Highland Breeze Accommodations
Ranked #4 of 6 Pleasant Bay B&B and Inns

I'm reading recent reviews and apparently we stayed at the other property, the Highland Breeze. We didn't have any problems at all. We stayed in the Grand Anse room which had a Jacuzzi tub in it. Very large room with large of windows and light. The property had a pool and hot tub. Never had any problems with noise, etc. There is a large kitchen upstairs which I assume anyone can use. The property is conveniently located on the trail and close to the marina where we went whale watching. The breakfast was up the road at Anne's restaurant. Very small restaurant. Looked like they were working on a new deck, so a bit of a mess around outside. Just 2 tables inside, we ate outside - which was fine. The breakfast was good and we had cinnamon rolls that Ann made for dessert, very good. No complaints here.

My uncle, two cousins and I just stayed in the gulf breeze building of the highland breeze B&B. On the positive side, we liked the fact that it was roomy and had a nice outdoor jacuzzi and an indoor game room with a billiards table. The house itself was new and in the process of being renovated. There were semi-unfinished patches on the walls and other minor parts of the house. You have to go downstairs to a dank basement office to use the phone. The first night, one of the toilets did not work properly but they fixed it by the next day. You cannot exit from the back doors because they are still doing work outside.

The breakfast they provide is at the Breeze Restaurant down the road. The food is excellent, but the service is lacking. The waitresses are painfully slow and a few beats behind the customers at all times. There sometimes was not butter, sugar, or jam on the table, they we're slow to refill drinks if it good done at all, and meals were brought out one at a time instead of all at once.

Even the B&B room service was lacking. We walked in one day at 3 PM, and a girl was in there sweeping the game room, but nobody made the beds, cleaned the bathrooms, or changed the towels.

The owner, Anna, is really nice, and I think she tries hard. It could be that once she and the others get more organized, the place will run better, but right now, it is still a work in progress.

I wish I could review this more positively because the B&B has many pluses and the owner seems like a friendly and hard-working woman. We stayed in the Oceanside Suite in August, which is a large space (probably good for families) with lots of over-the-top amenities such as a large TV, Nintendo Wii, pool table in common room, and ensuite jacuzzi. It was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the location along the Cabot trail is great. However, the unit fell short of some very basic standards- it felt like it was in the middle of a renovation with unfinished paint jobs, there were no curtains on the large window in the bed room (we called but were told to string a blanket across it..) the soap bar left for us was ripped half open, there was a torn and very stained chair randomly placed in the bathroom.. We were not greeted by anyone and were left with a note on the door, which would have been OK but on top of the other incongruities just felt cold. The next day we arrived at the restaurant to a very uncomfortable atmosphere with several groups waiting. We ended up waiting an hour for a very average eggs and toast breakfast (fine but we'd had much better at less expensive B&B's), and everything just seemed disorganized and again not very welcoming. I understand that there are chaotic days but it just seemed like there were way too many guests for the available staff. To be clear- most of these negatives would have been totally OK except this was by far the most expensive stay of our trip and it felt someone disingenuous to charge full price for a room that felt like it was being renovated and for a very slow and awkward breakfast.

This property has much to commend it and some snags but the recent harsh reviews seem out of place.
The main building has a large communal kitchen/lounge that is well equipped, including a double fridge/freezer, full oven, dishwasher, a variety of crockery and cutlery, settees and easy chairs and a large TV. The bug screen on one of the windows has been damaged but this is inconsequential. There is no need to open this window because there are many others, plus a new air conditioning unit.
Outside, there is a lovely decking area which catches the sun and surrounds the pool and large hot tub.
The owner provided complimentary baked treats each day and is a skillful cook for breakfasts.
The only significant problem is that the noise made by people using the kitchen/lounge can disturb people in the adjacent rooms and the room below. This should not be a problem if people are respectful of other residents but will be a problem if they are not; which was the case on our second night when a family were very loud and very inconsiderate. Also, some of the bedding is a bit tired.

Room Tip: In addition to the main building, there is an adjacent cabin with 2 double beds and en - suite bathr...

My husband and I stayed at the gulf breeze earlier this month and had the worst experience of our 2 weeks of B&B's in Nova Scotia. We arrived to find a room that still looked under construction with primer on the walls and places without trim. Our back door which was supposed to lead out to a hot tub did not open; and you wouldn't have wanted to go out that way anyways because there was no path to the hot tub, just overgrown grass and a pile of wood that I imagine one day will be a deck. We had no windows that opened in our room, and the air conditioner was very loud and musty smelling. The toilet was clogged and we needed to unclog it. There was no smoke alarm in our room, so fire codes are not being met in this residence. Everything looked shabby and old, and the bed was very uncomfortable. The only time we saw anybody was when we drove to breakfast the next day. The menus listed on the B&B website are not what you will be offered to eat. There was not enough room for all the guests to sit in the restaurant, so we needed to sit outside and eat with the bugs on a dirty table. This B&B was atleast $30 more expensive than every other place we stayed, and I disliked every second of it. Stay it Cheticamp, lots more options.

Worst place we have stayed in the Maritimes the three different years we've visited. In fact, it was right up there with one of the worst we have ever stayed in, period! We were greeted with sloppily painted railings, two outside doors that didn't work properly, a torn screen in the living area, that looked like an animal had tried to get in, a hole in the bathroom window, no one to ask questions of, particularly regarding a television we couldn't figure out, and a JERRY-RIGGED toilet! Unbelieveable! At 11:00 p.m. my husband had to go out to let people know where they they were staying because there is no owner on-site. They were wandering around in the basement, looking for their room. We never did meet her. The only nice place was the communal kitchen/living room area. We thought that a 4 star rating and the price, which, by the way, was the most expensive we stayed in on our trips, might indicate a decent place to stay but that was not to be. Only negative review I have ever written about an accommodation. Everything about it shouted cheap, cheap, cheap. My suggestion would be to fix up what she has instead of going out and buying more properties. Very disappointing. Next time we will go on to Cape North.

Room Tip: Go on to North Cape!

We booked this great stop relatively late for our Cape Breton holiday. We arrived at the Inn a tad late in the day after a great day on the Cabot trail. We were greeted by instructions on paper in our room. We stayed in the French Suite, a lovely 2 BR suite with a queen bed and double murphy bed that slept 4. The Inn was immaculate and very modern. My kids were ecstatic to see the lovely pool, deck and hot tub. We went to town to dine at the rusty anchor ( also good) but were too late to partake in the local fiddle and music that we were invited to by Anna, the owner, just down the road. We were disappointed we did not make that get-together. Beds were comfortable, views are amazing with valleys on one side, mountain on another and ocean on yet another. We awoke to the sound of bustling in the kitchen, Home made French toast, sausages, egg sandwiches and cranberry bread, fresh coffee and juice. Great breakfast, nice people and great experience. I wholeheartedly recommend.

Room Tip: There is at least one separate cottage. We stayed in the French Suite. 2 rooms, private bathroom...
