“Freshly Charming & romantic serenity”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

Charming, romantic, well-cared for hotel with top notch linens, clean fresh rooms...tub was great, design in our room was cozy yet spacious...we were in lapopie room and highly recommend it. I was hesitant given the picture of the purple metal railing but loved it. Is much more charming than the images show From the room you have a stunning view of the church and the village. From afar you can enjoy it once again and i recommend staying here and spending the day in the village. It is so charming to look at from this vantage point.
Ask the reception (who speak exceptional English and Spanish) for some bread and meander down to the wooly sheep and burro down past the vines, after the yummy breakfast.
This is the room in the cooler months as the loft holds the warmth well, but take the lower floor rooms in the hot months.
Perfect for a night or two. Given many European charming hotels can have a lack of detail for cleanliness or modern touches or go too far in the modern, this one has found the right blend. Bravo!

Room Tip: if hot weather, take a lower floor as are cooler, if cool, ask for upper rooms especially lapopie ro...

Very modern hotel located directly across from one of the most popular tourist towns in France, St. Cirq Lapopie. We booked a comfortable room on the ground floor for our one-night stay in August at 118 euros. We do not recall any construction nearby as noted in later reviews. We did not book a suite, as it was “too” modern for us. No bathroom privacy in these upscale rooms. But the lower cost rooms we had also have their issues. First, we could not turn on the shower or turn it off. We had to call the desk for each of these tasks, as did our friends next door. The shower was otherwise superb, and the staff who were run ragged by our lack of technical skill took it all very well. On leaving we heard them discussing replacing the knobs on the shower. That would sure help. Second, as others have noted, there is no seat on the toilet. Why? Third, while there was a gorgeous view from the bedroom across the vineyards to the town, one does more in a bedroom than look out. The curtain that was in place only covered one of the two door panels; not good for a ground floor room.

On the good side of modern was the working A/C and wi-fi. We had considered the Mercues, a Relais and Chateau hotel near Cahors with great history, as an alternative place to stay. But it was 95 degrees when we were in this part of France, and this alternative had no A/C or modern shower. So we were pleased with our choice. The 12 euro breakfast was excellent, apart from the annoyance of the pesky bees. The croissants were freshly made and probably the best I have ever had (and I have had plenty). All of the staff spoke English fluently and were exceptionally polite and helpful. While I feel it necessary to inform the reader about the three issues noted above, I must confess that notwithstanding I loved the place. To find such a comfortable accommodation with such gorgeous views for 118 euros is a good deal. If the three issues were addressed by management, this place would be outstanding.

I had a really great and relaxing time staying here for a few days, and the discount on the second night is a bonus, but I can see why people would only stay one night in that there isnt a huge amount to do in the area. In addition, you are quite a way from the town, but the hotel does offer a shuttle service - but only provided you are eating at one of their restaurants.

The surrounding area is lovely and there is a great walk along part of the Lot River which is really pretty.

The standard rooms are more than adequate, however I did find it a little warm so had to leave the door open as there are no windows.

Would recommend but perhaps go for one of the other rooms if they have windows.

My wife and I stayed 2 nights. We had a room on the first floor but without a direct view of St Cirq Lapopie. The room was smart but quite small. There is little place to put baggage. A personal safe is in the wardrobe. Comfortable large beds. The air-conditionning worked well and was needed. Bathroom very modern but deep stone washbowl with no plug is awkward for shaving. A trick is to put a mug (if you have one) upside down over the outlet while filling up - or take a collection of plugs with you. Nice open shower. No seat on the loo but this is no problem and easy to keep clean.
Can get wet walking from rooms to reception/breakfast area. Breakfast not cheap but lots of variety. You can even cook your own egg! Swimming pool has great views, is nice and warm but is fairly small. We swam in it alone but with 2 or 3 others in, it would be....well...cosy. Towels available at reception.
Convenient parking available (gets full quickly) opposite rooms. More parking a little distance away.
Currently large building work going on just behind the hotel but no workers there during our visit. I assume it could be noisy and dusty when they are at work.
A windy night had our shutters banging hard from 4am onwards. I should have closed them but you don't always think of these things in the middle of the night. Not sure but other rooms' shutters may have also been banging. They have metal catches to hold them against the wall but can still rattle in strong winds.
There is no hotel restaurant on site. We chose not to use the hotel courtesy minibus service to a connected restaurant due to other reviews. Instead, we parked in a large (you may have to pay 2 euro) car park at the bottom of the hill at St. Cirq Lapopie and took a lovely short walk the few hundred meters up the path to the center, past a quaint house with a spiders web designed gate. There is also a large car park at the top with a shorter walk in. Another tip, take a torch for the walk back as it gets very dark either on the path or if you walk down the road. There were several restaurants to choose from and we opted for Le Cantou for both evening meals.
The hotel staff were friendly, helpful and most seem to speak English.
This is a fantastic location and the hotel does have a commanding view of St Cirq Lapopie which is one of the prettiest hillside towns. However, it could be so much better with a few improvements.
I would still recommend it and might well stay there again but would take a plug next time and watch what happens on that building site behind!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of St Cirq Lapopie

We had high hopes. We arrived 5 pm to find a large earth mover and two huge lorries working right by the hotel parking. We were told it would stop 'any moment'. By 6.30 we had sampled the very small pool and were taking an 'apero' on the terrace before riding the hotel minibus to the village. I asked in French when the work would stop. I got a shrug. I ranted a little. The not very courteous receptionist eventually agreed to call the owner and ask him. It did stop in due course when I suggested their claim of tranquillity and eco rural bliss was not a reality. Maybe it was time for them to stop anyway.
The view of the village across the river is very fine. The bathroom was well equipped and finished with expensive granite and tiles - with a trendy loo with no seat and a deep marble basin with no plug. Impossible to shave and be eco. The wardrobe looked like IKEA flat pack with sharp edged washers on the knobs. The beds are firm, but large. The aircon works.
Next morning things improved. We'd bought some wine in the village museum shop under the hotel owned restaurant (M Eric Viven seems to own the whole place?) and they'd delivered it to the hotel. The breakfast was 12 euros but I only wanted a cup of tea, excellent choice of varieties but 3.90 a pop. The morning receptionist was much less sullen and presented us with 2 extra bottles of decent local wine to compensate for the disturbance from building works. A good attempt to put things right.
They appear to be building apartments and an indoor pool in a modern box design right by the hotel parking. Check if it's still ongoing before you book, or bring ear plugs and be ready to pay for a car wash afterwards.

Wonderful setting with St Cirq Lapopie just across the river Lot. The hotel has a mini bus service to the village every half hour. They take you in and pick you up. As parking is so limited it would make it a very long walk up to the village so the service was a very welcome surprise.

The rooms are well appointed. Beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms were well appointed. The only thing that I would criticise is the lack of seats on the toilets. It is obviously a "modern" feature but not very practical. It is not very hygienic and for those that wish to sit down it must be very cold in the winter!

Fantastically located new hotel. The rooms spill into the outside living space, in amogst the vines is the swimmming pool with that view, walk through the Parkland with that view, We were transported to the village in the hotel Merc and dined at Le Gourmet Quercynois where we had a great meal at a good price. The return was easy on the hour and half hour. Look at the total B&B price and it is competitive - they have just got the split a bit wrong. Well worth a visit.
