“Cool trip”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

I try to visit Nova Scotia and the Cabot trail at least once a year in the fall. This year I went the week before Thanksgiving and we had wonderful weather. It has been about 9 years since i went whale watching and as we had pretty decent weather we decided to try Wesley's Whale watching. While there are i believe 3 other companies that do whale watching, Wesley's was the only one that was open. Captain Mark's only had zodiak tours going. We had 3-6 foot swells going out to look for whales. There were about 12 people who came with us including a mother and infant. Needless to say what happened. The infant was fine, but the mother started to feel sick and was scared, so we had to turn back. We lost about 30 minutes doing that. However as it was near the end of the season, there were not too many people so we were able to go back out for the entire 2.5 hours that we were told it would take.

The use of sonar and radar is not used, so spotting whales becomes more of a guessing game. As we were the first boat out of the day, we could not rely on sightings from earlier in the day. I was the one who actually spotted the whales first. We got pretty close to them, and we saw about 8 or so of them. Got some decent photos, but as the sea was a little rough, it was hard to stabilize to take decent photos.

I would have liked to have stayed out longer, but I understand that these tours are time limited. the guide was well in formed and pleasant to talk to. We had a wonderful time.

I do not understand the other bad reviews on the site. It is understandable that if there are too few people for a tour that it may get cancelled or postponed. The cost of running the boat and fuel does not make it possible to simply bring out 1 or 2 people unless the tour operators know that the whales are close by. If visiting near the end of the season, I would call ahead to make sure that there are enough people for a tour.

All in all, if anyone is thinking of going whale watching, that they should go see Wesley.

“Two thumbs down!”

I have to qualify this sour grapes review as I realize these guys have a business to run. Advice for anyone looking to do a whale watching trip - call ahead first and check on qty of people booked and recent sightings. Operators typically want at least 6 customers before they go out.

There are 4 operators at this harbor. We wanted to go on the big boat instead of the zodiak so checked in with Wesley's at ~1:45 for 2:00 trip. Not enough people, so advised we would wait till 2:30 to see if others showed up. We left went for a nice hike nearby and returned.

Still not enough people. Advised that we would absolutely get out, but it might be on one of the other operators. Two more people showed up. Departure moved to 3. Advised we would absolutely go out on their boat but moved to 3:30. Two more people showed up - 6 now, thought we were golden.

Operators were scrambling around, couple radio and phone calls - we started sensing trouble. 3:45 advised they weren't going out but would give a discount to return in the morning. Now it was so late - the other operators were done and we didn't go out.

Really? 2-1/2 hours waiting around on empty promises. So frustrating because there were options.

Save yourself the frustration and go with the bigger operator - Captain Mark's.

“We were surrounded by whales!”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

We joined the tour because they offered 100% guarantee for seeing whales and they were not lying! After about 30min relaxing cruise out of Pleasant Bay, we found ourselves right in the centre of a large pod of pilot whales (we saw 20 something whales in total) and some of the whales swam right next to the boat! We also saw a few dolphins, a couple seals and even a white-head eagle! It was an amazing experience :)

“Whale watching in August”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

The trip started out cold and wet, but we had a cover and were provided with rain slickers or ponchos that kept us fairly dry. It was a long trip out but, as promised there were whales! We saw pods and pods of pilot whales, our guide Richard was quick to point out a seal that passed us, and he saw the whales long before I did. He was informative and friendly. Loved seeing the dorsal fins of the whales and Richard pointed out when they were feeding, which was the baby and many other little details that a commoner like myself wouldn't have known. The trip normally takes one and a half hours to two, but we were out for three. I think this is because we had to travel a bit further out to find our friends and were not disappointed. The trip back in was a little long and cold, but over all the adventure was a huge hit!
