We had a great time at the Solmar. We really enjoyed all of the food! Especially the sushi (Cilantro roll & spicy tuna), Yucatan Ceviche (spicy!), French toast, fajitas, hamburgers and the nachos. All of the food does take a while, so order right away and enjoy the view! Everyday we ate our breakfast with an excellent view of the beach. The drinks come a little faster, so waiting was never a problem for us. You just need to plan ahead when you are poolside(order your food as soon as you arrive). They could use another waiter around the pool, but we loved that food and waiter service was provided around the pool. We have never experienced that at other all-inclusives(usually you have to go to the food and get out of the pool). We felt very spoiled! The drinks were all pretty good. We felt the food and drinks were better at the Trebjol bar near the upper pool. Your food was made to order up there and right in front of you! The waiters and staff were all very friendly and helpful! One tip I would give them is to serve appetizer items first and then work on the main dishes. Also, Orbitz said tips were included which was not the case. They definitley expect you to tip, so bring some cash or just add it to your room. And yes you have to sign each time you eat, but once again just plan ahead. If you're done ordering let them know right away to bring your bill. When we were pool side we only had to sign once at the end of the afternoon, so it wasn't a big deal. I did see them forcing others to sign more often.
The resort is older and has a more authentic feel than the neighboring resorts. It is also much smaller, so you get to know people and staff around the resort. We liked being so close to the beach and we had a great view. You could hear the waves crashing and yes it would shake our sliding glass door. We found it was better to the leave the door open at night, so we would hear the waves but not the rattling. I would not recommend this resort if you are a light sleeper. We loved the large bathtub/shower!
There are a lot of stairs and our room was right above the upper pool, so it was a short walk to the main restaurant and pool. I enjoyed the walk, especially considering all we were consuming.
We enjoyed walking the beach and did the walk/climb over to Divorce and Lovers beach and then all the way back around the resort. It was really nice and no taxi required! Just where good climbing shoes and bring a little tip $. We also went to the Puerto San Lucas restaurant on our last night and it was lovely. The piano player is great and the clam chowder, Caesar salad, bread and martinis were excellent! I would highly recommend going just for a change of menu.
We also went down to the Playa Grande one morning and enjoyed a change of scenery. Plus the pools were warmer! There are a lot more families over there. We also checked out he Grand Solmar one evening and their pools were almost like jucuzzis!
We saw no kids at the Solmar- only a 14 year old. We appreciated that, since we left our kids at home. We loved our stay and would return!

My husband and I just got back from a great long weekend at Solmar! It was beautiful and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We both had spa treatments, expecting it to be ok...as they don't rely on repeat clientele. It was amazing we both went back while we were there. The food service and waiting for our check was a bit slow and probably the only thing we didn't like.

Ok, so it's much different then a few years ago. The lobby is really very tiny at the moment and can only handle a handful of people. We did wait a bit to get checked in and as we waited for our room keys they had us sit with their timeshare person. Not so great. We did not sign up for their time share breakfast, and we had heard that it's really 3hrs long and somewhat rude if you don't sign with them. Our room was by the pool, and it was a good size room. Loved the bed so comfy. The pool could use some work. They have 2 pools. Not so big. Food was ok. Drinks ok. Service ok. Most were really nice but a few seemed to have an attitude.

My husband and I just returned from a week vacation at the Solmar to celebrate our 5 year wedding aniversary. We opted to do the all inclusive package for 6 nights/7 days. We read many reviews before deciding on this property and were pleased with the trip. We chose the Solmar based on these reviews and the close location to downtown and the Marina (only about a 10-15 min walk or about a $8-$10 cab ride) Upon our arrival we were greeted by Ramon who offered us an upgrade (for a charge even after we told him it was our anniversary), but showed us the room we would be getting before we committed. I suggest if they can upgrade you too a room closer to the restaurant/pool do it. The location is good, nice view, and you can hear the waves crashing- worth the charge. Ramon was great and always there when we needed something or had questions. Also, check-in and check-out was seemless.
We did opt to do the time share presentation at the Grand Solmar for discounted activites. The property was gorgeous and our rep Marco was nice but the property was slightly over priced. However we did get hooked up with discounted activities for our whole trip. So if you want to save some cash I'd say do it- but have your mind made up if you want to buy or not before going in (towards the end it became kind of a hard sell presentation... not with Marco but their "closers" and ended up much more time than the 90mins). However because of that time spent we did get to do ATVs, snorkeling, glass bottom boat tour to Lovers Beach and 2 25min massages at a hotel at Medano beach (as well the use of their facilities for the day) for less than $100. Well worth the time spent if you ask me.
The food was decent. Nothing to write home about. Breakfast was the best for sure. I suggest trying the more traditional Mexican dishes on the menu. We came to the property knowing that service is not speedy as most of us here in the USA are accustomed to. So be prepared for your breakfast/lunch/dinner at the restaurant to take minimum of an hour. Something to consider esp if you have an activity planned. Service is a bit scattered. Esp at dinner. My suggestion would be for waiters to have more assigned sections to keep it a bit more organized. But overall we knew what we were getting into. Jose is definately my favorite breakfast waiter for sure.
Pool side service for the bar was good. You can get food by the pool which is awesome for snacking during the day. Drinks were not watered down and there was a good variety of tropical drinks to choose from. Placido was awesome! So friendly, fast service, a real pleasure. And yes you do have to sign for every single thing you order whether its a whole meal or just a bottle of water. Kind of annoying only bc it wasnt always speedy to get the check once you had to be on your way. One thing I wish they did was replace the included bottled water daily in your rooms. I did learn to just ask for 2 extras when leaving breakfast each morning to make sure we had it at night after the bar closed.
Grounds were very well kept. You can tell that they take pride in the way the property looks. Our maid Marisela always kept our room wonderful and returned later in the evening for turn down service and to replace any towels that needed to. We even received some wonderful towel art on our second day.
We spent most of the time around the hot tub which was great. There is a swim up bar in the regular pool as well. The breeze made it a bit chilly for me to get in the regular pool but many people took advantage of it.
We met so many wonderful staff members. One that stood out was Ruben Figueroa in security. My husband met him our second night there while he was working the night shift at the front. He was a real pleasure and remembered us for our whole trip. He always made sure we were taken care of and had no issues.
Getting a shuttle ride back to the airport was a breeze. The concierge, Christina, booked us one the morning we were scheduled to leave for $18 a person (what we paid at the airport to get to the hotel). I was happy that was so easy, as we did not plan ahead.
One tip this is not a property I would bring the family to simply because there really aren't activities. Not exactly kid friendly (although there were a couple of children staying). But great for couples, or friends trips. I would take my family back to the Playa Grande (their sister resort that is a bit more expensive, but more family friendly).
Overall it was a great trip and the stay at the Solmar was good. It was a great value for the price. So if you are looking to stay within a budget for an all inclusive this is a great pick.We honestly didnt spend too much time at the hotel during the day bc of excurisions and such so we probably wouldnt do all inclusive again. BUT doing the all inclusive didnt put us so far off budget that we could not grab food and drinks off property which we did do daily. So it is a win win either way you go. The construction next door didnt bother me any and those who reviewed it in a negative way need to get a grip -the beautiful sounds of the crashing waves of the Pacific drowned that out. I only noticed it if someone pointed it out. Location couldnt be beat for heading downtown and the the Marina. We would return and stay again at a Solmar property for sure.

Room Tip: Go for a room by the pool/restaurant. Convienent in the AM for breakfast and nice to hear the waves...

Compared to other all-inclusive resorts nearby Solmar's staff appears to make no effort in distinguish themselves from the competitors. Odering any kind of food or drink is a painfully slow process.

Key Points
*Ordering breakfast/lunch/dinner on average took 45 minutes to an hour. In one case dinner took nearly 2 hours before we could get our "bill" and leave. That is when we learned to just start leaving. They would then amazingly chase us down with the bill. I would always laugh.
*Even though this is all-inclusive you are expected to sign a bill for everything you order. This is particularly annoying when you are at the pool waiting to leave. In many cases we would leave after waiting an extended period of time and not sign anything. Waiting 45 minutes to sign a receipt for a tecate is simply unacceptable for anyone.

My next point is not as bothersome as the first two but still sets Solmar a step behind all-inclusive resorts in the area.

*Poor hotel layout. If you are in the towers over the lobby area you have a small hike to get to the beach or the resorts only bar-pool. The path to the pool is not direct and instead unnecessarily meanders you around the resort. It makes coming and going from your only food option tedious. Especially when you know you will be stuck at the only restaurant for 45 minutes or more just to have a sandwhich for lunch.

Solmar could correct these issues easily and still be a great place. It is clean, close to town, and on the pacific beach.

For the money you have so many other better all-inclusive options available to you. Why go through this frustration here? You are on vacation. You should find a stress-free option!

Room Tip: Any room near the lobby is terribly out of the way. Prepare for a short hike to the only bar-pool or...

Dear Mr. Rosson from Seattle, Washington;
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others. I would like to offer you an apology due to the slow service you have experienced during your stay; this is an atypical situation in which I am working with my food and beverage manager to be able to meet our customer´s expectations. On the other hand, the way we are working to be different to other all-inclusive options it is offering our customers the meals a la carte that guarantee freshness and good taste instead of the massive food of the buffets some others opt to offer. I understand walk back and forth from the highest buildings to the main social area it might be an inconvenience, thus there is also close to those buildings a second swimming pool and besides to this a snack bar. Once again thank you very much for your suggestions absolutely we will work on them to be the clean, great place and well located resort you recognize we are. I hope to have the chance to greet you here again and provide you an even better experience. Most respectfully Luis Alvarez Resident manager

We went to stay with Solmar for a 5 day all inclusive in mid April on a Living Social deal and had a great time. Although the resort was a bit "dated" the views of the beach and the sounds of the crashing surf were amazing. We found the food in the restaurant very good and the service was adequate but we were never in a hurry to be anywhere. We did attend the time share sales pitch and although it was a bit high pressure in a way I'm sure if you told them no you're not interested they would end it. I'm sure they don't want to waste their time either if there is no prospect for them.

The resort is on the Pacific side of Baja and it is a no swimming beach but it's great to walk the beach down and see the surf crashing on the shore. We found all of the staff to be very friendly and helpful and for the most part all could communicate well in English.

I guess due to the fact we did wind up purchasing a time share at the Grand Solmar we will be visiting again.

There is a reason this place is only rated 27th out of 68 resorts. First is the construction. Our room (2391) could not have been closer to the work site. Loud banging and cutting rebar from 8am to many times 10pm. The only quiet day was Sunday. But we knew about the construction before we booked and were prepared to deal with it. The property itself is nice but a little dated. It is situated between their "primier" properties " Grand Solmar and Playa Grande". We made the mistake of listening to their timeshare presentation and toured both of these resorts. There is a "considerable" difference in the level of quality, food options and activities. On the plus side, the grounds are nicely mainicured and service at the pool was very good. Dining options are limited to the one restaurant. Service at times was extemely slow, more than once we waited more than an hour for our food and once they forgot an entire order for our party of 4. Not the best of dining experiences. Food quality was hit and miss. There are no late night food options. Bottom line: Would we stay here again? No

Room Tip: To lessen exposure to construction noise ask to be by the pool.
