Casa Calderoni Bed and Breakfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 6, 2008

Casa Calderoni is a lovely B&B centrally located in downtown San Miguel. It is within walking distance of the central plaza, restaurants, theatres, and numerous art galleries. There is an artisan market nearby with lots of local shopping and you are surrounded with the hustle and bustle of city life. The villa, turned B&B, opens into an elegantly tiled central courtyard, surrounded with bougainvillea vines. Straight ahead is the media/library room with internet service. Upstairs is the guest livingroom and dining room furnished with mexican furniture and original "Calderoni" art. On the roof is a delightful sundeck, with a view of the city and its wondrous architecture and church spirals. The views are spectacular at sunrise or sunset and it is a great place to meet and visit with your fellow travellers. The guest rooms are small, quaintly furnished and of course have the standard "rock hard" mexican mattresses. The bedding however meets first class hotel standards. The bathrooms also are small but adequate with tiled separate shower stalls. Each room is artfully painted to match one of the french masters and ours was the "Matisse" room. Breakfast is held in the diningroom and the menu is varied with fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, bacon and eggs done to your choosing or french toast; a great start to the day. For those wishing to sample the street food, there are wonderful vendors on every corner with mouthwatering scents as you pass by day or night. The B&B is quiet however the rooms are not soundproof and you can "gently" hear your neighbours. There is 24 hour security.

Of special note at this B&B is their on-site day manager Luis Villanueva who is fluent in English and has a wealth of information on what to do in San Miguel. He is able to competently assist with travel arrangements, reservations, and any problems a tourist might encounter.

We hope to return to this beautiful spot.

This is a lovely, stylish small boutique hotel, in a perfect location, just a minute from the Mercado de Artesania and three blocks from thje central plaza. Staff could not be more helpful, and the owners are charming and friendly too. My only quibble is the price, which is a little steep for San Miguel compared to most places, but it is worth it.
No hestitation in recommending Casa Calderoni highly.

We loved the place. We went with our daughter who shared the Henri Matisse suite with us. Roomy, good service, great staff, location three blocks from the main square. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

I just spent 6 days at Casa Calderoni with a friend. Our room was not huge (how can they be in old colonial Mexican cities?) but charming with a beautiful set of large windows with flowers that open out onto the courtyard. The beds were VERY firm but both of us agreed that we slept amazing well and that they were surprisingly comfortable. They even made my friend think that perhaps she should get rid of her Temperpedic in place of one like these! The only thing that could be nicer were the throw rugs on the floor.
The service there was very friendly and would do anything to make your stay more amenable. Breakfast was typically american (eggs and toast or pancakes/french toast and bacon to your liking) plus a serve yourself platter of fresh fruit, local yogurt and granola. The only complaint that I heard from others was that the coffee didn't stay hot for very long despite the thermoses. Mary Calderoni visited at breakfast almost daily and was great conversation and advice. At the front desk, Luis was always warm and welcoming, full of information and good directions. Not to be missed is hearing his band play at a local restaurant most nights! We've dubbed him the next John Tesh or Andreas Bocelli! Edudardo is the night person on call, but was so kind as to walk us to a nearby restaurant and was willing to act as a tour guide to nearby Guanajuato. We thought the price a bit steep $120 for the day but in retrospect we should have taken him! We wandered around Guanajuato, got lost and really didn't get to experience this charming town.
One VERY nice perk is the free internet service and free calls to the US from the phone in the common area!
It was a wonderful stay, and a place where it was easy to make friends with other travellers.

On my third trip to SMA, we chose Casa Calderoni. I've stayed in more expensive and less expensive, but truly this is the best value so far. It was even more elegant and comfortable than the *more expensive*. This will definitely be our *go to* place on future trips.

We stayed in the Frieda Kahlo room which has been accurately described elsewhere. I'll just add that I really appreciated the abundance of storage space in the drawers and armoire and night tables as well as the comfy sofa and coffee table and satellite tv. A floor lamp plus bedside lamps gave plenty of light. And space heaters plus floor fans were a blessed bonus. The room is exquisitely decorated w/ high quality bed linens. The bathroom is meticulously clean - the shower unremarkable, but very roomy and great water pressure.

There are so many little touches that Ben and Merry have thoughtfully provided-even a nightlight in the bathroom. Soap and toiletries in the bath. A 24 hour attendant who was actually present and attentive! The common areas are also lavishly furnished and decorated. The lower level tv room had free internet, free phone, bathroom, and a space heater - important in January. The mid-level sitting room had a CD player w/ classical music, comfy couch, and an inviting fireplace.

Ben and Merry's warm and welcoming personalities, Merry's artworks, as well as her decorative touches all combine to make the place feel just right. Luis, the on-site manager, is a gem - enthusiastic to help in any way possible and very professional. Be sure to catch his nightly music group at a local restaurant.

Breakfast is very good - if you have any special requests, be sure to speak up. On our visit, one guest was bemoaning that she couldn't drink the coffee b/c she could only drink decaf. Ben was right on it and had a pot of decaf for her the next day. If you have an early departure, they will have a mini-breakfast available for you. I especially liked that their breakfast time extended until 1030. We used their recommended drivers and were very satisfied.

My room was spacious, the mattress was especially appreciated (an item of interest only to people with back problems)..The breakfast was ample with all the choices one could hope for...guests dined at a big communal table where we were able to get to know each other....Further - free international telephone, internet access, American cable news. And the staff is warm and accommodating...Really, an ideal place...

I shall return!
