“Charming pub with restaurant and hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2012

Room was gorgeous, very spacious with a four poster bed and large sofa. Food in the restaurant was varied and absolutely delicious. Staff were very helpful. Very busy evenings with locals in the pub as well as hotel guests. Big log fires and very friendly atmosphere. Can't wait to go back!

We stayed here last weekend for one night and it really was lovely. It was the first weekend away from our very young children and i am glad we chose the masons. The welcome and goodbye was very warm. Our cottage room was private and set among beautiful gardens. We booked to eat in the bar and when we were having a drink after a long walk I asked if we could have another table as I wasn't happy with the one we had been allocated. The charming bar man with long black hair was very apologetic and said they were was fully booked but he'd see what he could do. We weren't disappointed. when we came back an hour later he had sorted us a fabulous table. The food was lovely and our waitress, I think she was polish, was very sweet. The locals were very raucous but that can only be a good thing. Breakfast v good. We'll be back.

I stayed here during a few nights away on business. Only stayed the one night but it was very pleasant indeed. The staff were very friendly, the food was great, and the room was very comfortable.

If you want out in the sticks, no light pollution, and peace and quiet then definitely look into the Mason's Arms.

We chose The Masons Arms because it was recommended by Alistair Sawday and had reasonable reviews on Trip Advisor.

We are glad we did. We were impressed by the happy atmosphere amongst the very helpful staff. We stayed in one of the cottages which was roomy with lovely views over the countryside. All the cottages were being renovated and updated. It was the end cottage so had a large patio outside.

The breakfasts were excellent ... some of the best fish we have ever tasted. We didn't try the full English so can't comment on that.

We stayed for 2 nights and would happily return for a longer stay.

Branscome is a delightful Devon village, within 10 mins walk of the sea and a lovely cafe (cream teas etc.).

Room Tip: If you stay with a dog you must stay in one of the cottages, a short walk to the pub.

Had a great break taking the dog with us. The location is perfect for long walks with great views. We were made very welcome, we stayed in one of the cottages which was clean and comfortable. If the weather was better you could sit outside on your own patio. The food was very good if you are taking your dog I would reserve a table. The only thing I would say is that at £140.00 a night for B&B this was a little high but we still did enjoy our stay and would go back.

This review is about eating at the "Masons Arms" - I have no experience of the accomodation.

We ate here twice as a group of four (ie eight meals) during a week in Devon.

It would be hard to find a more picturesque building. There are two main bar areas and a separate restaurant. We ate in the larger of the bar areas. There appears to be confusion (not least amoungst the staff!) about what food is available in the restaurant. Perhaps there is a much larger choice of food on the 'bar menu' than the restaurant - we witnessed a very upset couple (residents?) eventually cancel their restaurant reservation and move to the bar area.

The bar menu is reasonably extensive (with a few 'specials') and the food was excellent quality and well presented. The portions were good. The pan roasted salmon, wild mushroom and pea linguine, and homemade beefburger deserve particular mention.Service was good.

We'd be happy to return (although perhaps not to stay having read some of the other reviews).

PS re dogs. This is always an emotive issue (my view is that dogs should not be alowed where food is being served) but I was appalled at the behaviour of the dog owners in the smaller bar area at the time of our first visit. We witnessed a disabled lady negotiating her way, with considerable difficulty, around the three large dogs sprawled on the floor in the area between the bar and the fire. Not one of the owners made any effort to move their dogs! Had the lady fallen and injured herself I would have happily supported her in suing the dog and pub owners (the later for allowing such obstruction)!

Having found this pub last year for a lovely afternoons lunch and having read the reviews (at the time) we decided to book a night's accomadtion there with our two dogs. What a disapointment!!

When we booked the room, we asked if we could reserve a table in the bar, as we wanted to take our dogs with us - we were told that this was not possible and we would have to take pot luck at getting a table. On arrival we were told that the bar had most of it's tables reserved!! Over the next 24hrs, it became obvious on a couple of occasions that there is no commucication between the reception and bar.

We stayed in room 3, which is the smallest hotel room that I have ever stayed in and totally unsuitable as a dog room. The room was tastefully furnished and have an excellent, but small shower room. The pillows were like bricks, which led to a disturbed nights sleep and crushed ears!!

Due to the lack of communication, we were unable to secure a table in the bar and ended up eating our "poor quality" meal outside on a cold evening. My vision of a pleasureable stay spent in fine accomadation (at those prices) and a fun evening in the bar sampling good beer & food, turned into nothing short of a disaster, we shivered outside whilst we ate our food and then retired back to our room at 8:20pm, the room being so small, it left us with no option that to get into bed and go to sleep.

We managed to have breakfast in the bar in the morning (luckily missing the stinky fish smelling restaurant) and the breakfast staff were wonderful - breakfast was very good, although the poached eggs were a tad underdone.

Would we go back to stay in this hotel - never again!!, and the hotels comments to previous reviewers asking people to give them another chance misses the point that this is an expensive hotel that is simply not worth the money - why is anybody going to spend more money after bad giving them "another chance" - there are many other deserving hotels that are worth the money they charge without the risk.

I am very sorry that you feel so upset about your recent stay. We were not aware until after you checked in that you had two dogs with you, we retain 7 of our 21 rooms as dog friendly and if we had known at the time of check in we may have been able to offer you a larger room. On booking and checking in guests are offered table reservations. We only allow dogs in our bar area and not in our restaurant. In the bar we have five tables out of nine that can be reserved. I am sorry that you feel there was lack of communication regarding our booking system and can only apologise that we didn’t have any tables available. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to discuss this matter further.
