“Lovely setting, good service”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Had two nights here and enjoyed it after initially being disappointed with the accommodation. The bungalows are basic, but the bed is very comfortable, breakfast was good and the meal we had in the reataurant one evening was excellent. Bathroom needs renovating badly but it is not expensive and in prime spot in the village. Staff were very helpful.

We loved being at Nong Kiau Riverside. Our room was just great, with a lovely balcony from which we had a fantastic view on the river. The room was nicely decorated, the area is absolutely stunning. Definitely a place to recommend.

Overall, we were very happy with our stay at Nong Kiau riverside.
Pros : beautiful views, close to many other eating options, massage, etc., organize great tours
But.... the hotel is using a very bad exchange rate, atmosphere is cold at night (management is invisible, one night there were 2 waiters with limited English skills to serve 12 guests!), breakfast was really disappointing 2 mornings out of 3.
The only upscale option in the village though.

So everything that was written before is true, but I am sorry to have to write and report they just blasted and built a new road by the resort. If this was the West, the resort would be being paid because I can't see staying here now, my bungalow as 15 feet from the road and the trucks, car and bikes go up and down the road at night, early morning, etc. It's really really too bad and I do hope the hotel gets some compensation but I would say stay somewhere else at this point.

It must have been amazing before the road.

Dear jcb0540

Yes, we agree that the digging and chopping and banging that has been going on for a week or so has been a bit annoying. We don't expect any compensation, and I don't really think we need it. This road has actually been there for years, they are just fixing it up after a rainy season that took it's toll on it with small landslides and potholes. Now we are just waiting for a little rain so that the grass can grow up again and turn the mountainside as green and beautiful as it has always been. They've actually been so kind to lift the road some 80 cm up and moving it a meter further away from us. So we are all optimist.

We stayed here two nights and my views are as follows:

1) Location:
Nong Kiau is located in the outskirt of Laos - about 3 hours ride from Luang Prabang via Van. This chalet is located along the river of Nong Kiau with views of mountains and river. There are plenty of eateries, sundry shops, massage nearby (within 5 minutes walking distance) from the chalet. So, everything is very accessible from this chalet.

2) The Chalet:
Its very nature/back to basic kind of individual chalets located along the river with views of mountain. Basic amenities are provided in the chalet - such as a ceiling fan, water heather, mini fridge, kettle. The mattress and pillow are ok (mattress on the firm/hard side). During the day, the chalet can get a bit stuffy and warm - as the weather in Nong Kiau is not very cold/chilly during the day except during night time. Also, the lighting in the chalet are very dim, kind of unsuitable for reading during the night.

3) Breakfast:
Ok with the usual baguette, coffee/tea, juice, fruits. Could have been better for the price we paid for the room.

4) Transportation:
We made arrangements with the resort to pick us up from our resort in Luang Prabang. This seems to be the best way to Nong Kiau - as the minivan service provided was very good - new Hyundai van - very spacious, clean and comfortable for our group of 4. The road from Luang Prabang to Nong Kiau was also of acceptable condition - with some nice views along the way. Unless you are fond of taking the boat ride for 6-7 hrs to Nong Kiau from Luang Prabang - I highly recommend you to arrange transport pick up with the hotel itself. Worth the price paid.

5) Staff and Services
Owner Eskil was very welcoming and pleasant. The rest of the staffs are also very friendly. Overall, nice and good dealings/experience with the hotel staffs.

6) Wifi
Although only available in the lobby - the signals are strong and consistent.

Overall - definitely this is the most upscale property in Nong Kiau. Although was a little pricey - seems worth it when you compare this property with other lodging available in Nong Kiau.

Room Tip: All chalets are facing the river. Maybe the one further from the reception could be slightly better...

This is actually not a management response. I just can't find any other way to contact you. I want to let you know that picture no. 41 is inappropriate, it's a picture of our neighbor and competitor, not our place. That is less than third of ours in price and standard. Users viewing pictures will get the wrong impression that It is our bungalows. I've reported the picture as inappropriate several times, but it is still there.

The Nong Kiau Riverside hotel was all that we imagined it would be and then some! At first glimpse, we took in the amazing location right on the Mekong River and beautiful well manicured grounds. And then once we saw our room, we knew we'd be extending our stay! Lovely, spacious bungalow complete with a beautiful four poster bed (including a mosquito net), a riverside balcony with an enchanting view and a rustic decor that fits in with the surrounding countryside (I especially loved the small black and white photos). Lots of open air and quiet!

But, even with all of this, it's the staff that really makes this place special. All were very helpful and kind - particularly our servers at the resort restaurant (which has amazing food by the way), and our maid who kept the room absolutely spotless (after two months of traveling through SE Asia it was definitely the cleanest room I've ever stayed in). The Trek bikes onsite are in great shape too, and perfect for taking on the nearby mountain biking paths.

Previous reviews say that the hotel is too pricey. I agree that USD 40 is higher than any of the other nearby accommodations. However, if you took this exact hotel and placed it anywhere else in the world, it would easily be triple the price and higher. We found the rate to be well worth it!

We intended to stay at Nong Kiau 5 nights and finally stayed for 7 nights. It's doubtless the most beautiful place to stay (and to be!) upstream from Luang Prabang. The nature in the area is overwhelming and the Riverside Resort makes just the best out of it. All bungalows overlook the river, with a view on the lime stone mountains, you wake up in the morning with nature sound, the architecture of the bungalows is using local materials while having large openings to enjoy the terrace and view. The critics below were all removed by the time we were here (it seems the owner is reading comments & improving anything possible). For breakfast you choose from anything available on the breakfast menu, the pillows are the softest of all Asia, the beds are the most comfortable and clean of all our travel and stuff is very friendly. Concerning the comment on overpricing, we do not agree on that. There is a huge amount of arrivals - leavings which might be the reason for the 320.000 KIP per night (which is already o.k. concerning quality of the place and considering that breakfast is included). Once you stay more than 3 nights you can ask for a discount which makes the price even more reasonable. Two single recommendations for the friendly owner: The only thing missing in the breakfast is Muesli & Yoghurt (even though on some days the stuff organized it for us) and a shelf in the room. It's good to see a place existing already for quite some years and the owner & friendly manager still being so ambitious to keep and even improve the quality constantly. Please keep the spirit!

Room Tip: All rooms are perfect, but the most quiet ones might be those the most far from the restaurant, say...
