Hacienda Las Trancas
Reviewed July 10, 2009

The hacienda is beautiful. The rooms are spacious and the decor showcases the local art, crafts and culture. There's a variety of activities and services available such as horseback riding, hot-stone massage, heated pools and jacuzzi, ping-pong, mountain biking, etc. All of the rooms have the modern conveniences of flatscreen TVs, cable & dvd players. Wi-fi is available on the premises.

The traditional Mexican cuisine provided at mealtimes are a treat for the senses. Yolanda, the head chef, is a delight. As a matter of fact, all of the staff are warm, friendly and skilled. I would recommend it for weddings, reunions and other family and friends events.

I was originally scheduled to get married at the Hacienda in May 2009. Then the swine flu hit, and I had to postpone. The owner Kelley, her staff, and all the vendors were extremely accommodating in helping me reschedule the wedding that finally happened in July 2009 -- which says a lot about the place and the people who run it. So thirty adventurous New Yorkers trekked to the Central Mexico not knowing what to expect.

What we found was a beautiful historic hacienda operated by an incredibly warm staff. The all inclusive price included horseback riding in the unbelievable terrain, delicious meals, swimming at night in the candle lit pool, etc. It took me a little while to relax because I'm not used to such a quiet place coming from such a big city. If I could do it over again, I would have signed up immediately for the hot stone massage they offer at crazy affordable prices. After you finally have one, you just become so laid back.

If you are a foodie like I am, you'll really appreciate the freshness of the ingredients ... all grown on premises in the back garden filled with fig trees, lemon trees, rosemary, spinach, etc. I'm only used to the greasy, NYC version of Mexican food so I never knew it could be so light and nutritious. Yolanda's flour tortillas are like flaky, buttery pastries, not the soggy ones we get here. She really takes pride in what she does, and is happy to accommodate your taste buds.

Kelley, Ita, Rocio, and Kathleen were my wedding coordinators, and they aim to make your life as stress free as possible. They do not try to gouge you for money, and actually help you save and stay within budget. Gerardo, the main driver, is the sweetest, generous man I ever met. He is so helpful in pointing out sites and giving tours.

Many couldn't understand why I chose to have my wedding here instead of the beach area. Those who came finally do. They had the time of their lives. Yes the area is beautiful and dripping with culture and amazing colors -- but the people who make it happen truly seem to care and everyone becomes part of the hacienda family.

A note about the swine flu -- we did not feel like we were in any danger at all. Some of my guests dropped out because of it. There are a thousand more cases in NYC than there are currently in the entire state of Guanajuato. And don't let those stories of violence in Mexico scare you away. The media completely hypes it up. Mexico is a huge country, and this area is actually very safe and sleepy compared to where I'm from. Plus it's a great place to practice Spanish. They don't laugh at you if you get words wrong, and enjoy speaking to you.

I'd be happy to speak to any couples interested in getting married there.

We stayed at the Hacienda with a group of four families with kids and teens. The place is absolutely breathtaking. The decor is so authentic that each room feels like a museum. The views and the area were beautiful. Each morning we woke up to the sound of the burros and the crisp air. By afternoon it was warm enough to sit by the pool. The staff were fantastic. The meals were delicious and the owners were very helpful in any way that we needed. The gardens were absolutely beautiful. We did venture out a couple of times to San Miguel Des Allendes and once to Dolores Hidalgo. We enjoyed both but especially San Miguel. We enjoyed the pool, horseback riding daily in the country, the fitness center, and massages for 20 dollars an hour. It was hard to leave the hacienda at all because it is such a special place. It is definitely a one of a kind and we treasure all of our great memories there.

This was my first trip to Mexico. I have to say, at first I was a little leary because everyone I know who's gone to Mexico, go to the tourist traps along the shore. Well, now that I've been to Hacienda Las Trancas, I'll NEVER bother with the crowds along the shores. They're missing out on the true history and culture of a beautiful country.
Hacienda Las Trancas offers you all the modern amenities of a "modern" vacation such as a spa, gym, pool, etc but it is intergraded with the Mexican culture so that you leave with a more relaxed and enriched sense of having truly been enlightened.
Thanks Kelly, Stephen and staff!

We traveled with a group of friends to the Hacienda Las Trancas on March 9, 2009. Upon our arrival as we walked into the Hacienda, we were overcome by the splendor of the 450 year old residence. We were greeted by the Owner's Kelley and Stephen. Kelley told us the story of the history, and how they became the owner's of this magical place. Upon settling in, we were treated to Margaritas, and a wonderful treat of guacamole and fresh tortilla chips. We were then given a tour of the Hacienda, seeing all of it's beautiful rooms, and amenities. You cannot describe in a few words the beauty of this place. It definitely must be seen in person to absorb the tranquility, sights, the smells from the kitchen, and the overall peacefullness it provides.
The staff at the Hacienda out rates those of a five star hotel. They are at your service for anything you desire. Ita, and Gerardo the guest services personel are attentive to your needs and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Ita who speaks excellent english is a bright and bubbly addition to the Hacienda. Gerardo, who also is a driver to take you to anyplace you want, along with his staff, is a sweet gentle man, who gives you the history of the surrounding villages. Yolanda, the chef and her helplers provide you with the most incredible meals you will ever taste. She is accommodating to your every need. We would applaude her at every meal to show her our appreciation. The Horse Stable are attended to by Juan, who is a very wonderful young man, and will take you on a ride, that you will be talking about for years. The Spa was used by almost everyone, at least twice. The women who attend to you made every muscle relax, and gave you a feeling of pure peace.
We were so fortunate to have Kelley and Stephen at the Hacienda during our stay. The are two very special people who have taken a run down Hacienda and put their mind, spirit and body, to turn it into a place of magic.
We enjoyed a birthday celebration for one of our group, and had a Mariaci Band, and danced the night away. Yolanda provided a delicious Tres Leche cake, that melted in your mouth. The Suites were as elegant as you would find in a five star hotel, with flat screen TV's , wonderful bedding, terraces or patios, with beautiful views, and bathrooms that would befit a King.
I could go on and on, but you must experience this place for yourselves. You will come away, refreshed, and wanting to come back.

Thanks so much Kelley, Stephen, Ita, Gerardo, Kathleen, Yolanda, Juan and all the staff for making us feel at home, in your home!!!

We spent a glorious week at Hacienda Las Trancas -- ' we' consisting of 13 extended family members, ranging in age from 3 to 66.

The hacienda itself is simply glorious. It has been renovated with love and care, and the rooms are breathtaking and spacious, many with enormously high vaulted ceilings, enormous bathrooms (sometimes down a flight of stairs), several with separate sitting rooms, all of them nicely appointed and beautifully decorated. THe outdoor spaces are well-maintained, and lush. I simply can't describe how magical the setting is. Fabulous hammocks for relaxing; lots of nooks for sitting and reading; and yes, satellite TV; internet (both wired and wireless); and a very well-stocked collection of DVD's to meet all tastes. I was expecting 'rustic luxury' -- what I got was MUCH heavier on the 'luxury' than the 'rustic.' It's really a beautiful, beautiful, place.

THe kids (4 of them, cousins between the ages of 3 and 9) were in absolute heaven - -they could run around to their hearts' content. And, honestly, the grown-ups were in heaven too. (It would have been harder if the kids didn't have each other. But this was a fabulous place for exploring, for hide-and-seek, for playing board games together, etc. )

And the staff is just wonderful. Yolanda is not only a fabulous cook, but she is tremendously accommodating as well. Not only did she check in with us about the menu daily, and make alterations to suit our preferences, but she went ENORMOUSLY out of her way to accommodate the 4 children (one of whom wanted traditional mexican food, just not too spicy, and another of whom pretty much only wanted extremely familiar foods like pasta, rice, bananas, etc). SHe would meet all of our needs with a smile -- and oh, those chile rellenos, oh that salsa verde. . . and for Christmas, she made the most gorgeous turkey, with Mexican versions of all the trimmings, and a fabulously delicious fruit/chile salsa. We celebrated one child's birthday there too, complete with an absolutely marvelous mariachi band, and a traditional pinata filled with candy.

Ita and Gerardo met all of our needs; helped us arrange for transportation into town; found us a reservation or two; and were both warm and delightful. The rest of the staff was terrific too, and we enjoyed our numerous horseback rides tremendously. And the hot rock massages -- well, let's just say I could get used to having them frequently. . . and thank goodness for the small gym -- though we couldn't possibly work out enough to make up for the sensational food we consumed in substantial quantities! We were sorry not to meet the owners, who were in the US during our stay -- maybe next time!?

We took several day trips during our stay -- one to Guanajuato, one to San Miguel, and one to Dolores Hidalgo (by far the closest of the three, and well known for pottery). But what I would say is that you want to come to Las Trancas with people that you want to relax with, spend time with, etc. The day trips are all very nice, but apart from Dolores Hidalgo, the other towns are quite a schlep -- you wouldn't, I don't think , want to come to Las Trancas and then leave to visit these other places daily. A week at Las Trancas is best thought of as a kind of semi-retreat vacation -- the kind of place where you relax with friends, have a lovely afternoon of reminiscing over margaritas, and then, every other day or so, journey somewhere a bit further afield. But if that mixture of retreat and excursion is what you are seeking, I truly believe there could hardly be a better place on earth for it.

Are there any downsides? My only criticism of Las Trancas itself is that the pool / jacuzzi are only so-so. The jacuzzi was a little bit smelly, and the pool, which is solar heated, wasn't really quite warm enough at christmastime for the grown-ups to be eager to swim with the kids. Also, although all of the rooms are extremely nice, they are not all 'equal' -- some are significantly grander and more spacious than others. Just something, depending on the group size and make-up, of which people might want to be aware.

NIghts, too, were a little noisy. We had both the typical outside rural noises of Mexico -- anyone who has spent time in such places knows that roosters do not at all limit their crows to dawn. We also had the sounds of Christmas, and yes, there were some townspeople nearby enjoying themselves and their fireworks a little late into the night for our tastes. To my mind, that's simply part of being somewhere else, somewhere different -- but for those who are especially noise sensitive, earplugs might be a good idea.

I'm almost ambivalent about contributing to the significant host of superlative reviews here on tripadvisor. This place feels like a special secret, a precious place that one only wishes to share with close and deserving friends. If I can put together the right group of friends to enjoy it, I will certainly return in a heartbeat.

Our small business network held its annual meeting at the Hacienda, meeting for four days until three in the afternoon and then relaxing and exploring the countryside and nearby towns and cities the rest of the time together. We couldn't have chosen a better place to hold our meetings! The old Hacienda and its ten acres are spectacular, so grand and beautiful, rich in history, architectural appeal and comfort. Most of the suites are huge, several with large downstairs bathing and dressing rooms,. Ours was the especially grand "honeymoon" suite, and though we have been married over 30 years now, we appreciated this incredibly beautiful and luxurious bedroom suite with its high vaulted brick ceiling, comfy living room with gas fireplace, and beautiful long terrace with gorgeous mountain views. This hacienda is truly exceptional and was a dream come true for us. The cook, Yolanda, is an artist; she and her small kitchen staff made the most delicious meals for our group each day and received our spontaneous and enthusiastic applause. Our warm and thoughtful bilingual manager, Ita, was highly professional and competent, her English being exceptionally good. She cheerfully and without fail made certain all of our personal and business needs were quickly met. The wonderful and expert drivers were always helpful, patient and accommodating; Gerardo is bilingual, knows about local history, and graduated from the university in nearby Guanajuato. We were so impressed and moved by this wonderful staff, as much or even more so than the beautiful place. The owner, Kelley, was also always only a quick phone call away, being exceptionally helpful and concerned that everything go well. Her love and respect for this special place is evident. The landscape gardens are incredibly beautiful with many hammocks and seating areas in which to relax. There were bouquets of spectacular calla lilies decorating each suite and the common areas. The hot tub was delightful and pools refreshing. Many in our group enjoyed horseback riding up on the messa. We enjoyed long hikes followed by wonderful spa treatments. I can confirm that the hot stone massage was an exceptional treat! Yolanda and her staff made us fresh margaritas and delicious snacks every evening at sundown. The view of the orange sun setting over the blue mountain range is unforgettable. Dolores Hidalgo, San Miguel and Guanajuato are all recommended and worth exploring. The drivers will easily take you there in comfort and bring you home. We also recommend stopping at La Gruta hot springs on the way back from San Miguel or as a short trip by itself. In February every single day was sunny and warm, ideal weather, and such a balm to our northern winter-weary bodies and souls. Thank you, Kelley and staff , for a fantastic stay! We long to return with our friends and family..
