Owner description: El Charco del Ingenio is a botanical garden and nature preserve just a few minutes from the historical city of San Miguel de Allende. The name comes from a spring-fed pool nestled in an impressive canyon. With great biodiversity, many different species of native plants and animals are in the canyon, the wetlands and the dry scrubland. El Charco hosts an extensive botanical collection made up of cacti and other succulent Mexican plants, many of which are rare, threatened or in danger of extinction. This is a place that was sanctified as a Peace Zone by the Dalai Lama, where you can enjoy the Conservatory of Mexican Plants, scenic overlooks, historic sites, trails, Interactive Garden for Children, camping zone, cafeteria & gift shop, as well as different activities like guided tours, sweat-lodge, workshops, concerts, full moon ceremonies and more.

Have to take a cab out unless you are fit for hill walking. Cab cost about $3.00 to go anywhere in San Miguel..

High above San Miguel, with good maps and information for a self-guided tour, El Charco offers a good place to walk, some splendid views and an introduction to the flora of the high desert. Guided tours are available on certain days. After a good wet season, the lake had water fowl. Particularly interesting were the installations that related the site to traditional culture. Take a cab up; you have the option of a walk back or they will call a cab for you from reception. The organization runs on a shoe-string with much volunteer effort, so you can help them out by purchasing souvenirs in the shop.

Guided by Audubon Society members who know the place well, we got to see the vermillion flycatcher and the Mexican duck as well as the white face ibis. It is well-worth the visit.

Many cacti that would have been lost under dams, for example in Queretaro, at the ZIMAPAN DAM, some of them 800 years old, have been recuparated and saved and are now here in San Miguel de Allende. The fauna is returning to this park. Great accomplishment to protect land that would have been urbanized.

El Charcoal is a peaceful, quiet, and beautiful garden full of cactus and succulents. The staff are very helpful and friendly. It was an easy, downhill walk back to San Miguel de Allende.
