“Perfect Combination to Make for Great Vacation”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

The people at Villa del Palmar are incredibly sweet and accommodating. While attentive, I wouldn't call it speedy. But definitely not an issue as that was exactly the pace I was looking for during my time off. Perfect time of year to go- just after the winter holidays. There were enough people to keep the place lively, but not overwhelming. They have a good amount of amenities onsite to keep you comfortable, but only about a 20 minute walk from downtown in case you'd like to venture out. Food was nice, too. Beautiful view of El Arco. Perfect for couples, families or friends. The one thing that I could do without is the sales pitch to get you to visit the condos. But when we said that we weren't interested (once, firmly), that was the last we heard about that. I would definitely stay there again.

My sister and I went to Villa del Palmar for 10 days in November 2012. We had a wonderful time except for the timeshare push. We declined it in person, on the phone and then got a paper taped to our door. That was the only bad part of the resort. We really enjoyed the buffet dinners (did all inclusive) and especially the nightly entertainment. Entertainment staff knowledgeable and fun, and got the party going. Liz Munoz working the breakfast buffet was wonderfully kind and helpful, and is their best server! Breakfast buffets were great with lots of fresh fruit. Enjoyed being by the pool and joining in on the games and water aerobics every day. Esther was great bringing us drinks and snacks by the pool. I don't know why this gets bad reviews - guess some people are just very particular. It was clean and beautifully landscaped. Would go again someday if not for the timeshare sales.

The Villa del Palmar has been around for awhile. Not a fancy place and the rooms are looking their age so don't expect a lot. The pool is noisy in the afternoons with the bingo and poolside entertainment(?).

With that said it is a great base of operations. We walked to Los Cabos twice most days, once for an outing and then again for dinner. With all the great restaurants in Los Cabos I do not understand why anyone would want to do the all inclusive (unless they had two teenage boys traveling with them).

We did have the breakfast brunch on our last day. We figured we needed to load up for a day of traveling. The custom omelet was good and the view along is the beach is wonderful in the morning.

Room Tip: We had a mountain view to help keep down the costs. Personally I like these rooms because 1) you...

On arrival, hotel was very impressive at check in, don't get me wrong it is a nice hotel. In the 7 days we stayed there, the service was horrible, first night we went up to the Sports lounge, only us there, 2 servers cleaning tables around us, not one helped us. We waited for about 5 mins, I finally got up and asked the bartender for a water, and 2 drinks, with him telling me I was only allowed to order 2 drinks at a time. I said we've been sitting here for 5 mins and no one has helped us, in a very aggravated tone, he apologized, then called one of the servers to help us. Next morning we tried to go for buffet in sports bar, not even seated, a server walks up to us,and says, there's another restaraunt down by the beach, pretty much pushing us away. So we walked away, best service was at the italian restaraunt down by beach, we ate there everyday. The beach staff was pretty good and consistent on coming around with drink orders, but try to get a drink at the poolbar, omg, stand there for 10-15 mins with being ignored, and ppl served before you when clearly they knew you were there first. Talk about very ungrateful, they made you feel like your money was not worthy of their service. We had the supper buffet once, you were waiting in line anywhere from 10-45 mins to be seated, and when seated it was at the end of a table that 4 other ppl were seated at, awkward, and didnt get to see a show, it was right after supper, and no one left. Unless you would stand to watch. We were asked many times on beach, and while booking activities to attend a timeshare, even though we had already, it was part of our package deal, along with 120.00 gratuities before we arrived, and at checkout, they charged us 30.00 for the gardeners, and other hotel staff, along with our everyday tipping that we didnt feel the need. On a good note, we didnt mind the locals selling their goods, we did support them, got our hair braided, it was the only shopping we did, we did not get into town. Overall the food was not good, service was horrible, everyday it was something, I felt embarrased as it was my boyfriends first trip anywhere, and this is how it turned out.

Room Tip: Junior Suite

I am writing this review as both someone that has had their wedding at VDP and also as a guest that has stayed at VDP.

WEDDING
We had our wedding ceremony on the beach in front of the restaurant. It was a beautiful setup, but if you are looking for a private ceremony, that it is not. Most of the patrons on the beach were still lying out all around our setup, and there were probably hundreds of people a long the railing looking down over. This did not bother me too much, but something to be aware of if you are planning a private, intimate ceremony.
We had our reception at the Bella California Restaurant, and I could not have been happier with that choice. We bought out the entire restaurant for the evening, so there were no other hotel guests anywhere. The sunset that night was magical, and the views were absolutely incredible. The fire torches were lit on the railing going a long the beach, and there was a fire in the firepit...it was gorgeous! We did not like a reception venue that we liked better than this one.
This hotel was also perfect for our wedding guests because it was both family friendly, and close to so many things to do. Walking distance (on the beach) to downtown, or a short cab ride to the Marina. As you get closer to downtown, many of the resort beaches are extremely crowded with people/vendors/college kids, etc...This beach was not like that, and we especially enjoyed that. There are definitely a lot of resort patrons on the beach, but it is not so overly crowded that you cannot walk around.

HOTEL
We had a beautiful room with a great view in building #1. We had a 1 bedroom on the fourth floor over looking the very private section of the beach, and had great sunrise views. The living room was spacious, the kitchen had full size appliances, a long with a breakfast bar, and both bathrooms were large and very clean. The bedroom had a King Size bed, and lots of closet space. I thought the room was great, and I could tell that it had been pretty recently renovated. It did not seem old or outdated.

The food at Bella California was pretty good...however you must make a reservation to eat there. The pizza bar is good, and the bar menu you can order from the beach(Fish tacos, quesadillas, etc...) was really good! The breakfast buffet was probably the best, in my opinion. The other buffets during the day and at night were okay. Service was a little bit slow all around...bar and food, but if you're on vacation, there's no need for a hurry!

The location of this hotel is one of the reasons I know we will be back. Perfect location between downtown Cabo and Cabo San Jose. Easy to get to bars, restaurants, shopping...and close! I think the next time we come, we will not do the All-inclusive. Mainly because there are SO many good places to eat downtown (Edith's, Esquina, Corazon de Alcachofa, etc)...which are all extremely close by, and I am not the biggest fan of buffets. Also, the nice, big kitchen in the rooms, and the proximity of Costco, Walmart, and Sam's Club would make it very easy to stock up the fridge for the day with food and drinks, and then we would be able to enjoy a nice dinner out. Sometimes it can take so long to get a drink from the bar, or server, that it may be easier to have them in your room.

Everyone that works at VDP was beyond generous, helpful and very hard working. I did not have any issues with time share people, but I'm not sure if that's because they knew we were the bride and groom. Regardless, I would recommend staying here, or any of the Villa Group Resorts.

Room Tip: You may have to upgrade if you want ocean view...but it's worth it.

Villa del Palmar is a great, family-friendly option. We had an ocean view room in building 2 which overlooked the hotel grounds and the sea. Although some aspects of the room were a bit dated (kitchen), it was quite spacious and clean. The food was much better than I had anticipated as many all-inclusive options tend to slack on food quality. Although there are only really 3 restaurants included there was a good variety and I didn't find myself bored with the options. There was also a nightly show as well as activities during the day and free rentals of paddle boards, volleyballs, etc. The staff were really friendly and helpful and even though everything was already included in the price they went out of their way to make guests feel comfortable and well taken care of. Extra kudos to Rodolfo and Erik at the pool and Guadalupe and Ricardo in the sports bar.

The hotel is fairly well located- just a quick taxi ride into downtown or a 20ish minute walk. The drawbacks were a lack of free internet (wifi or otherwise) and that all the bars/social areas close around 10:30pm- although this is more of a family oriented property so the hours do match the needs of most of the guests.

Overall, I would definitely stay at the Villa del Palmar again. There was a very social atmosphere amongst the guests as well as the staff and the property is really lovely.

I'm guessing from others' reviews that perhaps this property has quality control issues?? We, family of 4, had a good experience and I guess we managed to ditch time share sellers because we weren't approached at all. I also took off rather quickly after getting my room keys to get back into our car and didn't wait to talk to any host nor did we need help bringing our luggage to our room. We didn't respond to the "come get your concierge package and free drinks" note slipped under the door, maybe that's why? Anyway, we had a large one bedroom suite in building 1, facing the quiet side with partial view of the ocean (if we were just one room closer to the ocean we'd have missed the private residence building next door and had ocean view, but we didn't bother asking to move). Everything in the suite was fine - had murphy bed double sized, asked for a cot the first night but my daughter found it more comfortable sleeping on the couch so returned the cot, king bed in bedroom, bathrooms were renovated but if you looked closely there're definite wear and tear problems but no big deal. Showers had good pressure. Pillows and mattresses were on the hard side. Walls a bit thin, upstairs flushing the toilet sounds like waterfall. Full kitchen was well equipped and with Walmart close by it was very convenient for us. The full table and chairs on the balcony was great for having breakfast. Housekeeping did a good job, only on our last day was the suite not cleaned till late afternoon. On our first day (Jan 2) there was a shortage of pool towels at 4 pm when we got there, but otherwise fine. We always managed to get chairs on the beach. We only ordered lunch once on the beach and service was good ($12 for burger platter), and we ate out in town every night (we rented a car, very convenient and cost effective), so can't comment on the property's restaurants or bars. In fact, we really didn't have a lot of interaction with hotel staff, until check out time. They charged us for all 4 nights for the cot when we returned it after one night, but after a bit of paperwork, it was adjusted, no problem. The beach was great, waves were strong at times but my 11 & 14 yr olds loved it. We liked that we were a bit further down from the crowded Marina area, but still close. Especially for a good rate, we would return to this property again as it served our purpose well.

Room Tip: Building One facing away from the pool (even number rooms), 3rd floor and up.
