“Four Star Rating Might Be Overly Generous”

We and two family members stayed at the Hacienda Del Mar Vacation Club for two weeks in June. We were there on an RCI exchange. Overall, we are torn between a three and four star rating. Let's call it a 3.5.

We were assigned a second floor unit looking out at the reception building and the parking area (and, believe me, we requested a better assignment). The unit was nice enough with two generous bedrooms, two and one-half baths, and a large terrace with a table and four chairs and two chaises. These amenities were not the best we've had at Los Cabos resorts. One disappointment was the kitchen. The number of settings, serving pieces, cookware and utensils were stingy. The coffee maker didn't always function properly. Some days we had adequate towels and bath mats; others we were a bit shorted. The bathrooms were a little dated.

Our first night we were awakened by loud talking and laughter outside about 2:30 AM. At first we thought it was folks stumbling in from the bars and passing by on their way to another unit. But the noise didn't move away. After 15-20 minutes of this, we dressed and went out onto the terrace. To our amazement, we learned that it was two staff members carrying on a conversation outside the reception building as though they were in their living room. Even a shout down didn't get their attention. A call to the front desk said it would be taken care of, which took another 8-10 minutes. The management of a fine resort would have personally apologized or sent something next day to apologize for this serious breech of staff etiquette. It was never mentioned.

A number of individual staff members were truly great, upbeat and going to lengths to be helpful. But in general, some of the staff seemed either to not have been well trained, or to be indifferent, when compared to other resorts in Mexico where happy greetings and kindly offers of help are found at every turn. In particular, the wait staff at the beach were hard to track down even though occupancy was not at peak.

The food was okay, but simple lunch choices were generally overpriced, in the $12 -14 range. Mixed drinks were about $10, expensive unless you availed yourselves of the numerous 2 for 1 offerings. However, cocktails were very well made. See separate review for the resort's fancy dining venue, Pitahayas.

Some of the activities were good, e.g., zumba, stretch.

The pools and beach were generally well kept. Little wooden walkways across the sand were nice. Other little touches were not. E.g. Leaves in the hallway, bird droppings on stairs and some sad-looking fabric flowers in the hallway.

We enjoyed our stay and might give the resort another try sometime. But first we'lll probably look elsewhere for our next exchanges.

We stayed in oceanfront presidential 2 bdrm last week. I don't agree with previous reviewers that resort is well kept. I think they are trying but seem to miss some of the more obvious things- for example, the stone stairs to our third floor unit had multiple liquid stain( spilled coffee or other dark liquid?) and bird droppings that could have easily been power washed off stairs. They remained for the entire stay. The sticky looking stain outside the 2nd floor unit gathered dust and every time I walked the stairs to our room, I hated to look at it.
The rooms were fairly well kept although we did find a cockroach in living room and there were tiny little ants by the sink in the 2nd bathroom. When I told the gentleman at the desk about the roach he replied,"what would you like me to do about it?" I did look at other rooms not oceanfront and decided that they too were no better and not worth the move.
The main door to suite was not completely flush and the light peaked through the door and door frame.
Tiles in shower were chipped. Tiles on the floor very scratched up. The good news, good sheets and clean towels and good air conditioning.
Early in mornings there were always a crew of workers sweeping walk ways but they never seemed to get it all.
All that being said, concierge was very nice and helpful. Wait staff at pool and restaurants were extremely pleasant and helpful.
Beautiful location but some extra care needs to be given to the interior units to rate this place better than average.

I have traveled the world and I have to rank Hacienda Del Mar as one of my top vacations spots. Staff was outstanding,restaurants outstanding,accomodations oustanding, Spa oustanding . What a perfect vacation for families ,groups,or romantic getaways. I cannot wait to go back .

Room Tip: All rooms are equally great not a bad room in the house.

We just returned from our family vacation down in Cabo and have already decided we want to go back next year!.

We stayed at the Hacienda del Mar and I cannot say enough about how beautiful the resort was. We stayed in a 3 bedroom ocean view penthouse which was a short walk to the pools and beach area. At first I was a little disappointed that we weren't oceanfront, however, the walk really wasn't a big deal at all. The unit was very clean and much more spacious than most places we have stayed over the years. Master bedroom had a king bed and the other 2 bedrooms had 2 queen beds in each. Each room had its own bathroom and there was an extra bathroom in the hallway - plenty of room for everyone. The staff was very friendly and helpful and always eager to answer any questions.

We ate at several of the restaurants at the resort and the food was always very good. There are a variety of places to eat that offer different types of food so it was great to have different options each day. Every day there were drinks specials around the pool/beach area and we definitely took advantage of them! The beach was absolutely beautiful but too rough for us to swim, however, every afternoon just down the beach a little there were people who went in. If there one 1 thing that was a little disappointing I would say it was that you cannot swim in the ocean but that is the case with most resorts in Cabo.

We traveled with good friends of ours who traded in their timeshare but couldn't get into HDM. It wasn't one of their options when they were booking it so they stayed at a place closer to the town. They said their place was fine, however, the LOVED the HDM when they came to visit us. They spent an afternoon with us and couldn't say enough nice things about the resort. Their kids had eaten at Tomatoes one night with mine and liked it so much they came back another night and we all ate there! They wished they could've stayed at the HDM.

We rented a car for the week and arranged it right thru concierge. It was a great decision and saved us a lot of money. They dropped the car off right at the hotel and picked it up on our last day. Very convenient! The drive into town is basically one road and there are plenty of parking options in town.

The staff at the concierge was great all week. We arranged several activities including, the shuttle to/from the airport, private deep sea fishing boat, kayaking, dinner reservations at nearby restaurants etc. They were so helpful all week.

My friend and I went for massages at the Cactus spa and it was excellent! The spa was beautiful - very clean and beautifully decorated. There are a couple of waiting areas including one with a waterfall, 3 different types of hot/cold tubs, soothing music - we almost didn't leave but thought our husbands would be searching for us!

We have 3 boys ages, 20, 18 and 11 - the older ones wished it was a little more lively at the pool/beach area, however, we told them when they start paying for their vacation they can stay wherever they want! They went out every night and either took a cab home or our friend who also rented a car drove them back. They loved Cabo as well and look forward to going back next year too.

As I said we have already decided we definitely want to go back next year - I would definitely recommend staying at HDM.

Spent a week at Hacienda del Mar in Jul/Aug 2012 using a Disney timeshare swap. Had a 1-bedroom condo.
Pros: Clean facility, friendly staff, rooms are up to date and the air conditioner works well (it was hot outside!). Water pressure in rooms is very strong. There are several pools and 6 restaurants to choose from. Food quality was good. Gated property with security personnel visible. Rental cars are delivered to the facility at no extra cost.
Cons: Hot water could be scalding for little kids. Restaurants on property are above average in cost. Facility is several kilometers from town, so you will need to rent a car or take pricey cabs (facility offers a shuttle for $10/person round trip, but it does not start until 9a each day). The property sits on a beautiful beach, but swimming is not recommended due to large waves and a strong undertow. Sleeper sofa was more like a futon (it is a folding cushion rather than a box spring and mattress). Front desk was unable to make change in US dollars (we were told this is not uncommon in Mexico). Satellite TV service had frequent blips in service. WiFi is free for 30 mins/day, otherwise it costs about $12/day.
Would I stay there again? Yes. My cons are minor but good to know. It is a clean, secure place to stay. Given the remote location,I’d recommend the hotel expand the shuttle times to start earlier and end later.

Room Tip: There are at least 15 buildings to stay in. Ask to stay closer to the main lobby so your walks are...

My husband and i purchased a timeshare at Hacienda del Mar years ago and have loved it ever since! The property is always kept in amazing condition...they take care of every detail and it shows as you walk through the property. The ocean views are incredible...we love sitting on the patio and enjoying breakfast or reading a book in the late afternoon. The food is amazing...the level of service is top notch...you can sit poolside and have an incredible lunch and drinks whenever because they are always available to take your order...we have gone many other places and always come away with the fact our resort is the best! I am going back next week and cant wait!!!

Room Tip: Anything ocean front is amazing but the ocean view rooms are nice too! Ask for a higher floor becaus...

We stayed in a 3 bedroom new suite on an RCI exchange and would have to say it was the nicest accommodation we've had in terms of comfort, layout, space etc. The beach front setting is just stunning with pools and restaurants overlooking a beautiful (but dangerous to swim in) beach. The glamorous restaurants are very expensive but they do have special deals through the week. We caught taxis to the local beaches to snorkel and went on a wonderful day trip to Todos Santos with Rancho Tours. Throughly recommend this classy resort.
