Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort
Ranked #23 of 71 Hotels in Cabo San Lucas
Reviewed November 9, 2011

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach is an amazing resort on the Pacific Side of Cabo San Lucas. The grounds are gorgeous and the rooms are beautiful as well as comfortable. All of the rooms face the ocean and have balconies or a patio, so there is no need to fear not getting a room with a view. We enjoyed the convenient shuttle that goes from the resort to their sister resort Pueblo Bonito Rose as it made it easy to get to town without having to take a taxi. Sunset Beach Resort is quieter and the Rose is a more active resort which is located right on the beach where you can swim. A guest at Sunset Beach can use the facilities at the Rose and vice-versa. You don't want to swim in the ocean at the Sunset Resort as the waves are huge but having the option to use the Rose's property allows for swimming in the ocean if that is your thing. We stayed in a junior suite which includes a kitchen which made our vacation more relaxing as we enjoyed breakfast on the balcony watching the truly magnificent sunrises most mornings. We love the town of Cabo San Lucas which has many good restaurants and we never felt unsafe. We are definitely going back!

Room Tip: All of the rooms face the ocean so there really isn't a bad location.

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach is different than all other resorts in Cabo. This huge property has 4 pools, ranging from the adult's only "Library Pool" (everybody is reading a book), to the two family pools complete with outdoor dining and swim up bars. The "Sky Pool" has a 360 degree view of the Pacific and the Bay. All the rooms are well appointed, with private patios. Luxury suites with their own private hot tubs are worth the upgrade. The property boasts one of the Continent's most famous Chefs at the 5-star "La Freida" restaurant, but all manner of food, from sushi to bar munchies are available. The property has no motorized traffic; golf carts pick you up at a moment's notice for free transportation on property, and there are free shuttles to downtown Cabo from 9 am to 9 pm. The spa is a wonder of total relaxation, and literally transports you to another world. Prices are comparable to this level of luxury in the US. It is a great location for anyone with mobility problems, as long as they can climb 2 steps into the carts. Hotel has an English language secondary school for staff, so they are not only uncommonly courteous, but fluent in many languages.

Downside: No swimming access to the Beach, as there is a severe undertow.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean or pool views. Ask for suite with private hot tub.

Let me start by saying the rooms and grounds are beautiful, very well appointed and very clean. Everything you'd expect from a Pueblo Bonita property. This is located on the pacific side of Cabo San Lucas and is cut out of a huge mountain. This makes it (just a tad) bit further away from Medano Beach and other local attractions but it feels very private and remote. We actually didn't eat at any of the restaurants other than The Bistro, because we enjoy going to San Jose Del Cabo or Downtown for our meals. We find that hotel restaurants are over-priced for just okay food. My only complaint about this resort is the fact that you have to take a golf cart to get around. The pools are very spread out and the roads are very winding which makes it nearly impossible to walk everything. Its annoying you have to constantly call to get a ride in a golf cart and be prepared to be constantly tipping someone.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view.

As owners, we really love Sunset Beach. The units are gorgeous, well appointed, with every amenity needed. We have stayed in a 1 bedroom and a junior suite. Both are great. The pools are very nice - though the chairs are often hard to secure.

The grounds are pristine and very well maintained. The restaurants have a great variety and price range and the Spa is absolutely wonderful.

Keep in mind that Sunset Beach is removed from downtown Cabo. You must cab or shuttle over to town. We don't mind because we really like the peace and quiet of the area but this may not appeal to others. Sunset Beach offers a complementary shuttle down to their sister property, the Rose. You need reservations but that isn't a problem. A cab will set you back about $10-12.

Also keep in mind that the beach is NOT swimmable. The currents are too strong and it is not safe. However, a quick shuttle ride over to Medano beach and you have the wonderful Sea of Cortez to enjoy.

Sunset Beach is also very family friendly. My kids have traveled with us, and felt they had so much to do. We really love this place.

Overall we love this place. You have to know what you're getting into, but since we have owned here since 2003, we knew what to expect.

Good = very friendly help & service; excellent restaurants (La Frida, La Nao, and Bistro), and the pools are well placed (we loved going to the sky pool at the top of the property). The room was very well laid out & spacious; good daily housekeeping; the view from our room was excellent (bldg 19); golf cart service was usually very quick and efficient. My daughter lost her cell phone & Ramon @ the concierge went way out of his way to try to find it.

Poor = phone service was sporadic - the messages we were left couldn't be retrieved; international 800 service didn't work so we ended up spending >$100 to call home due to a family emergency; we arrived early (Noon) & there is no good plan to check in early (4:00pm).

The final decision is we love coming here, but they need to get a little more aggressive in fixing the little things that make it a high-end hotel.

Room Tip: bldg 8-12 give good views of the sunset; try to get a room off the ground floor or you may get woke...

Arrived on a Saturday with a rental car.Parking is free. We were pick up by a golf cart to check in. Lady at reception stated we can have complimentary drink and she showed the location...I know it was a trick to go for the timeshare. The timeshare lady spoke to us briefly, we told her, we were too tired and she understood. She said she wont be there for long...We told her we will be back after puttting our luggage to our room, but we never made it back....
After that no more hassles from timeshare people...
Place is ok, mobility is limited..you either walk or call for a golf cart pick up. Place is huge.We stayed at bldg 26 and got stocked at the elevator for 10 mins.We kept on ringing the alarm,no one came to help us.There is no phone inside the elevator.Good luck if your cell works (ours didnt have any signal). We were kncking and banging the door and my husband had to forcefully open the door and we were 2/3 halfway to the next floor..Quite horrifying and frustrating experience..We tried to tell the employees inearby but we had problems communicating. View is great from the balcony. We didnt try ther food...We bought food from Costco and Walmart and ate at the Marina...We just got the complimentary drink...Overall, I think it is ok to see the place but I want to see other places so maybe this is my last time here...
