Welk Resorts Sirena Del Mar
Ranked #14 of 71 Hotels in Cabo San Lucas
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 24, 2014

We stayed at The Welk Sirena Del Mar last month for five days to celebrate our first anniversary and had the most wonderful vacation!
First, we got a great deal on Hotels.com (and they participate in their Welcome Rewards program) which is always a great start!
This was our first time to Cabo. Have visited Playa, Cozumel, Tulum a few times and was very excited to visit the other side of Mexico! Getting there was also super easy! Since Southwest has now merged with Airtran, we were able to book our flights converting Rapid Rewards points and took an easy direct flight from Orange County. Upon arrival at The Welk we were so impressed with how gorgeous this property is! The reviews are all true! It is beautifully landscaped on a cliff and whoever designed it did a wonderful job of using each level to enhance the natural beauty of the sea and cliffs rising up to the pools and hotel. And the infinity pool! A-MAZ-ing!!
We stayed in a one bedroom condo, which had everything you could possibly need...even a blender! Fiesta dishes, wine glasses, every kind of cooking utensil, even a pitcher that we could make iced tea in (it;s the little things sometimes!) Our condo had a balcony overlooking the ocean and we enjoyed breakfast every morning out there feeling incredibly lucky.
The resort itself is so beautiful that you really could spend your whole time there, but my husband and I wanted to explore as this was our 1st visit. I had researched taking the local bus beforehand and it worked out perfect for us! Plus we did not have to rent a car! Each day we walked up the hill (which is not bad at all and great after those breakfasts on the balcony) to the highway. The buses come by often and it's super easy. There are local white buses that go into Cabo and then SuperCabos buses that run between San Jose and Cabo. We did both and on different days went to Lover's Beach, San Jose, Chileno Beach (great snorkeling and the hotel will provide a snorkel mask, although next time we will bring fins! No need to pay for a snorkeling trip! Just take the bus there!)
Each night after enjoying our adventures we came back and felt like we had the hotel to ourselves! Enjoyed the fire pit and huge jacuzzi each night under the stars! Plus one night we grilled a dorado fish that another guest had given us from their sport fishing trip on the public grills the Welk has by the pool and enjoyed a romantic dinner overlooking the cliffs and sea while watching the Geminids meteor shower! It was like a movie!
The private beach next to the Welk is also really nice with great snorkeling just down the stairs from the resort.
And Jorge and the rest of the the staff is absolutely awesome! So friendly and helpful! And we were never even asked about any kind of timeshare in our 5 days there.
As far as construction, hardly noticed it...we were in a front building and this was in the back. And yes our room did not have service, but we were able to easily ask for towels and paper towels, etc.
Tips:
There is a great little market that is very walkable (just up the hill across the highway and down about two blocks to the right) that has delicious guac and salsa plus lots of gourmet grocery items that are not too expensive.
There is also a cute restaurant that is walkable from The Welk that has $20 Lobster dinners, can't remember the name but just down a path from the road leading to The Welk.
If you are thinking about using the local bus, it is easy to get to the resort from the airport too. We didn't do this and arranged a shuttle but next time we will take the bus! (I love to save $$!)
But if you do want to shuttle try Fun Los Cabos which was only $30 per person round trip. They were great and you actually take a TransCabo shuttle, but on the TransCabo website they only do private shuttles to the Welk which are much more expensive.

Enjoy The Welk! It;s a dream vacation!

I will definitely go back there again.

Avoid the building close to the construction.

Staff memebers were all great.

It's a beautiful resort, quiet and has a nice beach which is protected from high waves.

The place itself is so nice that you can just stay there all day and relax.

You probably need a rental car if you are going to stay there. Yes you can do without, but it's so much easier with a car. The entrance to their drive way is not well marked.

Nice property with a private swimming beach. Very nice resort, quiet, and small. Gorgeous ocean views. The one bedroom villa seemed dark inside, but overall it was nice. The infinity pools are beautiful with sweeping ocean views. We did a snorkeling lesson with Manny in the calm cove and saw lots of beautiful fish just a few feet off the beach. There is a new building being constructed behind the resort. Some comments said the noise was loud, but we were not bothered by much noise - although we were in the farthest building from the work. Even though we already own time share, they really encouraged us to participate in a presentation even though we made it clear we did not want to go. Overall great place for peace, relaxation and awesome beauty. I would definitely go back!

Room Tip: It looks like all rooms have a great ocean view.

We had a lovely stray at the hotel/condo. The setting is beautiful overlooking the arch. I think all the rooms have a fantastic view. Our room was huge with a kitchen, living room, dining room and deck with a hammock and table and chairs. Manny provides entertainment. We took a tequila class along with tasting. It was great fun. The beach is down a lot of stairs, but it isn't as bad as some people have posted. It is a beautiful beach with great snorkeling. We were there for New Years Eve. Dinner that night would be the only thing I have to complain about. It was chilly with no heaters. I don't think they were prepared for all the people that signed up late. We had to wait an hour and a half for our meal. All the staff are super friendly. I would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the pool and also had a view of the ocean

We loved this place because the room was so big and the balcony was very nice. The balconies all have hammocks, couch, and chairs to hang out and listen to the ocean. Your room doors even slide all the way open and the tv can be tilted in case you want to catch a ball game.

This was a great value for its location. It also across the street from a Wal-Mart, and it had a full kitchen in our room. The staff was friendly and accommodating.

Absolutely do not take the time share deal. They offered a free activity in exchange for a "one hour" time share sales pitch, but our pitch lasted for about four hours ... we were trapped!

I don't fault the resort for this. I think any place would be like that.

Room Tip: Get a room on the main floor ... not long to walk.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Sirena Del Mar. A special shout out to Francisco who is a real gem. He is a huge asset to the hotel and was so helpful and friendly that he really contributed to making my stay great! Francisco - I hope the hotel rewards you for your amazing efforts.

Back to the actual hotel. It's a newer hotel that is about ten minutes cab ride from downtown. At first I was concerned about being away from the activities so readily available on Medano beach. But after a day or two I really appreciated the peace and tranquility of Sirena del mar.

It is beautifully located with amazing views, and as a real bonus is adjacent to a gorgeous little swimming beach that has excellent snorkeling. If you want the hustle and bustle of Medano beach you can always go there for an afternoon but when you want some peace it's wonderful to come back to the serenity and beauty of Sirena del Mar.

The one downside of this boutique resort is that it has only one restaurant so food options on the premises are fairly limited. Rooms are equipped with full kitchens, however, and so with a Walmart and Costco nearby it pays to stock up with your favorite goodies. We struck a good balance between eating at the hotel restaurant vs going out (mainly for dinner) vs eating food we stocked up with. And so on balance we were very satisfied with the food situation but this may not appeal to all.

On Fridays it's worth eating dinner at the Friday Fiesta with some added entertainment from Manny, the hotel entertainment guy. He was really fun throughout our stay and accommodated our kids with some fun activities.

Talking about kids, I think it's worth mentioning again that this is more a boutique hotel than a mainstream resort. We were there with another family and friends. But for families going on their own with kids / teenagers I can imagine the hotel may be a little on the quiet side for them. It's not really an atmosphere where kids meet and hang out with other kids as often happens at a Club Med type resort. It also lacks the more festive atmosphere found at places like Pueblo Bonito Rose or Blanco which are located on Medano beach near the famed "Office" restaurant and vibey Mango Deck.

But for us it was great. The rooms are new and beautifully laid out, the views are spectacular, the adjacent beach perfect for snorkeling or reading a book, the service good and and all in all a restful vacation that I will savor for a long time to come.

Do NOT pass up staying at this resort! We were never approached to review time share options. Perched on a cliff, the views from any area in this resort were designed brilliantly. Our balcony & all the walls surrounding the pool & lounging areas were glass permitting heavenly views from sunrise to sunset. We saw whales everyday from our balcony & it seems to be the place they congregate as we took a whale watching excursion to the same area. El Arco was seen from every angle. The snorkeling from the resort's private beach was unbeatable & jaw dropping requiring no excursions as they have the equipment there to use. Downtown was a $15 cab ride. Although luxurious & convenient to the excursion hubs, the resorts there were lined up with just sand & the Sea of Cortez to look at. The Sirena is classy & cleverly designed & gave us the best of everything Cabo has to offer. Because it's a smaller resort, there was never a struggle for lounging. Aside from the two pools, other lounging areas had a pool of water in front of them to dip & cool off. Great swim up bar, then a dry bar. Food fantastic. The room/villa was amazing & thoroughly accommodating. Staff super. They arranged our cabs which were secure and professionally managed. Highly recommend using their airport transportation service. Excursions: Whale Watch Cabo and Pisces fishing outstanding and get you to El Arco so no need for water taxis or glass bottom boats to get there, unless you want to lounge at Lover's Beach. They're adding two more buildings which won't have the views like the two front units. Hopefully that won't take away why this resort is unique. We hated to leave for excursions for the day; the resort was priceless relaxation without any boredom. There is a Costo and Walmart to shop for groceries. No hassle if you're drinking and eating your food or theirs.
