff over the Christmas holiday, but before December 23 they just weren't prepared for guests. Also, for the cost of the rooms ($500 a night), I expected more updates to the room decor. However clean the rooms were, the cost of the resort should reflect in the furnishings, beddings and linens. All in all, I'd return in the future if the hotel promoted new decor and emphasis on food and food service. If not, maybe I'd spend the extra money and return to the Palmilla.

We has a wonderful stay. The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful and most everyone seemed to speak great English, which was a big help for us. Our quiet suite had a great balcony overlooking the pools, the richly colored bouginvella (sp?) and the ocean. As others have mentioned, the dinner on the beach is not to be missed!

In need of some serious rejuvenating, we rented a condo through letscabo. Our entire stay from being picked up at the airport to groceries waiting for us to staff to prepare our meal requests to equisite furnishings to the pools and grounds and spa could not have been better. My husband and I take frequent get aways and we both agreed Casa Del Mar Condos (La Perla 102) was the best.

A perfect vacation. From the moment we arrived at this small luxury hotel to the end when we had to leave we had a wonderful time at CDM and we can highly recommend this hotel to everybody who looks for tranquility and some time to relax during his vacation in Cabo.
We ate in the hotel and found every food item delicious. Although El Tapanco and the Mesquite Grill (at the beach) are not cheap they both are worth their money (100 - 150 USD for a couple with wine). We also liked the breakfast items especially the mexican ones. Lunch was simple and cheap but very good. The drinks were a bit pricey.
They have a lot of pools on premises but we only used the main pool in front of the haciendy style building and the adult pool right at the beach.
We had a regular room in the hacienda building which we liked very much. There was maid service twice a day and everything was clean and nicely decorated with flowers.
I wish everybody that you can enjoy your stay there as much as we did.
