Nam Ou River Lodge
Reviewed February 26, 2013

We loved our 3 night stay at nam ou river lodge. We checked a few other hotels and for a little more, maybe $2 more you get this amazing view of the river and limestone cliff mountains with nothing blocking your view. I even went to the most expensive hotel to compare and I think this view is better and more private.
The rooms were basic but there was wood trim a a few other touches that made it nicer than most other budget hotels that we stayed in. The price was 100,000 kip in high season, which is a steal for the privacy ( there r 6 rooms only and away from town....but short walk) and view.
We talked to the owner, Mang, who was open to a few small suggestions to make this place even better. A list explaining things such as - the sheets are supplied if asked for, when they clean, breakfast is 3eggs ( which makes the price very good) and maybe an extra table or a few little shelves would really make this place perfect. Btw, wifi worked well in the reception but was spotty in the rooms.
We really loved this place and would recommend it to anyone in this price range.

Room Tip: Bottom floor rooms had sprayer for toilets , top floor does not. Top floor has slightly better view...

A good choice, especially if you don't mind the short walk to the main restaurant area. There is a bar at the guesthouse so no problem if you want a quiet drink on the balcony with great views of the river. The rooms are clean and comfortable. They are a bit sparsely furnished, but Mang is working on that. Also there was only a bottom sheet, not a top one, but another sheet was cheerfully provided when we asked. Mang told us about possible excursions but we didn't feel at all pressured: we enjoyed talking to him. He was helpful arranging a shared minivan for our onward travel. We booked the guesthouse by email well in advance. I think it would be advisable to confirm the booking a day or so before you arrive. We would happily stay there again.

This place is beautiful. The owner and his wife are very friendly and cheerful, and the wife makes a real kickin papaya salad. Rooms are nice and clean, a bit basic but that's all you really require in this part of the world. Wifi is available, which is good.

A great aspect is that the guesthouse is on the bank of the river, so the view is stunning. It's a great place to just chill out and is a 10 min walk away from the main part if the town (not at all a drawback).

Would definitely come back here again, cheap, clean, beautiful, great owners... What more does anyone else need?

We contacted the people from Nam Ou River Lodge to make a reservation. We also e-mailed them about the way to get from Luang Nam Tha to Nong Khiau. Given the fact that there is only one early option to get from Luang Nam Tha to Nong Khiau, we were surprised to find out upon arrival that our room was given away to someone else due to the fact that we 'arrived too late'. At 17 o'clock.

They told us they tried to call us, but obviously there was no mobile-phone reception between Luang Nam Tha and Nong Khiau.

So, even if you have a reservation and explained you travel plans, including your arrival time, it might mean your room will be given away if the busdriver drives a bit slow. Which occasionally happens in Laos.

Very disappointing.

Mang was our driver from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw and advised us during the trip to stay at his lodge.
We had a quick look around and decided to give it a go: it was less than 10 minutes walk from both the bus station and the bridge (the center), it was clean, charming, had indeed an amazing view and was just USD10 a night ex breakfast!

We stayed 3 nights in room 1, first room in the ground floor.
There are 6 rooms in total split over 2 floors: ground floor and first floor. 3 of them have double beds.
They all have hot water, which if you ask me, is a great deal especially if you've travelled Laos on budget.

There is a little 'bar' area with two hammocks adjacent to the lodge where Mang's wife serves breakfasts and where you can buy beer Lao, water, biscuits, etc.

Mang also runs a little tour agency, right after the bridge. We did two tours with him: the 100 waterfalls (a nice walk in the country side with 2 stops in local villages, and that also includes a boat trip) and the bamboo rafting where you actually participate to building your own bamboo raft and go down the Nam Ou River while enjoying a yummy BBQ (wish I could spice the meat the way they did, it was simply to die for).

The lodge is a friendly family owned place, where people come and go but take the time to share their experiences.

We really enjoyed our stay there and highly recommend it. We quite liked that it was a bit away from all other lodges and hotels, as it felt a bit more authentic: you have walk down a little ground path to reach it (bring your flash light, you'll need it at night!), right along the Nong Khiaw school, which gives you the 'everyday life' feeling.

Only downside maybe is that the walls are a bit thin, and the mattresses are on the hard side. But then again you fall asleep to the sound of the river...

There is no wifi but it's on Mang's to do list :)

Don't miss it!

Room Tip: I would go for the rooms on the first floor.

The Nam Ou River Lodge is truly a gem: WIth very big rooms, mosquito net and hot shower this place is great value for money in Nong Khiaw. And this is if you do not include the view on the Nam Ou river, which is breathtaking and the very friendly owner and his wife, who are always open for questions and can arrange just about anything you might want to do in the area.
There is "not much to do" in Nong Khiaw, apart from enjoying the scenery that is! This goes for the most of Lao though and the area of Nong Khiaw is very charming. You can enjoy boat rides to and past small villages, enjoy some good food, or a relaxing massage after a hard days work.
Even keeping up with the best soccer matches in Europe is not a problem, as mr. Mang is happy to share his tv and drinks with guests for the big matches...
Wi-fi is available and water is provided in a spotless clean room just outside the village in a quiet peaceful surrounding.

Nothing to complain really, but I would recommend that you bring a small light for getting to your room at night.

Wow, what a place. Rooms are beautiful the view is breathtaking right on the best spot on the Namou River. This is with no doubt the best place I've stayed in Asia. Missing this out is unaffordable. As my visa was running out I could only stay one night but I'll be back. See you again, Nam Ou River Lodge!!!!
