“Absolutely the best bakery in San Miguel”

Panaderia La Buena Vida
Restaurant details
Reviewed March 6, 2019

La Buena Vida has for years offered healthy and delicious bread and pastries for a fraction of the cost of some of the newer artisan-style bakeries--they are just as good, but don't market themselves that way. Some of their best features: whole grain and polenta-based crackers, wonderful scones and a great version of pan de semita.

Always delicious baked goods. Especially good are their orange glazed donuts. Careful, they can be addictive!

Decades serving San Miguel, one can still get great breads, doughnuts, and cinnamon rolls. Always fresh and almost always really good.

These guys make some great orange glazed donuts. It's sort of an infused extract of orange with a proper level of sweetness to it. It's not like anything else you may have tasted with the traditional "burn your teeth sweet" icing you may be familiar with from other bakeries. Worth trying. The vanilla's are great too. I bought some today and the lady next to me said the chocolate was like no other, so that's pretty great as well.

In years past the doughnuts sold out by a certain time in the morning and it always appeared to me as if the bakery kept production back to a certain tolerable level in order to keep up interest and demand. I notice there's been a price increase recently which means you can actually find them at one of their distribution points a lot later in the day now, and also leave with a few less pesos of cambio in your pocket. I'm now down from buying 6 to 4, so higher prices don't always produce the desired results. (While my waistline does remain appreciative.)

Otherwise just about everything they make has some sort of unique twist (pun) to it and if they would only serve a light colored and flavorful centeno (rye bread) with seeds, I might be there every morning at the counter.

Love their crackers for serving appetizers on and the staff is very friendly and use to tourists. Easy bop in place from the jardin across from Belle Artes.
