Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada
Certificate of Excellence

This is one of the Orient-Express properties and, as one might expect, the setting and the service are excellent. It’s well situated in “el centro” and a short walk to all of the most interesting historic sights, great restaurants and interesting galleries.

The architecture is traditional colonial, but the rooms are spacious, light-filled and include all the modern day amenities (e.g., wifi). The public spaces are almost as enjoyable as the private spaces, and most rooms seem to have outdoor terraces or better. Meaning, it really is a wonderful home away from home. A great base camp for enjoying all that San Miguel has to offer, and an oasis from just about everything.

Garden house several blocks from the center, sorrounded by public parks, no security at all. Small room, tiny bathroom sink inside the room), curtains not wide enough to cover the window, spots on the walls, mess of cable under the night table, the pressing board at your sight. Not a Conde de Nast 5 stars standard. Be carefull, this house was not mentioned in their website.

Case de Sierra Nevada is an exquisite boutique hotel set in a cluster of beautifully restored haciendas. We stayed in Casa Limon (Hospicio #44), in suite #441. The bedroom has a large period bed, and the bathroom has Talavera tiles and a brass bathtub/double sink. Really pretty. The whole aesthetic experience, in fact, is lovely!

The other part of the experience is a truly sincere staff that cares immensely about making the stay happy and comfortable. The concierge, Ricardo, worked with me before we arrived, and was extremely helpful in planning all the details: booking guides, restaurants, etc. The chambermaid was so warm and kind, genuinely interested in making our stay as nice as possible.

In terms of what we did, here're some suggestions:

- The mask museum was great; you need a reservation, ask Ricardo to make it for you. The couple who runs it - Bill and Heidi - are very knowledgable.

- Walk around a lot, and pack sturdy shoes that allow you to handle steep cobblestone streets.

- A Nopales salad at the El Rincon de Don Tomas in the Jardin was great.

- Ceviches at La Prada (Peruvian) were great, but they don't take credit cards, and that annoyed us greatly.

- Sunset from the terrace of the Rosewood was nice, but it was cold.

- In November, the days started being cool, warmed up in the afternoon, and got quite cold at night. Pack according to the weather expectations.

- The mole at the patio in Mama Mia with live music was great the night we arrived.

- Moxi was a good restaurant, but not the ambience we were looking for.

- Fabrica la Aurora is an experience - beautiful space - but the Art is not sufficiently interesting.

- Prices at boutiques seem to be quite out of whack.

- The new Tao gallery has good stuff, right around the corner from the hotel.

- Ricardo arranged a guide to take us on a walking tour. I recommend hiring a guide for 2-3 hours one morning. You see a lot, and hear lots of charming stories.

- We also took a guide to visit Guanajuato and Dolores Hidalgo. Nice day-trip, not a must. San Miguel is the real jewel.

We take all our out of town guests here . We live about 90 mins away. This hotel expands through the small cobbled street with rooms tucked away where you least expect them. I have stayed in other top hotels in SMA but the Sierra Nevada just has a charm that the other ones do have . The staff are always very helpful and usually show us a few rooms so we can pick one that is right for us. On this visit it was a cooler evening and they set up a fire for us in our room. Very romantic . This hotel is also very close to the square for the evening wander. Lots of restaurants . The french bakery which isa a must . Also my favourite - the market . Wander through streets of crafts , foods , silver etc

Room Tip: You will have to decide - each room is very different , some with views , some near the pool , some...

We had always heard about SMA. So we finally decided to make the journey. One of the best travel decisions we have made and to be fortunate enough to stay at this hotel was just a huge bonus. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. Gustavo (aka Our Butler ) made us feel as though we were at home. The best margaritas in SMA are prepared by Jose Luis Estrada in the cozy bar. His own creation of a Tamarind margarita should be featured in a travel brochure promoting this property. Jose and all of the folks in the restaurant did a great job. Somehow they know just the right amount of attention to devote to each guest without being overly attentive. Our room was perfect with a great view of the churches in the plaza. The location is great and you can walk anywhere in town. The walking tour and the cooking school are must do items. This trip to this charming Mexican town was well worth it and to stay at the Casa de Sierra Nevada Hotel only enhanced the experience. Great Place! Great Visit! Great Hotel! Muchas Gracias para todo la Hospitalidad! Mike and Cindy D.

Room Tip: If you are going to just SMA fly into Leon/Guanajuato airport. (from USA)

This hotel is definitely NOT inexpensive- especially when you consider some of the inconveniences we experienced (such as our room being given away the first night and having to play musical rooms, and the room we ended up in for about $450-$500 per night was WITHOUT HOT WATER IN THE SHOWER!) So why would I give this place five stars? THE PEOPLE! THE BEAUTY! THE LOCATION! AND... DID I SAY THE PEOPLE? In particular, a beautiful man who calls himself "the butler" but who's real name is Gustavo was the quintessence of our time there- he was kind, generous, went above and beyond the call of duty to meet our needs without ever being invasive- and even gifted everyone in our group with tokens of Mexico that were specific to our own interests and personalities on our last day. In three short nights he had taken the time and care to really get to know each one of us and give us a personalized momento! You can tell that this hotel is his home, and as guests we were made to feel like family not customers. The rooms are spectacularly beautiful- and some of them like our second space (L'Atelier, or Casa Principal 355) have spectacular views of the city- the short walk to the city center is sublime- the surrounding shops and neighborhood are a real delight. This place is a MUST to visit- just make sure you ask for Gustavo! And I definitely recommend the walking tour too- exquisite!

Room Tip: Casa Principal #355 or L'Atelier has its own deck overlooking the Cathedral and gorgeous trees...

The service was great and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Our room was spacious and the way the bathroom was separated gave privacy. We loved having a courtyard with a fountain. It extends the room and with the great weather you can probably use it year round. I wish it had been just a bit cooler so we could have used our romantic fireplace. The Nespresso coffee machine is a nice touch and well stocked.
