Our trip to SMA would not have been nearly as enjoyable if we hadn't selected to stay at Casa de la Cuesta. We arrived late at night on a Friday, and as we have experienced in the past at various B&B's, expected a key to be left for us with, at most, a note of welcoming. What we got was far from it.
Heidi greeted us at the door upon our late arrival and gave us a tour of their amazing property. The welcome glass of wine was very much appreciated as well after a long travel day, as well. After the tour, we settled into our room where a wood-burning fire place awaited us. My mother was ecstatic.
After getting our rest, we awoke and joined the rest of the guests for breakfast. This is where we met Bill. Bill greeted us with a warm hello, and showed us to our seats for breakfast. We are not prone to hyperbole, so when we say these were some of the best breakfast meals we've ever had, you can believe it. You can expect a variation on traditional Mexican Breakfast everyday. That's if you're still hungry after eating the yogurt, fresh fruit, and granola that starts your meal. All of which were delicious.
After breakfast each day, we set out on foot to explore San Miguel. Bill & Heidi gave us great recommendations throughout our stay for places we must see and great restaurants to dine at. In a short trip, good recommendations are key to being an efficient tourist :).
One of the best highlights of our trip, was when Bill took time after breakfast one day to give us a tour of his Mask Museum, La Otra Cara. His passion for his "hobby" of collecting masks from indigenous tribes throughout Mexico was infectious, and made the tour very interesting to us. His collection is impressive, and he gives you the opportunity to purchase masks outside of the museum.
Heidi also took time to show us her Folk Art collection. She supports local artists that support their families through their art work. We purchased a few pieces for our home!
All in all, I couldn't imagine a better experience than staying at Casa de la Cuesta. Highly highly recommended for anyone traveling to San Miguel.
