“Tropicana -- very nice, but beware of remodel project”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2005

We stayed at The Tropicana for three nights in September, 2005. The grounds and the pool were stunningly beautiful; the room was clean and nice, but maybe kinda bland. The staff were very friendly to us, and the poolboy Carlos was totally hot :-)

The location is convenient, right on the main drag in San Jose. We loved being in town where we could walk to the local bars and restaurants, instead of being trapped in the big corporate hotels on the beach. San Jose is really cute; it's Mexican enough to feel like you're in a foreign country, but touristy enough to feel comfortable if you don't speak Spanish. For the adventurous, the Mexican bus to Cabo San Lucas is only 18 pesos.

The walk from Tropicana straight down to the ocean is about 20 minutes. It's a great place to stroll in the surf and to watch the sunset, but not to swim. You have to drive or cab it over to the swimming areas if that's your thing. There is an asphalt path along the estuary, right behind the Tropicana, that you can follow all the way to the ocean if you don't want to walk on the street.

My one complaint was the noise at the hotel. They had a demolition/remodel project going on behind the restaurant, so we were bombarded with jackhammer noise all day long, even on the weekend. When you make a reservation, ask if the project is complete.

Otherwise, I totally recommend the Tropicana!

A quaint unpretensive hotel,Tropicana is located right on the main street in San Jose del Cabo, hidden from street view and behind a small restaunt cafe.
Everything about the hotel is idyllic and a true eden-like site.Hotel rooms are situated around the quadrangle court yard with the blue tiled pool inthe center.Hammaocks, lounge chairs and tropical fruit trees line the sides of the swimming pool.A large white gilded cage against one wall also house singing birds. The aviary is fully stocked with colorful songters that is a real treat to patio patrons.
Hotel rooms are decorated in Spanish colonial style, heavy wooden beds with modern comfortable bedding ensure a good nights sleep, bathroom sinks are gorgeous sidplaying handpainted ceramic bowls. Cable TV is also a pleasant room surprise in a town that hasnt changed much since the 1850's.A two hundred+ yr old cathedral has been refurbished for its ancient anniversary.Nearby the internet cafe and post office are on hand for correspondance. The main street outside has wire electricity that stretches all the way to the pounding surf of the ocean where horses await a rider in the twilight. The sones of a local taverna play into the balmy night lull the vistor to sleep.Paradise is not far.

Wow, some serious service issues. While the hotel staff were friendly, they were not helpful. Among numerous problems, our room wasn't ready upon arrival and they promised many things but did not follow on any. The rooms were clean, the hotel has a beautiful setting and the food at the restaurant was fabulous.

I have stayed at the Tropican for the last 7 years before going down to Hacienda Del Mar for a week. The hotel is clean, convenient and centrally located. We go the same week every year, near the end of March and there is always a big street celebration going on, so it makes it more entertaining. The shops around the hotel are great! The people are very friendly and the staff is great. The breakfast is a bit scant, served by the pool, and you need to get up early to get the chocolate croissants, but it's still a nice touch. There are parrots and birds in the courtyard (though there used to be many more) and they are covered at night, so there is no noise. Stay at the Tropicana, you won't be disappointed.

Tropicana Inn was immaculate. The rooms were adequate. Every room opened onto the courtyard/pool area. The plants were beautfiul and in abundance. The grounds were well kept and so was the pool. The continental breakfast was ok; coffee, fruit, pastries, juice and little boxes of cereal. The resturant was right in the front and the city was steps away. It could get a little loud at night on the weekends as there's live music(good!) but otherwise it is quiet and very peaceful. There are 40 rooms and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I felt like I was in Mexico not a little city(resort wise).

We stayed at the Tropicana for 4 nights in January '05. We loved it! If you are more of an independent traveler and like staying at unique hotels instead of the big chains (of which there are lots in Los Cabos), than this is the place for you! The staff was friendly and helpful. The thing though that I liked the best about the inn was the courtyard. Every room opens up onto the courtyard, and it's very lush and has a pool (was not heated when we were there). The proximity to everything in San Jose del Cabo is also a huge plus - you can walk to all the restaurants and shops and don't need a car if you don't want one. I highly recommend visiting the restaurant that is part of the hotel. Eat out front on the sidewalk, in the large dining room, or in the bar area. The food was good (and more reasonable than other restaurants around town), and everyday they had happy hour with 2-for-1 margaritas. By the end of our stay, everyone recognized us at the hotel and restaurant and went out of their way to help us.
