“Chic, elegant, quiet”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

This boutique hotel is close to everything, yet far enough away for guests to enjoy tranquility! A wonderful staff, beautiful rooms, elegant spa, and a pool with infinity edge which overflows down the wall of the restaurant! A truly remarkable design. Even if you aren't staying there, you can enjoy all the amenities with a day pass! Not to be missed for a quiet, intimate bar setting!

Room Tip: Be happy to be there! It's all beautiful!

Beautiful boutique hotel, lovely large room, great location, pricey. Very attentive staff, friendly, excellent service. Food was great, loved the fresh juice combinations - healthy & tasty, I had @ breakfast.
Careful not to leave anything on the floor, when it rains, window/door leaked inside in our room.

My wife and I checked in for an extended week-end at this state-of-the-art boutique hotel recently. We definitely loved the great atmosphere, impecable service, quiet areas to relax and enjoy your time, and in particular the large, comfortable room, with all the amenities. The Spa was a particular bonus! We both took great massages (at reasonable prices). Breakfast is served at your table by the swimming pool, with a full and delicious menu. We only had lunch once, but that was enough to appreciate the quality of the cooking. Matilda is located on a quiet street within the historical center of San Miguel, just a few blocs away from the main plaza. Strongly recommended!

Room Tip: We didn't have one of the best rooms --late reservations-- in the lower floor, overlooking a clo...

The wonderfull guest relations staff at the Rosewood Hotel in S Miguel de Allende recommended we tried the Moxi restaurant at Hotel Matilda, which, she claimed, was one of the best in Mexico. Our expectations were, thus, very high and we made this dinner the most sigbificant of our trip.
The restaurant was very pretty and very comfortable. The lighting was perfect.
The food was hit and miss, unfortunately. Whilst some dishes were very well executed and impeccably presented, others were simply disappointing. A shame, considering that the restaurant has Chef Enrique Olvera as its mentor.
The worse thing however was the service. Waiters were simply incompetent. Atention was not there, follow ups were terrible, timmings of service were totally off and thrre was absolutely no interest form anyone other than the hostess who, in passing happened to provide service details that were no part of herjob description.
Over all it could have been a much better experience
A thank you and good bye may have saved the night but nobody made the effort.

We want to thank you for visiting Moxi at Hotel Matilda on your recent visit. While we’re pleased that you enjoyed the stylish ambience and design, we’re sorry that your evening was less than perfect. In fact, Moxi has received rave reviews for cuisine and service since it opened, so your experience was quite unusual. However, we value the input of every important guest and will review your remarks with our staff to be sure that any necessary changes are made immediately. We appreciate your comments, and hope you’ll visit us again.

With best regards,

The Matilda is very proud of its designer-chic appearance, but for us the room experience was not great. We were given room C8, right on the patio so that whenever we opened our door there were people literally on our doorstep, sitting in chairs, drinking, chatting, playing with children and dogs - so that we never felt any privacy. The staff were not helpful and just said the hotel was full. On our first morning we were woken at 06.00am by machine gun fire in the street right outside the front gate, repeated bursts of four or five shots. After a while, we realized the 'gunfire' was in fact fireworks, which started at 6.00am and continued throughout the day until after 7.00pm. The staff said this is normal every weekend because locals use fireworks to stop rain from affecting weddings....yeh, right. All day long on Sunday too we had pyro 'salutes' every few minutes - and it still rained. There are a lot of weddings, so if you come to San Miguel Allende, you might want to stay in a quieter part of town. The bedroom is designer chic but not functional. The lights are controlled by a little remote the size of a credit card which is easily misplaced or covered by a book, so that you'll go crazy trying to find a light switch that actually affects the lighting. (Spoiler: the bedside light switch is hidden behind the bedhead and you have to stand on the bed to reach it.) The bedside tables have no drawers and there's already a phone and a radio on them so there's little room for your own stuff. The closet has a curtain, not a door and there is little space to hang any clothes because the folding suitcase racks are stored in the closet - there's no space in the room for suitcases without tripping over them on the way to the front door or the bathroom. There are no drawers in the closet, simply trendy boxes to store stuff and the bar fridge is under the room safe - which gets very warm and humid from the fridge exhaust so don't store anything electronic in the safe. There are no mirrors at all in the bedroom. If you want to look at a full-length mirror, you have to enter the bathroom and close the door (because the mirror is on the back of it). We kept the curtains closed to avoid exposing ourselves to the people outside our room, so it was dark most of the time. I'm sure there are better rooms, there would have to be, but we paid full price for ours and it wasn't worth it. The restaurant is highly-reviewed - we ate there a couple of times and it was good but not outstanding. The hotel is designed to make money from clients - be aware that every time you sign a bill, you are offered the chance to give a tip. Then when you check out you discover the hotel has added 10% of the total bill as a "service charge" - this is not a tax but simply an add-on for the hotel. We were less than impressed by the Matilda, despite its aesthetic charms and have decided to stay elsewhere on our next visit because San Miguel Allende has many villas for rent that offer a much better experience.

Room Tip: get as far away as possible from the pool and restaurant area, and away from the street where the fi...

At Matilda, we pride ourselves on providing not only a well-designed hotel, but also one that is comfortable and functionable. In fact, Travel + Leisure just named Hotel Matilda the best-designed boutique hotel in Mexico – an award we worked hard to deserve. That said, we also know our contemporary hotel is not for everyone. We sincerely regret that your room didn’t meet your expectations, and will be sure to share your remarks with our staff.

First, let me share our impressions of Hotel Matilda. We arrived on February 9th, after a long delayed flight experience... As our Van (from Leon Airport to San Miguel), pulled up to the hotel, we felt as though we were in a dream.. A wide open welcoming entrance into another world....Beautiful subdued lighting, artwork, welcoming drinks...A world away from the previous few hours... We were shown our room. As we approached, in front of us was this Sunset, only described in books. Our room was stunning. Sinks, showers..ultra modern.. bed extremely comfortable.. in- room safe and mini bar, and even air conditioning and heat that you can control from a remote while you are lying down... The Dining area (both inside and outside) beautiful... along with the infinity pool...spa... and on and on...The Bar is also something to behold. There is nothing wrong with this Hotel...... Now for the most important part... There are no words, written or spoken, that can adequately express how grateful we are to their Extraordinary Staff.

Halfway through our trip, my Wife fell in a park... After managing to get back to the Hotel, by Taxi, and evaluating the situation,we realized that the bruise was much worse than we expected. We asked the Manager to call an ambulance to take us to Tech 100 Hospital in San Miguel. In a minute, she was in our room coordinating everything. The ambulance soon arrived. While at the Hospital...GUSTAVO appeared, and offered to stay with us as long as we felt we needed him.. Unbelievable!! My wife ended up spending the night in the Hospital, with what turned out to be a broken knee cap. We elected not to have Surgery, She wore a leg brace the remainder of the trip...We ended up needing to change all our reservations home in order to accommodate the leg brace and not being able to bend her leg.THe staff was amazing.OCTAVIO and DEBORAH worked tirelessly to secure all the changes in our plans. ENRIQUE, a wonderful, thoughtful, kind man, even offered to bring some crutches from his home, that his wife had used.. to help my wife. We refused, but how nice was that! Even the Bartender, ALEJANDRO was Special and kind to us. I , unfortunately, do not have the names of everyone that was kind and helpful...but believe me...it extended from the Waiter's in the Restaurant to the Housekeeping Staff.. This Hotel is Special..not because the food was great.. or the rooms were made up on time...or the beds were comfortable ( all those things are true), but because of the People on their Staff. They turned what could have been a horrible ending... into a magical trip... Please stay at the Hotel Matilda if you can... You will not regret it !!

We just spend an amazing vacation in San Miguel de Allende and the Hotel Matilda was absouletly perfect! It was so pristine clean that the moment you walked in, you relaxed! We were a group of 58 on a rewards trip from our company. We filled this beautiful hotel that appeared brand new although it could not have been. The whole staff was so amazing with welcoming smiles and friendly hearts the entire trip. They never seemed to be overwhelmed by this big group of Americans who were all trying to go places at the same time, or converged on the kitchen and wait staff for food and drinks. The chef was superior, providing gorgeous top-shelf cuisine and his staff never seemed tired of the demands of a large group. I'm sure it's not normal to have all your guests on the same schedule! Breakfast was always a treat to start the day - no buffet like food - try the eggs benedict, mexican style YUM! Every room in the hotel was so beautifully appointed and the linens in the guest rooms and restaurant were the finest I've experienced. The beds were unbelieveably comfortable and a topic of conversation at breakfast many times. I had no exprectations for this in Mexico! The location to the Jardín Principal [center square] is only a few short blocks - we did it many times. There are many restuarants right nearby, lots of little local shops to pop in and out of and the hotel can hook you up for any kind of excursion you could possibly hope for. I must drop a few names of some stand out staff but trust me they all wanted nothing more than to please you and make you feel your happiness was truly important! Our entire group thanks Magdalena, the event coordinator who seems to be the one with her pulse on everything; Deborah and Octoavio who were ALWAYS at the front desk to handle all the little things that we constantly needed; Ulises and the whole valet team who were ALWAYS at the door to great you and get whatever was needed. We need last minute group taxis, postcard stamps, change for our large denomination pesos, drinks when the bar wasn't open.... on and on... these folks said NO to nothing!!! More than once, I saw the General Manager working hard along side his staff -these folks give a new meaning to team work. I could go on and on with praise but it's important to note I have absoulely nothing negative to say about anything this lovely boutique hotel provided for us!!! Start your trip off right by booking here - I PROMISE you will not be sorry!

ALSO - For outstanding service in transportation to and from the airports or what we feel is the top notch tour guide organization you should email or call Angelica. Their vehicles are very nice and clean. Her English is wonderful and she has such a passion for the histroy of the whole region. We loved her sense of humor and the personal stories she told that helped us relate to what she was teaching us [she also knew where all the clean restrooms were!]. You can email her or call at:
