Hotel del Portal San Miguel
Reviewed November 21, 2012

Last time I was in San Miguel de Allende I stayed at Hotel del Portal and it was a great experience. The service was perfect, the have really comfortable rooms and beds. But the location is one of the best things about the hotel, it is in the heart of San Miguel. The front rooms are a bit noisy when the chapel bell rings, but have a really nice view.

Room Tip: Front rooms have the best view and the back room are the less noisy.

Location is excelent, but room and hotel facilities weren't very good.

Just in front of the principal park, which is very very good.

Wish it had air conditioner, that is something I missed.

The room was clean but the whole building felt tight in space. It was somehow strange to me who am used to regular hotels... with lobby, A/C, spacious room, etc.

Service from staff was just ok.

My husband and I took a trip to San Miguel de Allende and though this Hotel will be a nice place to stay. The first (and last) night at the Hotel was awful. The rooms lack of ventilation, and the one we stayed in had this strong sewage smell; and there was no way to get ride of it since there was no windows or other sources to ventilate the room. Next morning we decided to ask for a different room, but the insisted we should stay in the same room (and they said they will charge us more if we were about to be moved), and that they will fix the sewage smell issue by blocking the bathroom drain!! We said no, and decided to move out of the Hotel.
At that point, the Hotel personal said that they already charged our credit card for all the nights we were going to stay!! According to their "logic", there was no way for them to credit our card again. So, if we were decided to leave, we should give them another card number (National, because they did not want to deal with the International one), and they will reimburse us in five business days. After 20 days, we are still waiting and we had to spend money in international phone calls to get our money back (hoping they will act in a Honest way).
This people from the Hotel do not have any right to charge in full to a client to his arrival (they should always leave an open voucher) , and the tale that they could not credit right away is fullish.
The room was smelly, lack of ventilation, there were nails coming out of the floor, and it was not that clean at all. It is a shame that they advertise it as a nice Hotel. Do not believe the pictures they post in Internet. It is not worth your money.

Room Tip: Pick another Hotel, avoid this one!!

This was our 1st visit to San Miguel and friends booked us into this hotel. It has a small doorway with steep stairs up to the 2nd floor lobby. We were given large room next to the reception which had a small shared balcony overlooking the town square. The cathedral is only about 200' away. This is OK during the day but they start ringing the bells early so it's not a good place to stay unless you are an early bird. The rates do not include any meals but there is an adjacent restaurant on the ground floor which had a good breakfast, expresso and people watching. There is no AC so we left the balcony doors open for air and it rained while we were out for dinner with quite a bit of water getting on the floor. There is no parking but they provide off-site parking at another hotel about 3 blocks away. They also don't have WiFi but there is a Starbucks right across the street lin a historic building with an inside courtyard. The positive of this hotel is it's central location. Some might consider this place quaint while others would definitely feel it's oddly laid out for a hotel. I presume this is because it was converted from a home. This place definitely can't be rated anything but 3 stars. I got up early the 3 days we stayed here and walked around nearby taking photos before the streets got busy. The plus of staying here being next to the town square for people watching if you like this kind of activity.

Please be advised that all hotel rooms have now AC and we have a sound proof system in our windows so noise will not be a problem anymore!

The hotel management is working very hard to satisfy our client needs!

First, the upsides: It's a stylish hotel in a great location, right on the Plaza Principal. The interior decoration is beautiful and inviting, and the staff is friendly.
On the other hand: I booked this hotel room as the one luxurious indulgence of an otherwise quite thrifty trip in Mexico. I was shocked, then, to discover that for $150 a night, I got a room with NO WINDOWS and stained sheets. It was June, so the room was quite warm but did not have any way of bringing fresh air except to open the door that faced the hallway and front atrium (which was also fairly stuffy because it had no source of fresh air itself). My partner and I actually woke up in the middle of the night, practically asphyxiated from the stuffy hot air. Not the fabulous night's sleep I was hoping to treat myself to.
Overall, unpleasant experiences are not unknown to me in my travels, but I was very disappointed that I had to pay as much as I did for this one.

I went with my boyfriend for the "fiestas de muertos" in November last year. We firstly reserved, AND PAID, through Expedia a room in Los Agaves hotel - under the same hotel chain in town. When we arrived to Los Agaves, we were told they did not have any reservation under our name and that all rooms were occupied for the whole weekend. Well... the room was not only reserved, but paid for the whole stay, so we asked the front desk girl to call the manager and ask for a solution. The manager, of course, never showed up. After a long time arguing with the front desk and the manager (by the phone), we were offered with a lower category room - too dark, no ventilation - which was not even close to the one we had paid and seen through the website, so we, of course, didn't accept it. Finally, we were asked to go downtown to the Hotel del Portal, where a better room was ready for us.
We arrived to Hotel del Portal very late at night (after a long trip by car and more than an hour arguing at Los Agaves). The new room they offered was right next to the front desk, so it was very noisy and the lamps didn't work either. We didn't accept this room again and asked the girl at the front desk to show us all the available rooms so we could choose the best one. At the end, we chose one at the end of the property and hoped it would be it for the rest of the night.
Next, we were hungry and wanted to go out for some food. After leaving the room, we tryed to close the door, but the lock didn't work. When we asked the front desk girl to fix the lock, she just answered telling us "oohh, don't worry, no one will go inside your room".
After all this, we were VERY upset and wanted to complain with Expedia directly. We asked the same girl for the phone (it was a long distance call, which we were not doing on our own cell phones) and we were finally allowed to use the phone. However, at the middle of the call with an Expedia representative, the girl just "accidentally" hung up the phone and didn't let us finish the call with the service rep.
It was too late to look for another hotel and, because of the season, there were not many rooms available in town. The rest of the days at the hotel were not very nice at all: the room had no enough ventilation and the shower had no door, so the whole thing was wet and hot each time we took a shower; the toilet was smelly too, the room was very noisy and we spent most of the time praying for no one to enter our room as the lock never worked correctly.
At the end of our stay, we wanted to see the manager and complain with her about all the bad service and facilities we got. Of course, she NEVER showed up and we left the hotel without even a apology for the bad service received.
