“Fabulous room with an amazing view”
Reviewed October 5, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here only one night and would have liked to stay longer. The room is beautiful, overlooking the river and the impressive cliffs. The staff were attentive, although a little relaxed at times, but that is the Lao way, I think! Yes - it is the pricy option in town, but It is worth it.

When people back home have asked me "what are you doing there", my answer has generally been "Nothing". The lodge is located on the riverside of a tributary to the Mekong River 130 km North of Luang Prabang. The 16 (?) cottages are large with a balcony. Not luxurious but very comfortable. A place where you can really feel at home. Management and staff are very friendly and are adding to the homely feel, when you come back for a second visit (or third as in my case). Only down-side is that Nong Kiau is a bit off the beaten track when you live in Europe. Yes, I will go back, when I get the opportunity to travel Laos Again. Almoist forgot to mention that rates are very reasonable compared to what you get.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally good. But some are a bit far from reception & restaurant

Although this is the best in town or rather village it is still extremely basic. It is located very conveniently and has great front river views BUT this also entails noise! Almost all boats operating on the river are with a motor so you will hear this all night. The rooms having no air con are very warm at night and apparently it is not safe to leave the doors open ... Be prepared to have lizards and other houseguests as the houses are built in original Lao tradition rendering a nice charm but also some other inconveniences.

The balcony overlooking the river is very nice, and the bed is very comfortable with a good mattress and a mosquito net. Everything is very clean as well and there is a mini bar with basics.

The food in the restaurant is extremely good for traditional Lao food a must try!

Room Tip: All rooms are the same

On reaching the increasingly crowded fracas that has become the village of Nong Khiaw, among the beaming yellow Beer Lao signs that line the road is one tastefully designed wooden sign which quietly points in the direction of an amazingly nice alternative to backpacker hell; Nong Khiaw Riverside. As the name suggests this is not a resort, hotel or guest house but a place you might like to call home for a few days on your trek through northern Lao.

The place is reached along a narrow dirt road and then a track down around the hillslope that leads down to the Ou River. One reaches the restaurant and reception building first. There is an open but covered deck where you can sit and take in the sights of boats plying up and down the river through red brown water. Directly opposite on the far banks of the river are towering karst peaks clothed in rainforest. There were more than a few birds darting about in the leafy foliage in the early morning.

The menu has a range of Lao, other Asian and some Western dishes. The food is good and not expensive compared with restaurants along the main road. A plate of Thai pad thai noodles or fried rice is 20,000kip ($2.50). The breakfast is not a full buffet during the low season but they offer all the items one would want and I ordered an omelette and bread and coffe which arrived within minutes.

The rooms are each separate buildings made of timber with bamboo inlays in the walls. Each room has a simple but nicely decorated bathroom, a large comfortable four-poster bed with lots of pillows and comfortable mattress and mosquito netting, a smallish desk in case you want to write or do some work, and a lovely expansive verandah with low lying deck chairs that you can sink into late in the afternoon to enjoy the cooling air after the sun goes down behind the mountains. There is wifi access from every room and it worked reasonably well.

It's charming property lined with trees and low bushes and it offers some quiet and solitude that you won't find at other guesthouses in the area. The manager was very pleasant and the Lao staff were very helpful. Definitely worth paying a few dollars extra to stay here.

Room Tip: Room no. 2 is closest to the restaurant and should be the most convenient and best choice but all ro...

We stayed here for one night and wished we had been able to stay much longer! The bungalow was amazing, really nicely finished and the bed and pillows were super comfortable! Everything very clean and well appointed and the balcony over the Nam Ou river is such a lovely place to sit and relax that it is tempting not to go anywhere at all! Staff were super friendly and helpful. There is a short walk from the bungalows to get to town but crossing the bridge on foot is also a magnificent experience. We will definitely be organising a trip back to Nong Kiau to stay here again and for longer!

We moved to the riverside after a night in a nearby guest house in the centre of the tourist area and the transition was well worth it. The bungalows look out over the river and across to the limestone cliffs, you can sit out on your private deck and enjoy the views and watch the boats go by. Its still close to the restaurants but far enough away to be private. Great breakfast included in the tariff.

We prefer wooden and simple - especially in a place like Nong Khiaw - so the Riverside fit the bill. The room was basic but comfortable, quiet and with a great view of the river. Breakfasts were good and the grounds, like the town in general, quite pleasant and relaxing.
