Owner description: El Charco del Ingenio is a botanical garden and nature preserve just a few minutes from the historical city of San Miguel de Allende. The name comes from a spring-fed pool nestled in an impressive canyon. With great biodiversity, many different species of native plants and animals are in the canyon, the wetlands and the dry scrubland. El Charco hosts an extensive botanical collection made up of cacti and other succulent Mexican plants, many of which are rare, threatened or in danger of extinction. This is a place that was sanctified as a Peace Zone by the Dalai Lama, where you can enjoy the Conservatory of Mexican Plants, scenic overlooks, historic sites, trails, Interactive Garden for Children, camping zone, cafeteria & gift shop, as well as different activities like guided tours, sweat-lodge, workshops, concerts, full moon ceremonies and more.

“Best Cactus Collection I Have Ever Seen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2012

If you love cacti, this is a great spot to go. You can walk all around the grounds and see many different type of cacti. If you are a photographer, you will truly enjoy this opportunity.

I walked from downtown, but, you might prefer to take a cab for about 30 pesos each way, and a walk from downtown will take app 45 minutes.

Expect to spend about 1-2 hours here observing the peaceful settings. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the intense Mexican sun.

All in all, a great little walk into nature in SMA and recommended. App 30 MXN entry fee.

“Incredible”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2012

Located high above San Miguel de Allende. It might be best to take a taxi up, but it is also a great walk for those who want to work-off the food you've been enjoying in town. Be sure to take your camera for the views of the city below as well as the amazing botanical cactus gardens.

“What I like best...”

about the Botanical Gardens are the amazing variety of cacti and the walking/hiking trails with some lovely views of town. It's a pleasant way to spend a morning or afternoon, quiet, serene, and surrounded by bird song.
