We decided to go to Cabo for March break and picked the upscale Riu Palace as compared to the Riu Sante next door. We arrived to a mix up where we did not get the room we had reserved. We ended up in an arguement over what we had reserved with the manager. In the end they gave us an ocean view room with a cot as there were three of us in the room and only 1 bed. ( we had reserved 2 beds) It wasn't the best situation as the room was small for a cot but we made due as the view was amazing.
After the initial issue we ended up happy overall as the service from the staff on site was amazing. The waiters, waitresses, staff were all very friendly & polite. The food was very good as the buffet restaurant was enormous, there was so much to choose from it was incredible.

One thing to keep in mind about Cabo in general is that if you are looking for great beaches this is not the place for you. The beaches are pretty to look at but they are rough to walk on as the sand is more like stones. The beach was also on a huge tilt downwards towards the water. So much in fact that you had a hard time walking the beach. Also the water is not for swimming as the travel agent & the tour guide on site warned us to never go in the water as the under tow is far too strong.
This is what was disappointing about Cabo in general. The Riu was very nice and if you are going to Cabo I would recommend staying there but for us we prefer the white sandy beaches & warm swimmable water of the Caribbean.
I am glad that I got to see Cabo but I would probably not return due to the water & beach issues.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Cabo. We went for a wedding along with 50 other guests. We all stayed at this hotel and overall, I would say this hotel was nice. It did have it's pros and cons just like any other place.

Pros: $12.00 (U.S.) cab ride to town or $1.00 bus ride. You can also catch the bus to San Jose for $27 paseo's.

Con: You have to walk to the main highway from the hotel to catch the bus and it's about 1 km walk. You also have to cross a very busy highway in order to catch the bus to go into downtown Cabo San Lucas. When going to San Jose, you'll have to let the Driver know you want to get off as close to town square as possible other side, you'll get dropped off in the hotel zone which is around 2 km away. You can then take a cab for $5.00 (U.S.) to get to town square.

Pro: Buffet is really good. There is a lot of selection; something for everyone. There is also an outdoor buffet for lunch and snacks. The selection is smaller but still very good. You are able to take your food out of the buffet and eat it wherever you want. Most hotels don't let you do this.

Con: The restaurants are limited and you need to go every morning to pre-book. We were only able to make one reservation and the rest of the week was fully booked; therefore, we had to eat at the buffet every night, which was fine.

Pro: There are 2 very large pools and a couple swim up bar pools. One pool is the 'party' pool where all the games are held and the music is a little louder and upbeat and the 2nd pool is the 'quiet' pool. They still play music; maybe a little more low key.
There is one very tiny kids pool.

Con: You require towel cards.

Pro: There is a gym on site plus there is a local gym just outside of the resort. You can walk. It will take you about 15 minutes. It's called Cabo Fitness or something like that. If you choose to take a cab from the resort, it will cost you $8.00 (U.S.).

Con: The gym onsite is terrible. There are no free weights and the machines are about 30 years old. The gym is very small and there isn't room to do any kind of stretching or ab exercises etc. There are a few bikes and treadmills but definitely one of the worst hotel gyms. Only con about the off site gym is if you choose to go in the evening it gets very busy because this is when all the local goes. Drop in fee is $12.00 (U.S).

There is also a Costo and Walmart near by.

Pro: The lounging area on the beach is really nice. You can lay under the palm trees or drag your chair into the sun.

Con: There is no beach bar. The Servers do come on the beach to take your orders but don't expect your drink anytime soon as the Servers are extremely busy. They do their best.

Cruise Ships harbour in the bay every night/day making bartering difficult. The merchants are reluctant to come down in their prices because they know the volume of people from the cruise ships will certainly pay what the asking price is.

Hotel property does not take U.S. cash. Bring Paseos. In order for the Mexican's to exchange their U.S. tips, they need to provide, i.d. passport etc. which makes it very difficult because many don't have the right documentation to make the exchange. Paseos are greatly appreciated.

Our room was clean; although, I did a see a few cockroaches cruising around. When you check in, ask for the rooms at the end of the wings facing the ocean. We were in 3117 and it was suppose to be ocean view. You could see a little of the ocean but there was a lot palm trees in our way. Any rooms on level 3 and below, I would classify as garden view.

If you are planning a wedding, keep in mind if you're having it outside around 7:00 - 9:30 pm on the beach, this will be the same time the resort throws on their nightly kids and adult shows. The reception for the wedding we attended was right on the beach below the outside auditorium. This make it very difficult to hear speeches or enjoy music due to the show being held right above.

I would say this resort is more for friends, groups or business. If you're going solo, you might be better off staying at the Sante Fe. The crowed is way younger and it's a party hotel.

Some of the safes have keys while other have the combination lock.

There is one large lobby bar and 1 disco. The disco is pretty small, dark and hot and the music is super loud.

Swimming is not recommended in the ocean in-front of the resort due to the strong undertows in the water. If you are not an advanced swimmer, i would not recommend it.

Lover's beach is a short boat ride across the way. You should pay anywhere from $100 - $150 paeso's to get there.

The beds are rock hard and the linens are about 20 thread count. Ladies know what I'm talking about regarding the linens. Men probably wouldn't even notice. Not the most comfortable.

Room Tip: See suggestion above. Stay in the far wings and at least level 3 or 4 if you're looking for oce...

The Riu Palace is one of the best resorts that we have been to. It is a bit more expensive than the Riu Santa Fe next door, but is a bit of an upgrade as well. The Santa Fe was a more lively place for the younger crowd and the quiet side of the Palace was better for those wanting a quieter place.
The suite was lovely, overlooking a quiet garden area above the pool. Further out, the Ocean. The staff were consistently friendly and helpfull.
The Krystal fusion, speciality restaurant was the best speciality restaurant we have ever been to at an all inclusive. It would rank as a total top end stand alone restaurant back home in Toronto. From the decor, table setting to all the courses. truly amazing. We both agree that it topped the "gourmet inclusive" over on the Mayan Riviera side.
The others were very good.
One unusual observation was the wine. It was a choice of red or white, and just cleared the bar of drinkable and not offensive. I would have been happy to pay extra to have a good wine, but there was no option. Don't you just have to laugh at, as my kids would say, these are first world problems. The coffee was the best we have had in Mexico. I still went into town once for a starbucks fix.
The mini bar was always filled, and there was 4 bottles for our use. Despite the labels, they were all really tequila. Good thing I like tequila. It was a bit of a joke for all visitors.
I enjoyed swimming in the ocean infront, but the surf was strong, and not suited for those that are not strong swimmers.
Overall a top resort.

Room Tip: As you enter the hotel the rooms are on the left or right. The left is the fun, party, bar and game...

It was my first time in Mexico and it left a lasting impression. Was down there for a friends wedding. The ceremony was beautiful and the officiant did a great job. The food was great, even the buffet food was really good. The fusion a la carte restaurant is a must. The staff was great and always ready to make sure you were taken care of. Highly recommend and would go again in the future.

This hotel has beautiful and wonderful views of the area and ocean. It also is a very large hotel, a lot of stairs and walking. The bars are very nice and fun with wonderful views and plenty of seating for everyone. The pools are nice, one does play loud music for the younger crowds and the other is more mild, which was nice. Food was ok - average, however, I think breakfast was the best of all. The rooms are large and clean, however, we paid for an ocean view - it was more like a partial ocean view.

We just returned from our honeymoon yesterday and we were very pleased with the Riu Palace. The resort was very clean, the staff was constantly working hard to make sure it was spotless. All of the workers were so kind and helpful. The food was good but not the best. We left the resort a few times for dinner to get a break from the food. Our only complaint was the apple representative that helped us plan our excursions. We wanted to take a boat trip to go to lover's beach and he suggested we do the trip that involved snorkeling. Neither of us were thrilled about snorkeling but he said we didn't have to do it if we didn't have to. The day of the excursion we were surprised to find out that he had signed us up for a snorkeling only excursion! We ended up having to pay an another $160 dollars in addition to the $160 we spent on the snorkeling tour so we could actually do what we wanted. When I told the apple guy that he had messed up he just laughed and said he was sorry. So, words of wisdom, be careful what you sign up for! Other than that incident our stay was amazing!

Just returned from a 7 night "girls trip" (5 of us) to the Riu Palace. Before leaving I spent a great deal of time reading other reviews. After being there I cannot imagine what anyone could possibly complain about ....On 2 occaisions we made special requests to RIU staff and they were so happy to grant them! If you need anything ----just ask! We all absolutely LOVED this resort! When we arrived we were greeted with cocktails and a very quick check-in in the very grand open air lobby. The hotel was so clean....staff constantly cleaning day and night. The location of the hotel is fantastic - only 3 miles ($12 cab ride) to downtown Cabo San Lucas. The view of El Arco, Lands End, and incoming Cruise ships is breathtaking. All staff were very friendly, fun, and accommodating. We ate in all of hotel's restaurants. When you check in stop at concierge to make reservations. Breakfast buffet and Japanese were our favorites. We had a fantastic time shopping in markets bargaining for all purchases. Bring lots of US $1's and $5's for shopping and tips. (Tips are optional at hotel). US dollars are accepted everywhere! (not Canadian $). Be sure to visit Medano Beach, Marina, and take a boat trip tour around Lover's Beach ($12). Plenty of tour services in hotel lobby to plan activites if desired!
