Bill's a great host. Will answer all your questions and has put together something quite unique. But, he does not suffer fools.

“Definitely worthy of a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014

We went on a wet, cold day in SMA and had a great time! Bill is very knowledgeable and gives an interesting talk before going into the museum (his collection). He is respectful of people's time and starts promptly. The masks are fascinating! Heidi gives an excellent talk in the folk art shop that includes folk art from various parts of Mexico. The kids were riveted! We found some beautiful items to bring home, as well.

“Very interesting”

You need an appointment to visit this collection which is not as large as the one in Zacatecas but is very well done. The owner of the collection is quite helpful although he does not allow photos in the museum.

“A Labor of Love that Should Not Be Missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2013

The Mask Museum, formally known as La Otra Cara de Mexico (The Other Face of Mexico), is excellent! This private museum is open by appointment only, showcasing over 500 ceremonial masks, collected over the course of 20 years, that represent the various indigenous cultures of Mexico. There is no admission charge, but each adult visitor is asked to contribute 100 pesos that will be used toward the opening of a new children’s day care center in San Miguel. Photos are not allowed in the museum, but this photo was taken in the upstairs folk art gallery, where we purchased a beautiful piece of art. The owners and curators, Bill & Heidi LeVasseur, are also the innkeepers of Casa de la Cuesta, the top-rated B&B in which their museum is located. They are extremely hospitable, and served delicious coffee while Bill gave his introductory presentation, describing himself as an “amateur ethnographer”. A visit to this museum should not be missed!

“BY RESERVATION ONLY”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2013

This is not open to the public and has no hours or sign on the door. It is a B&
B. Call and make a reservation before going there. It is out of the way and a good walk from the Jardine.

So sorry that this visitor was not aware that the Mask Museum is open to the public by appointment only. In the eight years of operation, we have never been a “retail” museum with regular nine-to-five business hours. All advertising that we place in the local newspaper and with the San Miguel Tourism Department clearly says “By Appointment Only” and lists our telephone number and email address. The sign on the door (yes, there is a sign on the door) also says “By Appointment Only”. We think that we are doing everything that we can to help visitors avoid this inconvenience.
We find it amusing that the three bad reviews that we have received are from folks who have never seen the museum.
