“Little gem”

What more can I say but an old fashioned stone floor pub that you can drive past and not see. But do this at you peril. The food is superb, restaurant quality and very well presented. The fires are always hot and very welcoming.

“Was expecting to be disappointed... but no.”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

Well, having written three glowing reviews and told so many people about this place, we returned this week after a small break. In the interim, we’d been enjoying the "Swan in the Rushes" pub at Loughborough (truly incredible value and top quality chef-prepared food – an amazing lunch, but too pub-by for an evening meal) and "La Torre" in Coalville (very good, very friendly - a more modern restaurant).

We had decided to try elsewhere since the lunchtime fixed-menu cost here for the two of us had shot up from around £25.00 including drinks to around £35.00: this, we felt, was simply too much for a village pub. We’d tried the cheaper lunch “snacks” but, good as they were, the portions were tiny; and to top it all, my favourite, the fillet steak, has gone up to £23.00. An excellent and plentiful lunch for two at The Swan in the Rushes can be had for under £20.00; and a large beautifully cooked fillet at La Torre is £18.00.

Anyway, we returned. This was partly because nowhere else we can find locally matches this place for its relaxed feel, and partly to try the Christmas menu as a joint birthday treat for my wife's sister and her husband. We'd read the recent poor reviews but couldn't believe it had gone downhill as some suggest; but we were worried. We needn’t have been. It has gone uphill if anything: the meal was truly excellent, as was the service in every way. The desserts were as Greg of Masterchef would say, “Woweee!” – even better than in the past.

Why do a few disagree? Well, some things haven't changed – it needs a bit of a makeover some might say, especially the outside roofed "smoking area" and the old loos. It is an old village pub, though, after all – and in that lies its charm (at least for most people, some recent visitors don’t agree). Food-wise, as tasty as it is, the sirloin steak can be gristly and the butcher needs telling; the veg portions are not overwhelming; the price for fixed-lunch is too much and the cheaper lunchtime “lite-bites” are too, well, “lite”. Yet the cooking remains as ever top notch; and it’s so-o-o relaxing.

“Was expecting more to be honest”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

We decided to try the Swan for a meal and to be honest, we were left a little underwhelmed. The evening started well and the guy behind the bar was very welcoming and we rather liked the rustic feel of the place. However, the food was not that great. The starter (scallops) was nice enough, but the portion sizes were tiny and the plates were definitely underdressed. The mains were ok but the roast potatoes were hard and unpalatable. It was also absolutely freezing in the place and didn't warm up the entire time we were there. It is rather overpriced for what is essentially pub food trying to be something it isn't. We had heard very good reports of the place, but maybe this was on the coat tails of the previous owners.

“New Owners”
Reviewed December 8, 2012

Best pub in Mountsorrel. Good food, warm welcome, they remember your drinks as you walk in. Log fires and nice bar snacks. The restaurant can be little invaded by the local drinkers if you sit in the top half. The door to the toilets is close by and means there is a constant flow of people walking past your dining table. This can be intrusive and cold in the winter. The food is good, and deserves more custom.
Recommend to all to eat (ask to be seated in the bottom half of the restaurant) or drink.

“Great food and a wonderful "real" pub.”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

Have been a regular at this pub for about 8 years and like others, was a little wary of the recent change of management. I am now convinced that the new owners are continuing to make the Swan an exceptional place to visit.
Real ale, excellent food, which is freshly cooked and reasonably priced, open fires, friendly locals and no television or gaming machines to spoil the great atmosphere.
Yes it is a little quirky but that just adds to the charm.
We invited friends to the theamed night on 16/11/12 and they all agreed that the meal and service was great.
It's also lovely to sit in the garden by the river, but not at this time of year!
A real gem of a pub.
