“We were expecting the worse but were pleasantly surprised.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2013 via mobile

Our expectations were set by a very poor greeting. Once our name was found we were told we were in the dining room and given a table number.

We had no idea where the dining room was, we were not asked if we wanted a drink first and no one offered to take our coats.

We eventually found our table, tried to get rid of our coats but they were not sure where to put them. The table was cosy to say the least. We were given menus but has to ask for a wine list. Someone then tried to take our food order before we had ordered a drink.

Service aside the food was acceptable and represented value for money. The staff were polite but needed guidance.

We would go back for good food at a reasonable price.

to stay here you must be able to climb stairs. it is based on a 14th century inn plus 3 cottages and is built into a hill. I've never seen so many steps and stairs. the first room was small, plainly furnished but had 3 steps up into the bathroom! we got another room for the second and third nights there. it was huge, very private and cheap(ish) because you could hear the kitchen extractor system (but this didn't worry us). the beds were both comfortable, the lighting a bit subdied if you wanted to read. the restaurant was big, but divided up so you were not in a large soace. the bar area was very atmospheric with a huge log fire. the food was delicious and the waiters were excellent, especially the Frenchman. when we asked for strong coffee for breakfast we got it and it was delicious. the breakfast menu had lots of variety (eggs Benedict anyone? or scrambled eggs and smoked salmon or haddock with a perfectly poach egg?) we would definitely go again.

Room Tip: be sure to book your table for the evening meal as soon as you can as it gets busy.

We stayed in one of the less expensive rooms in the row of converted cottages on the hillside above the pub. I was a little wary, given that some other rooms cost an awful lot more than we were paying, but in fact our room was a reasonable size, well equipped and comfortable. In the evening we had pleasant meal in the bar, and breakfast the following morning was absolutely delicious.

I'm not sure what some of the other guests - who were probably paying twice what we were - thought of a couple of slightly scruffy walkers from the South West Coast Path, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Found this olde worlde pub/hotel on the internet and wondered if it was going to be as good as it looked. We were not disappointed. We booked for 3 nights. Our first night was in room 5, a garden cottage room with french doors into the garden. We had to have a ground floor bedroom because we took our dog and they don't allow dogs in the 1st floor bedrooms. It was a lovely big room with a great bathroom. Plenty of wardrobe space. The only problem was the noise from the guests who were in the room directly above us. We could hear the squeeky floorboards when they walked around the room and we could even hear the chap talking. There was a flagpole directly across from our room which was rattling most of the night because of the wind. We asked at reception the next morning if we could change rooms. The hotel was full but the receptionist made an exception, and gave us an upstairs cottage room, which was totally different. Very peaceful, lovely views, and the wind had dropped so no rattling flagpole. The food was excellent in the hotel, both breakfast and the evening meal. We tried another pub in Beer one night but regretted this as the food wasn't up to the same quality. Although the hotel was a little pricey, both for accommodation and drinks, we would return as the standard was very high and the actual location is superb, like being in another world. Absolutely lovely to wake up to birds singing and the sheep baa-ing. The gardens are well kept, with seating and tables spaced about, ideal for reading your book in peace. The staff were very helpful and very polite. The locals actually spoke to us and so we didn't feel like outsiders. The journey into the village can be daunting with the narrow country lanes, but worthwhile. If I had to change anything I would get rid of the flagpole, afterall there was no flag on it! Shame we had to come back home.

Room Tip: I would recommend paying the extra and get a garden cottage room.

We arrived at 6 pm and was very lucky to get a table. Busy with locals and tourists like us. Food orders were being taken at 630 pm. The, we assume the overseer was kind enough to liaise with the kitchen staff re my gluten free diet. I am pleased to say there were plenty of options, they couldn't be more helpful. Sadly the time waiting for two simple starters and four Mains took forever. At least forty mins for the starters and then another forty for the Mains. The overseer appeared mortified and couldn't apologise enough. She did explain that the kitchen were struggling to keep up with orders as they all came in at once. That said it didn't effect the quality of the food. Prices were probably about right. Well worth a visit.

What a discovery! We booked one of the cheaper rooms, which was very clean, spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. Breakfast was delicious and dinner was of high quality -restaurant food, rather than pub food, but at very reasonable prices. Branscombe is a beautiful village and the Masons' Arms is walking distance from the beach. All in all, great value for money and considerably better than we were expecting. We will be back without any shadow of a doubt.

Booked one of the smaller cheaper rooms for 4 nights. The room although small had everything you would need. Complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water. Hairdryer and plenty of hangers and extra cover and pillows if needed. All the usual items that you would require in the bathroom. The only thing we were not too pleased about was the silly two tier bath and shower above in which you could easily slip. We could not understand why an extra large shower tray was not put in instead.
The staff were so polite and friendly and were always helpful The breakfast was plentiful and tasty.
We ate at the Masons every evening and thoroughly enjoyed. There was the set menu with lots of different dishes and there was a daily specials menu. We will certainly return.
