“So much more than we expected.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2009

The rental was very easy to arrange with the owner, Lorraine. The casa at La Ruina is perfect and is so much more than we expected. It is located near to everything. There is a laundry/dry cleaner nearby on Jesus and a well stocked convenience store just up the hill on Terraplen.
There are two apartments upstairs, which are also available for rent. Access to the apartments is securely separated from the casa by a small courtyard just off the main entry vestibule. The casa/house is very spacious and extremely comfortable. There is a second courtyard separating the main house from the bedrooms. I harvested the oranges daily to make delicious juice from the orange tree in this courtyard. This orange tree was also a lemon tree that was grafted at the main trunk. The tree bore both fruits.
As you enter the house, there is an office/single bedroom with a bathroom just off the living room. From the beautiful entry courtyard you enter a spacious living room and sitting area. And from there you enter the dining room. The dining room is connected to the kitchen. Everything you would need to serve 8 at the beautiful wooden table is available from the side-board in the dining room. The two bedrooms are very quiet as they are located well away from the street. Each bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom. The bedrooms are accessible through the second courtyard just off the dining room. There is wonderful artwork all over the entire house. In the courtyard connecting the bedrooms to the house is a stairway taking you to up an airy and well lit studio above the two bedrooms, which we assume the owners use when they are in town.
Maria is the housekeeper who comes daily to clean the house. She is wonderful.

LaRuina was our home away from home for 10 days during the 2007 Christmas Holidays with our 2 grown daughters and their husbands. An architectural gem, and only 3 blocks from El Jardin, Juarez Park, 2 neighborhood grocers, many shops and restaurants, it was the perfect spot to launch our varied activities. Marty and Lorraine, the owners (and artists) were wonderful hosts, and their flair for art and color add to the special feeling of "did we luck out on this, or what."

We recently returned from a 10-day stay at La Ruina in SMA and it was a glorious way to spend the holidays. We were lucky to have both the main house and Apartment #1 and would recommend both whole-heartedly (though would probably opt for Apartment #2 if we came back only because it gets better daylight). There is so much to do in SMA, but we found ourselves wanting to sit back and enjoy the beautiful home, enjoying margaritas and sunsets from the rooftop palapa, snoozing in the sun on one of the many patios, cooking dinners in the well-stocked kitchen, sharing meals at the beautiful dining table. We did peel ourselves away and see all the SMA has to offer, but be sure that you plan a long enough stay that you can both explore and lay low in this perfect little spot. The owners, Marty and Lorraine, are gracious, kind, and very helpful. They have fabulous taste in art (and are amazing artists themselves) and they have decorated the space with interesting, fun, beautiful pieces. The location can't be beat, minutes from the jardin, the markets, the park. We just loved La Ruina and hope that will have the good fortune to make it back some time in the future.

A first time vacation with another couple was successful in large part because of the many positives in our 8 day stay at La Ruina vacation home 3 blks. from Jardin. With some physical challanges of our friend, we were all able to enjoy the Independence Day weekend due to the ease and convenience of our SM home. We could attend festivities, and easily check back with our friend at the house on days he needed to rest. La Ruina is a beautifully renovated home, and two separate apts. located on Terraplen.
It is within easy stroll on slightly-inclined streets to four of the best resturants;and a convenient alternate route to the Jardin when Jesus was crowded with celebration. Half way to the Jardin is the El Buen cafe, so breakfast or lunch is just minutes away, a cafe one returns to often. I highly recommend La Ruina, a place I will rent again for a third time. Easy website to locate all the details and pics. [--]

We have stayed at La Ruina every year for 4 years. The location can't be beat- 2 blocks from the Jardin, the pulse of San Miguel. The apartment is decorated and furnished tastefully in true Mexican style and color. Everything you need is in the apartment and anything you want is within walking distance. The roof palapa view at sunset is breathtaking! The apartments are weekly rentals and quite reasonable. La Ruina is a hidden gem in the center of colonial San Miguel!!

My wife and I have enjoyed staying at La Ruina for the past seven years (and hopefully for many more). It has been a great place to enjoy San Miguel Allende. and I recommend it.

The La Ruina property, located in the historic district, consists of 2 one bedroom rental apartments, a tiny studio and a large suite of rooms. The large suite is occupied intermittently by the American owners and is available to rent when the owners are not there. The apartments are clean, comfortable and well decorated. The property is close to all the restaurants, concerts, movies, fireworks, etc that make SMA a great place. Rental includes daily maid service.

A nice roof terrace withr a shaded palapa amid beautiful plantings and a marvelous view is available to renters. We usually ate lunch there and read and snoozed in the afternoon..

Further information on the property is available on the web site: laruina[--].
