“Nice stay at Masons arms”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2009

Stayed for one night in one of the cottage rooms behind the pub. Room quite nicely furnished although bathroom fittings on the cheap side. Food at pub good and better than could normally be expected given the lack of competition in the vicinity. Pleasant bar staff. More of a proper old pub rather than a gastropub/restaurant which no bad thing. Not much in Branscombe itself but pretty, unspoiled place. Quite good value.

We only stayed one night and booked on the off chance of a room. They had just one double left. The room was very small indeed, the bathroom was nearly as big as the bedroom!! The two of us could barely move and had to literally squeeze round the bed to get to the bathroom. The bathroom itself was very nice with a big shaped bath and shower, along with nice toiletries.

Everything in the room was nice and clean and had everything we could want. It had tea making facilities with biscuits. With the rooms being so small, they were very close together and at night we could hear doors shutting and even people using the toilet!

Breakfasts were excellent, with plenty of everything and a delicious full English. Service throughout our stay was exceptional. It could not be faulted. I would definitely stay there again, although in future, I would book early to ensure I didn't get the matchbox bedroom..

We stayed at The Masons Arms 15 years ago. We renewed our finest remembrance with a new stay in march april 2009 .
What a joy this was. The village of course was as beautiful and pictoresque as ever. And to walk there on the many foothpaths e.g. coastal path to Beer and for the more younger and experienced walkers to Seaton and Sidmouth was an experience.
We stayed in a cottage bedroom in the garden. The room was very cosy and tidy. The bathroom was excellent with fine shower and bath. There was a well provided tea and coffeetray included decafe and biscuits. Every day repleneshed. We ate three nights at the bar and the food was very good. One night for example 5 sorts of
grilled fresh fish for only 11.95. The housewine chardonnay or for e.g. merlot was very good.To conclude with the breakfast I can say just perfect. The staff, reception and waiters were very welcoming and friendly. All in all our stay was a wonderfull experience.

We had a three day midweek break at this hotel. The room itself was adequate, clean and tidy. The t.v. had only one channel working properly, channel 5. You could hear the tv and people from the room below quite clearly, also everytime the bathroom in the room next to us was used . We soon got the idea to arrive for all the meals first as there seemed to be only one person taking the orders, and the later you arrived, the longer you had to wait. The meals were good, but I agree with other posts that they were expensive.

The village of Branscombe was lovely, with a path leading down to the beach. We visited Sidmouth, Lyme Regis and Charmouth, which we really liked, but didn't stay long at Beer or Seaton. There were plenty of coastal paths to walk if you like walking.

We have just had the most wonderful break at The Masons Arms. Once you reach the heart of this pretty little village you come across the enchanting pub. The cottages are set in pretty gardens . Our room was beautiful with a four poster and spotlessly clean. We ate in the pub in the evenings and the food was excellent with the best home made chips I have tasted. All the locals were really friendly and welcoming. The staff were very attentive and gave us information on the area. The weather was beautiful so we took advantage of the lovely coastal walks. The Donkey Sanctuary at the top of the village is also well worth a visit. I can't wait to return to this little gem, although I shouldn't tell too many people or there may be no room left at the inn.!!!

The Masons Arms is in Branscombe, as others have said, which is a gorgeous village set in stunning scenery very close to the SouthWest Coast Path. It is accessed down some steep and very narrow lanes, and the whole ambience, at least in late winter/early spring, is relaxing and peaceful. The area is fantastic for walking, and there are even some local buses to help with one-way walks. We stayed for two nights in a 'cottage room', which turned out to be accessed through French windows and was the ground floor of the original cottage. This meant there were people upstairs, and the one of the negatives was that the soundproofing was not all that it could be: the stairs in particular were rather loud. The bathroom was very large and well enough equipped - big bath, decent shower cubicle. As with the room itself the decor was a little tired and some redecorating is due. We ate in the hotel both nights, and this was a slight disappointment. The food was perfectly decent pub food, but nothing more than that, which was less than expected from their claims and other comments here. In particular, the Table d'Hote dinner in the 'full service restaurant' (actually a few tables off the lower bar area) was no better than adequate. It was good to see effort made to use very local ingredients. Breakfast was similarly fine, but nothing very special. The bar itself was great, lots of good local real ales and friendly service and a good mix of visitors and locals. The Masons Arms is an an excellent base for a weekend or longer in this fantastic area: maybe the three star rating is a little harsh, but it is not cheap and some things could definately be improved.
